Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    What defines beautiful border plants?

Beautiful border plants are essential for creating stunning garden edges. These plants, like Phlox and Delphinium, are known for their vibrant colours and elegant shapes. They add visual appeal and structure to any garden. Often referred to as decorative flowering borders, these plants are chosen for their ability to create a striking display. Synonyms like decorative border bloomers highlight their ornamental value. In the garden, beautiful border plants serve multiple purposes. They act as focal points, drawing attention with their colourful blooms. Varieties such as Lupinus and Echinacea are popular for their flower-rich displays. These plants are perfect for creating visually appealing border perennials that enhance the overall look of the garden. Additionally, they can be combined with hedge plants to create a layered effect. Whether used for stunning flowers for borders or as the prettiest plants for garden borders, these plants are a must-have for any garden enthusiast.

Traits of visually striking edge fillers

Beautiful border plants are essential for creating stunning garden edges. These ornamental garden borders grow in various forms, often spreading to fill spaces with lush foliage. They can range from compact to expansive, depending on the species and cultivar. The development of these attractive garden edge plants begins in early spring, with shoots emerging as temperatures rise. By summer, they reach their full size, showcasing their vibrant blooms. The blooming period for beautiful border plants varies, often occurring from late spring to early autumn. Factors like climate, weather conditions, and soil preparation play a crucial role. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil encourage more prolific flowering. The age of the plant and proper care also influence the blooming cycle. The colours of these stunning flowers for borders are diverse, ranging from soft pastels to vivid hues. The specific shade depends on the type and cultivar, as well as soil quality and light exposure. Regular maintenance ensures the most vibrant display. While not all beautiful garden border plants are known for their fragrance, some varieties offer a pleasant scent. This can enhance the sensory experience in the garden, attracting pollinators and adding to biodiversity. The intensity of the fragrance can vary based on the plant's age and health. Mature beautiful border plants can reach different heights, from low-growing varieties to taller perennials. Choosing the right height is important for maintaining sightlines and layering in the garden. Proper placement and care ensure these plants become elegant border focal points, adding ornamental value to any garden.

Beautiful border plants are a wonderful addition to any garden. Their leaves come in various shapes, colours, and textures. Some have smooth, glossy leaves, while others have a more textured or hairy surface. The colour can range from deep green to variegated patterns. These plants may lose their leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate. In milder climates, some may remain evergreen, providing year-round interest.

The winter hardiness of beautiful border plants varies. Factors like temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure play a role. Some plants are more frost-tolerant, while others need protection. Well-drained soil can help prevent frost damage. In terms of being evergreen, many beautiful garden border plants shed their leaves annually, but some, depending on the species and location, stay green throughout the year.

Heat and drought resistance are important for beautiful blooms for front gardens. Origin, leaf structure, and root depth influence their ability to withstand dry conditions. Plants with a waxy coating or hairy leaves often retain moisture better. Deep roots help access water during dry spells. Ensuring adequate soil moisture and protection from strong winds can enhance their resilience.

Regarding toxicity, most beautiful border plants are safe for gardens with children and pets. However, it's always wise to research specific plants. In terms of biodiversity, these plants can support local ecosystems by providing food and shelter for insects and birds. They can mimic natural habitats, promoting a balanced ecosystem and enhancing garden resistance to pests.

Beautiful border plants can transform any garden into a stunning visual display. These plants are perfect for creating ornamental garden borders and attractive garden edge plants. Here are some ways to use them in the garden:

    • Place them in pots or planters for beautiful blooms in front gardens.
    • Use them as a windscreen or privacy screen with ornamental value.

Pairing ornamental borders with seasonal colour

Beautiful border plants can transform a garden into a stunning display. Combining these plants with other types can create a visually appealing and colourful garden. Consider pairing beautiful border plants with elegant border plants like Salvia or visually appealing border perennials such as Echinacea. These combinations offer a mix of textures and colours, enhancing the garden's beauty. For example, mixing beautiful border plants with colourful perennials like Coreopsis or flower-rich border varieties such as Rudbeckia can create a vibrant display. These combinations are not only visually striking but also attract pollinators, adding life to the garden. The combination of beautiful border plants with decorative border bloomers like Gaura or border focal points such as Agapanthus provides a dynamic and elegant look. These plants offer ornamental value and ensure the garden remains attractive throughout the seasons. By choosing the prettiest plants for garden borders, the garden becomes a place of beautiful blooms for front gardens, offering a delightful view for all who visit.

Ideal site and soil for standout border design

Beautiful border plants thrive best in full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth and flowering. Too much shade can limit their bloom, while too much sun can dry them out. Wind can be a concern for these plants, as strong gusts may damage delicate flowers. Planting them near a fence or hedge can provide some protection from the wind. The ideal soil for beautiful border plants is well-draining and rich in nutrients. Adding compost or organic matter can improve soil quality. Regular fertilisation helps maintain their vibrant appearance. Soil moisture is crucial; it should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. These plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Testing the soil pH can ensure it meets their needs. Adjusting the pH with lime or sulphur can create the perfect environment for growth. With the right conditions, beautiful border plants can become elegant border plants, adding ornamental value and serving as stunning flowers for borders.

    Planting guide for beautiful borders

Beautiful border plants can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For plants with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The distance between beautiful border plants depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Information on the number of plants per metre is available on the Heijnen product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for beautiful border plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. When planting, water the plants thoroughly and continue to water regularly, especially during dry spells. This helps the roots establish well. Beautiful border plants, such as decorative flowering borders and stunning flowers for borders, add elegance and visual appeal to any garden. Choose colourful perennials and flower-rich border varieties to create a visually appealing display. These decorative border bloomers serve as border focal points and offer ornamental value to the garden.

Maintenance Tips for Beautiful Garden Border Plants

Beautiful border plants add charm to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly. Early morning is ideal for watering to prevent evaporation. Pruning keeps beautiful border plants healthy and encourages growth. Trim in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Use sharp, clean tools to avoid damage. Pruning helps maintain shape and removes dead or diseased parts. Fertilising is crucial for vibrant blooms. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and mid-summer. Follow package instructions for quantity. Fertilising supports growth and enhances flowering. Dividing plants every few years prevents overcrowding. Best done in early spring or autumn. Gently separate roots and replant. This process rejuvenates plants and promotes healthy growth. Winter protection is vital for some varieties. Mulch around the base to insulate roots. In colder areas, cover with fleece to shield from frost. Transplanting is best in early spring or autumn. Water well before and after moving. Ensure the new location has similar conditions for successful establishment.

    • Water regularly, especially in dry periods.
    • Prune in late winter or early spring.
    • Fertilise in early spring and mid-summer.
    • Divide every few years to prevent overcrowding.
    • Provide winter protection if needed.
