Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application

Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

    What Defines Evergreen Climbers?

Evergreen climbers are plants that keep their leaves throughout the year, providing constant greenery in the garden. These non-deciduous climbing plants are perfect for adding vertical interest and can cover walls, fences, or trellises. Popular types include Hedera, Trachelospermum, and Lonicera. These all-season climbing greenery options are ideal for creating privacy, as they maintain their foliage even in winter. Evergreen climbers are also known as all-year-round green climbers or leaf-retaining climbing plants. They are often chosen for their ability to provide year-round coverage and beauty. Some people refer to them as climbers with persistent foliage or year-round green climbing plants. In the garden, evergreen climbers are used to create privacy screens, cover unsightly structures, or add a lush backdrop to other plants. They are especially useful as evergreen plants for fences or climbing plants with year-round leaves. Whether you need evergreen climbers for privacy or winter green climbing plants, these versatile plants can enhance any garden space.

Key features of non-deciduous climbing species

Evergreen climbers, also known as year-round green climbing plants or winter-hardy vertical plants, are a popular choice for gardens. These plants grow by attaching themselves to structures like walls or fences, spreading out to cover large areas. They can reach impressive heights, often growing several metres tall, while maintaining a dense spread. The development of evergreen climbers begins in early spring when new shoots emerge. As the season progresses, these shoots grow rapidly, reaching maturity by late summer. The plants continue to develop throughout the year, maintaining their foliage even in winter. Evergreen climbers typically bloom in late spring to early summer. The exact timing can vary based on climate, weather conditions, and the plant's age. Warmer temperatures and well-prepared soil can encourage earlier blooming. The flowers of evergreen climbers come in various colours, depending on the species and cultivar. Soil quality, light exposure, and care can influence the vibrancy of the blooms. Some common colours include white, pink, and yellow. While not all evergreen climbers are known for their scent, some species do produce fragrant flowers. The intensity of the fragrance can depend on factors like the plant's age and the time of day. These scents can attract pollinators, enhancing garden biodiversity. Mature evergreen climbers can reach heights of 3 to 10 metres, depending on the species and growing conditions. They are ideal for creating privacy screens or adding vertical interest to a garden. Proper care and placement can ensure healthy growth and a lush appearance all year round.

Evergreen climbers, also known as non-deciduous climbing plants, are a popular choice for gardens. Their leaves come in various shapes, from oval to lanceolate, and can be glossy or matte. The colour ranges from deep green to variegated patterns. These plants retain their leaves throughout the year, providing consistent greenery. Factors like species and climate influence leaf retention, with some climbers being more resilient in colder temperatures.

Winter hardiness is crucial for evergreen climbing plants. They can withstand mild frost, but extreme cold can be challenging. The choice of species, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a role in their survival. Planting in sheltered spots can help protect them from harsh winds.

These climbers are known for their ability to stay green all year round. Unlike deciduous plants, they do not shed leaves annually. The choice of species and the local climate affect their evergreen nature. They thrive in various locations, from sunny to partially shaded areas.

Evergreen climbers are generally heat and drought-tolerant. Their origin and leaf structure, such as a waxy coating, help them conserve water. A deep root system allows them to access moisture from the soil, making them suitable for dry conditions.

Regarding safety, evergreen climbers are non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no risk, making them a family-friendly option.

These plants contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for wildlife. Their long-lasting foliage supports ecosystems, offering nesting sites and protection for various species. Evergreen climbers enhance garden resilience against pests and diseases, promoting a balanced environment.

Where to use evergreen climbers in structure and cover

Evergreen climbers are perfect for adding year-round greenery to any garden. These year-round green climbing plants are versatile and can be used in various ways to enhance outdoor spaces. Here are some applications for evergreen climbers:

    • Use evergreen climbers as a border to define garden areas and add structure.
    • Plant them in groups for a lush, green wall effect, ideal for privacy.
    • Grow them as a solitary feature to create a focal point in the garden.
    • Train evergreen climbers on fences or walls for a natural, green cover.
    • Use them on pergolas to provide shade and a beautiful overhead canopy.
    • Plant in pots or containers for flexibility and easy movement around the garden.
    • Utilise them as a windscreen to protect delicate plants from harsh winds.
    • Create an insect-friendly zone by using evergreen climbers to attract beneficial insects.

