Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

USDA Hardness zones in °C

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Fruit-bearing plants
Fruit-bearing plants

Plants that form fruits or berries after flowering.

Tall shrubs

Tall shrubs create privacy and add height to any garden. These towering ornamental bushes are perfect for screening and defining boundaries. Robust tall shrubs also serve as stunning background plants, enhancing the overall landscape with their impressive presence.

What Defines Tall Shrubs in the Garden?

Tall shrubs are an essential part of many gardens, providing structure and privacy. These plants, also known as statement shrubs or large bushy plants, can reach impressive heights, making them ideal for creating natural screens. Popular choices include Rhododendron, Hydrangea, and Buddleja, which are known for their robust growth and beautiful blooms. Tall shrubs are often used for garden privacy, acting as screening shrubs that block unwanted views. They are also perfect for the back of borders, adding depth and interest to garden designs. Fast-growing tall shrubs are particularly useful for those looking to quickly establish a private space. In addition to their practical uses, tall-growing ornamental shrubs like Camellia and Viburnum offer aesthetic appeal with their vibrant flowers and lush foliage. These tall perennial bushes are not only functional but also enhance the beauty of any garden. Whether used as boundary shrubs or upright shrubs, they provide a stunning backdrop and contribute to a well-balanced garden landscape.

Key features of towering or large flowering bushes

Tall shrubs, also known as high-growing garden shrubs or towering ornamental bushes, are a popular choice for creating privacy and structure in gardens. These robust tall shrubs can reach impressive heights, often growing between 1.5 to 3 metres, depending on the species and growing conditions. They spread widely, making them ideal as screening shrubs or boundary shrubs. The development of tall shrubs begins in early spring when new shoots emerge. As the season progresses, these tall-growing ornamental shrubs rapidly gain height, reaching their full size by late summer. The growth rate can vary, with some fast-growing tall shrubs achieving significant height within a few months. Tall shrubs typically bloom in late spring to early summer. The exact timing depends on factors like climate, weather conditions, and the shrub's age. Warmer temperatures and well-prepared soil can encourage earlier blooming. Proper care, including regular watering and fertilisation, also plays a crucial role. The bloom colours of tall shrubs vary widely, ranging from whites and pinks to vibrant reds and purples. The specific hue depends on the species, cultivar, and environmental factors such as soil quality and light exposure. These shrubs thrive in sunny spots, which enhances their flowering potential. While not all tall shrubs are known for their fragrance, some species offer a pleasant scent. The intensity of the aroma can be influenced by the type of shrub, its age, and the time of day. Fragrant tall shrubs can add an extra sensory dimension to a garden. When fully grown, tall shrubs can create impressive sightlines and add layers to garden design. They are perfect for the back of borders or as background shrubs. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care ensures these shrubs reach their full potential. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider the option to buy tall shrubs for added privacy and beauty.

Tall shrubs, also known as statement shrubs or large bushy plants, are a popular choice for creating privacy in gardens. The leaves of these shrubs can vary greatly in shape, colour, and texture. Some have glossy, dark green leaves, while others may have lighter, more textured foliage. The leaf structure can influence how well the shrub retains its leaves in winter, with some tall shrubs being evergreen and others deciduous, losing their leaves annually. Factors like species, climate, and location play a role in this process.

When it comes to winter hardiness, tall shrubs can vary. Some are robust and can withstand cold temperatures, while others may be more sensitive to frost. The amount of wind and soil conditions can also affect their ability to survive winter. In terms of heat and drought resistance, many tall shrubs are well-adapted, often having deep root systems or waxy leaves to conserve moisture. Origin and leaf structure are key factors in their resilience.

Regarding safety, tall shrubs are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute positively to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for wildlife. These shrubs can support ecosystems by offering nesting sites and attracting pollinators, enhancing the garden's resistance to pests and diseases. Tall shrubs are not only functional but also add aesthetic value, making them an excellent choice for garden privacy and as background shrubs.

