Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Mature height (cm)

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

USDA Hardness zones in °C

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Fruit-bearing plants
Fruit-bearing plants

Plants that form fruits or berries after flowering.

What defines a semi-shaded or light-shade patio plant?

Partial shade patio and balcony plants are perfect for areas that receive some sunlight but are not in full sun all day. These plants thrive in conditions where they get morning sun and afternoon shade, making them ideal for east-facing terraces. Commonly known as dappled light container plants or part-sun outdoor plants, they are versatile and can adapt to various light conditions. These plants are used to add greenery and colour to balconies and patios that do not receive full sunlight. Popular choices include Fuchsia, Hosta, and Impatiens, which are known for their vibrant blooms. Begonia and Heuchera are also excellent options for adding texture and interest. Partial shade patio and balcony plants are often chosen for their ability to bloom in filtered light, making them suitable for lightly shaded balconies. They are compact and can be grown in pots, making them perfect for small spaces. These plants are not only ornamental but also practical, as they can thrive in conditions that might not be suitable for other types of plants. Whether looking for the best balcony plants for partial shade or flowers for semi-shaded terraces, these plants offer a beautiful solution.

Traits of part-shade balcony blooms and greenery

Partial shade patio and balcony plants are perfect for areas that receive some sunlight but are not in full sun all day. These plants grow well in containers and can spread to fill the space available. They often have a compact form, making them ideal for small balconies or terraces. The development of these plants begins in early spring when they start to sprout. As the season progresses, they grow steadily, reaching maturity by late summer. The growth rate can depend on the amount of light and care they receive. The blooming period for partial shade patio and balcony plants varies. Many bloom in late spring to early summer, but this can change based on climate and weather conditions. Cooler temperatures and well-prepared soil can enhance blooming. The flowers of these plants come in various colours, from soft pastels to vibrant hues. The specific colour can depend on the plant species and the soil's pH level. Adequate light and care also play a role in the intensity of the bloom colours. Some partial shade plants are known for their pleasant fragrance, which can add an extra dimension to a garden. The scent can vary in intensity and is often influenced by the plant's age and health. Mature partial shade patio and balcony plants can reach different heights, usually between 30 to 60 cm. The height can be influenced by the plant's location and the care it receives. These plants are excellent for creating layers and adding interest to a garden space.

Partial shade patio and balcony plants are perfect for areas that receive dappled light or part-sun. These plants often have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be broad or narrow, with shades ranging from deep green to variegated patterns. The structure might be smooth or slightly hairy, helping them adapt to varying light conditions. Many of these plants retain their leaves year-round, providing consistent greenery, while others may shed leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate. Winter hardiness is crucial for terrace and balcony plants for partial shade. Factors like temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure affect their survival. Choosing the right species and ensuring proper soil conditions can enhance their resilience against cold weather. Most partial shade patio and balcony plants are evergreen, maintaining foliage throughout the year. However, some may lose leaves annually, influenced by species choice and environmental conditions. Heat and drought tolerance are vital for dappled light container plants. Origin, leaf structure, and root depth play roles in their ability to withstand dry spells. A waxy coating or fine hairs on leaves can reduce water loss, while deep roots help access moisture. These plants are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no danger, ensuring a safe environment. Partial shade patio and balcony plants support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and birds. Their long blooming periods and native-friendly traits help mimic natural habitats, promoting ecosystem balance and garden resilience.

Where to place plants in morning or dappled light

Partial shade patio and balcony plants are perfect for areas that receive morning or dappled light. These plants thrive in conditions where they get some sun but are protected from the harsh afternoon rays. Here are some ways to use these plants in your garden:

    • Use partial shade patio and balcony plants in borders to add texture and colour.
    • Group them together for a lush look in semi-shaded terrace areas.
    • Place them as solitary plants in pots to create focal points on balconies.
    • Create a natural screen by using them as a hedge or privacy barrier.
    • Decorate pergolas with light-shade balcony flowers for a charming effect.
    • Use them as underplanting to complement taller garden plants for lightly shaded balconies.
    • Choose compact part-shade outdoor plants for small spaces.
    • Opt for part-shade pot plants to brighten up east-facing terraces.

These versatile plants are ideal for adding greenery to any space with limited sunlight. Consider the best balcony plants for partial shade to enhance your outdoor area. For those looking to buy partial shade patio and balcony plants, there are many options available to suit different styles and preferences.

Best companion ideas for soft-light areas

Partial shade patio and balcony plants can be beautifully combined with various other plant types to create a vibrant garden. Consider pairing them with ferns, which thrive in similar light conditions. Ferns add lush greenery and texture, complementing the delicate blooms of partial shade patio and balcony plants. Another great option is hostas, known for their striking foliage. Their broad leaves provide a lovely contrast to the finer leaves of dappled light container plants. For a splash of colour, try adding astilbes. These flowers for semi-shaded terraces offer bright blooms that stand out against the greenery. The combination of these plants creates a balanced and visually appealing garden. The mix of textures and colours ensures that the garden remains interesting throughout the seasons. Additionally, these plants are all well-suited for part-sun outdoor areas, making them ideal for terraces and balconies with filtered light. By choosing the best balcony plants for partial shade, a garden can be transformed into a thriving oasis, even in limited sunlight.

Soil and watering for filtered-light success

Partial shade patio and balcony plants thrive in areas with filtered light. These plants prefer morning sun and afternoon shade, making them ideal for east-facing terraces. Wind can be a concern for these plants, so placing them near a wall or using windbreaks can help. The best soil for these plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Regular fertilisation supports growth, especially for light shade container plants. Soil moisture is crucial; ensure the soil is consistently moist but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so check regularly. The pH preference for these plants is slightly acidic to neutral. This balance helps in nutrient absorption, promoting healthy growth. Compact part-shade outdoor plants and ornamental plants for east-facing terraces benefit from these conditions, ensuring vibrant blooms and lush foliage.

When and how to plant partial shade flowers

Partial shade patio and balcony plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For plants with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost for optimal growth.

Plant spacing for partial shade patio and balcony plants depends on the plant type, size at planting, and growth rate. Check the Heijnen product page for specific details on the number of plants per metre. Generally, compact part-shade outdoor plants need less space, while larger varieties require more room to thrive.

Proper soil preparation is crucial for partial shade patio and balcony plants. Loosen the soil and mix in organic matter to improve drainage and nutrient content. This helps the roots establish quickly and supports healthy growth.

When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

Maintenance for Partial Shade Patio and Balcony Plants

Partial shade patio and balcony plants thrive in areas with limited sunlight. Proper care ensures healthy growth and vibrant blooms.
    • Watering: Check soil moisture regularly. Water when the top inch feels dry. Morning is ideal to prevent evaporation.
    • Pruning: Trim dead or overgrown parts in early spring. Use clean, sharp tools for best results.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer. Follow package instructions for quantity.
    • Repotting: Every 2-3 years, repot to refresh soil and provide more space. Do this in spring for optimal growth.
    • Winter Protection: Move pots to sheltered areas or use frost covers to protect from cold.
    • Dividing: If plants become crowded, divide them in spring. This encourages new growth and prevents overcrowding.
Partial shade patio and balcony plants, like semi-shaded terrace plants and light-shade balcony flowers, are perfect for part-sun potted plants. They are ideal for east-facing terraces and balconies with filtered light. Consider compact part-shade outdoor plants for smaller spaces.