These winter-hardy vertical plants are not only practical but also add beauty and interest to gardens throughout the year. Consider evergreen climbers for privacy or to maintain a consistent green backdrop in any season.

    Companion ideas for seasonal contrast

Evergreen climbers are a great choice for adding year-round interest to a garden. These non-deciduous climbing plants can be beautifully combined with various plant types to create stunning visual effects. Pairing evergreen climbers with deciduous shrubs like dogwood or witch hazel can provide a striking contrast, as the climbers maintain their foliage while the shrubs change with the seasons. Another interesting combination is with perennial grasses, which add texture and movement alongside the steady greenery of the climbers.

For a more vibrant display, consider mixing evergreen climbers with flowering perennials such as clematis or honeysuckle. These combinations not only offer a mix of colours but also attract pollinators, enhancing the garden's biodiversity. The persistent foliage of evergreen climbers provides a lush backdrop that highlights the blooms of these companion plants.

These plant combinations are effective because they offer a balance of structure and seasonal change. Evergreen climbers for privacy can create a natural screen, while the addition of other plant types adds depth and interest. The all-season climbing greenery ensures that the garden remains lively and appealing throughout the year, making it a versatile choice for any garden design.

Best site and soil for evergreen success

Evergreen climbers, also known as year-round green climbing plants or winter-hardy vertical plants, thrive in various light conditions. They prefer full sun to partial shade, depending on the specific species. Factors like the amount of sunlight and surrounding structures can influence their growth. These climbing evergreen plants are generally not wind-sensitive, but providing a sheltered spot or using windbreaks can help protect them. The ideal soil for evergreen climbing plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. A mix of loam and sand is often suitable. Regular fertilisation supports their growth, ensuring they remain vibrant. Soil moisture is crucial; these climbers need consistent moisture but should not sit in waterlogged conditions. Wind and sun exposure can affect soil moisture levels, so monitoring is essential. Evergreen climbers prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Soil pH can be influenced by factors like rainfall and the type of organic matter used. Maintaining the right pH helps these climbers with persistent foliage to absorb nutrients effectively. With the right care, evergreen plants for fences and other structures can provide lush, year-round greenery.

    Planting guide for all-season climbers

Evergreen climbers, also known as non-deciduous climbing plants, can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots. However, avoid planting during frost periods. For plants with root balls, the best time is in spring or autumn. When planting evergreen climbing plants, consider the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. The number of plants per metre is crucial and can be found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is essential for climbing evergreen plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and water thoroughly after planting. Evergreen climbers need regular watering, especially in the first few weeks. This helps them establish strong roots. For fences, all-year-round green climbers provide excellent coverage. Leaf-retaining climbing plants are perfect for creating a lush, green backdrop. Year-round green climbing plants are ideal for adding persistent foliage to any garden. Climbing plants with year-round leaves offer a vibrant look throughout the seasons.

Maintenance Tips for Evergreen Climbing Plants

Evergreen climbers, also known as year-round green climbing plants, are perfect for adding greenery to fences and walls. Proper care ensures they thrive throughout the year.

    • Watering: Evergreen climbing plants need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Water deeply to reach the roots.
    • Pruning: Prune evergreen climbers in late winter or early spring. This helps maintain shape and encourages new growth. Use sharp, clean tools to avoid damaging the plant.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support growth. Follow the package instructions for the right amount. Fertilise again in mid-summer if needed.
    • Winter Protection: Most evergreen climbers are winter-hardy vertical plants, but young plants may need protection. Mulch around the base to insulate roots.
    • Transplanting: If necessary, transplant in early spring. Water well after moving to help the plant settle in its new location.
    • Dividing: Some evergreen climbers can be divided every few years to promote health. Do this in spring when the plant is actively growing.