Where to plant tall shrubs for screens or backdrops

Tall shrubs, also known as high-growing garden shrubs or towering ornamental bushes, are perfect for creating privacy and adding structure to a garden. These robust tall shrubs can be used in various ways to enhance outdoor spaces. Here are some ideas on how to incorporate tall shrubs into a garden:

    • Screening shrubs: Use tall shrubs to create natural screens for privacy. They are ideal for blocking views and reducing noise.
    • Back of borders: Plant tall-growing ornamental shrubs at the back of borders to provide a lush backdrop for smaller plants.
    • Boundary shrubs: Define garden boundaries with tall perennial bushes. They can act as living fences, offering both beauty and function.
    • Upright shrubs: Choose upright shrubs for narrow spaces where width is limited but height is needed.
    • Background shrubs: Use these shrubs as background plants to highlight colourful flowers in the foreground.
For those looking to buy tall shrubs, consider options that suit the specific needs of the garden, such as fast-growing tall shrubs for quick results or tall shrubs for garden privacy. These versatile plants can transform any garden into a private and serene space.

Combining tall shrubs with lower layers

Tall shrubs can create a stunning backdrop in any garden. These statement shrubs work well with a variety of plant types. For a layered look, combine tall shrubs with medium-sized perennials like Echinacea or Rudbeckia. These add colour and texture beneath the large bushy plants. For a more diverse garden, mix in ground covers such as creeping thyme or sedum. This combination not only enhances visual interest but also supports biodiversity by attracting pollinators. One beautiful combination is tall-growing ornamental shrubs with ornamental grasses like Miscanthus. The grasses sway in the wind, adding movement to the garden. Another option is pairing robust tall shrubs with ferns. The ferns' delicate fronds contrast nicely with the sturdy structure of the shrubs, creating a balanced look. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also practical. Tall shrubs for garden privacy can act as screening shrubs, providing a natural barrier. Fast-growing tall shrubs are ideal for creating quick privacy. By using tall perennial bushes as boundary shrubs, a garden gains both beauty and function. These upright shrubs serve as background shrubs, making them perfect for the back of borders.

Conditions for upright growth and balance

Tall shrubs, also known as high-growing garden shrubs or towering ornamental bushes, thrive in various light conditions. They generally prefer full sun to partial shade, depending on the specific species. Adequate sunlight is crucial for their growth, but too much direct sun can sometimes cause stress. Wind sensitivity is another factor to consider. Tall shrubs can be vulnerable to strong winds, which may cause damage. Planting them in sheltered spots or using windbreaks can help protect them. The ideal soil for tall shrubs is well-draining and rich in organic matter. A mix of loam and sand often works well, providing the necessary nutrients and drainage. Regular fertilisation supports their growth, ensuring they remain healthy and robust. Soil moisture is also important; these shrubs prefer consistently moist soil but not waterlogged conditions. Factors like wind and sun exposure can affect soil moisture levels, so regular watering may be needed. Tall shrubs generally prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Soil pH can influence nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can be beneficial. By understanding these needs, tall-growing ornamental shrubs can flourish, providing excellent screening and privacy in gardens.

How and when to plant tall shrub varieties

Tall shrubs, also known as statement shrubs or large bushy plants, can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls or bare roots, the best time to plant is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant spacing for tall shrubs, it's important to think about the type of shrub, its size at planting, growth rate, and the number of plants per metre. Information about the number of plants per metre or square metre is usually available on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for tall shrubs. The soil should be well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and mix compost into the soil. For planting, place the shrub in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the ground. Fill the hole with soil and water thoroughly. After planting, regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks, to help the shrub establish. Tall shrubs are excellent for creating privacy and adding structure to a garden.

    Maintenance for Tall Shrubs

Tall shrubs, also known as high-growing garden shrubs or towering ornamental bushes, require proper care to thrive. Here are some tips for maintaining these robust tall shrubs:

    • Care and Maintenance: Tall shrubs need well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Regularly check for any signs of stress or damage.
    • Pruning Advice: Prune tall shrubs in late winter or early spring to encourage healthy growth. Use sharp tools to remove dead or crossing branches.
    • Fertilising: Fertilise tall shrubs in early spring with a balanced fertiliser. This helps promote strong growth and flowering.
    • Watering: Water tall shrubs deeply once a week, especially during dry spells. Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged.
    • Dividing and Splitting: If necessary, divide tall shrubs every few years in early spring to maintain vigour.
    • Winter Protection: Protect tall shrubs from harsh winter winds by wrapping them in burlap or using mulch around the base.
    • Transplanting: Transplant tall shrubs in early spring or autumn. Water thoroughly after moving to help them settle.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding tall shrubs for privacy or as background shrubs. These tall-growing ornamental shrubs are perfect for creating a natural boundary or adding height to the back of borders. Whether you want to buy tall shrubs or learn more about their care, these tips will help keep them healthy and thriving.
