Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Traits of cold-hardy and weather-tolerant species

Hardy plants are known for their ability to thrive in challenging conditions. These frost-resistant outdoor plants can spread widely, adapting to various garden spaces. They grow steadily, starting from early spring and reaching maturity by late summer. The development of hardy plants is influenced by factors like soil quality and care. The blooming period for hardy plants varies, often occurring in late spring to early summer. Climate and weather conditions, such as temperature and sunlight, play a crucial role. Proper soil preparation and regular maintenance also contribute to their successful flowering. The bloom colours of hardy plants range from vibrant reds to soft pastels, depending on the species and cultivar. Soil type, light exposure, and climate can affect the intensity and shade of the blooms. Some hardy plants are known for their pleasant fragrance, which can enhance the garden's biodiversity. The scent may come from the leaves, stems, or flowers, and its intensity can vary with the plant's age and care. Mature hardy plants can reach impressive heights, adding structure to the garden. Their height is influenced by the planting location, care, and potential combinations with other plants. Choosing the right spot ensures they complement the garden's design. For those looking to buy hardy plants, these cold-hardy plants are ideal for creating a resilient garden that withstands harsh winters. They are perfect for anyone seeking frost-tolerant plants that can overwinter successfully.

Hardy plants are essential for any garden, especially in regions with harsh winters. These frost-tolerant plants have unique leaf shapes, colours, and structures that help them survive cold conditions. Leaves can be thick and waxy, providing protection against frost. Some hardy plants, like evergreen varieties, retain their leaves throughout winter, while others shed them, depending on the species and climate. Winter hardiness in hardy garden plants depends on several factors, including temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure. Cold-resistant plants thrive in well-drained soil, which prevents root damage during freezing periods. Choosing the best hardy plants for UK winters ensures a resilient garden. Many hardy plants are evergreen, maintaining their foliage year-round. However, some hardys plants lose their leaves annually, influenced by species and location. Climate and placement in the garden also play a role in whether a plant remains green or not. Heat and drought resistance are vital for weather-tolerant garden plants. Originating from arid regions, these plants often have deep root systems and waxy or hairy leaves to conserve moisture. They adapt well to dry conditions, making them ideal for gardens with varying weather. In terms of safety, hardy plants are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. While some may have mild toxicity, they are harmless with normal garden use. Hardy plants contribute significantly to biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for wildlife, supporting ecosystems. By mimicking natural habitats, these plants enhance garden resilience against diseases and pests, promoting a balanced environment.

Good companions for resilient plant designs

Hardy plants are a great choice for any garden, especially in areas with harsh winters. These weather-tolerant garden plants can be combined with various other plant types to create a beautiful and resilient garden. For example, mixing hardy plants with evergreen shrubs like boxwood or holly can provide year-round structure and interest. Adding ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus or Pennisetum can enhance the texture and movement in the garden. Another excellent combination is pairing hardy plants with perennials like Echinacea or Rudbeckia, which offer vibrant colours and attract pollinators. These combinations not only look stunning but also ensure that the garden remains lively throughout the year. The frost-tolerant nature of these plants means they can withstand cold temperatures, making them ideal for UK winters. Choosing frost-proof garden plants ensures that the garden remains attractive even in the coldest months. Winter-hardy garden plants like hellebores or bergenias can add colour and life when most other plants are dormant. These combinations of cold-resistant plants create a garden that is both beautiful and practical, providing interest and resilience in any climate.

Soil and site conditions for hardy plant success

Hardy plants thrive in various light conditions, but most prefer full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth and flowering. In areas with harsh winters, these plants benefit from a sunny spot to maximise warmth. Wind can be a challenge for hardy plants. To protect them, consider planting near a windbreak like a fence or hedge. This reduces wind exposure and helps the plants stay strong. The ideal soil for hardy plants is well-draining and rich in nutrients. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth. Soil moisture is crucial; too much water can harm the roots, while too little can cause stress. Wind and sun can dry the soil quickly, so mulching helps retain moisture. Hardy plants prefer a neutral to slightly acidic pH level. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing the soil can guide adjustments. Adding lime or sulphur can help achieve the desired pH. With the right conditions, hardy plants, also known as frost-resistant outdoor plants or cold-hardy plants, can withstand harsh winters and thrive in the garden.

Planting tips for frost-proof outdoor plants

Hardy plants are ideal for gardens facing harsh winters. These weather-tolerant garden plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are best. Consider the plant type, size at planting, and growth rate when deciding on spacing. The number of plants per metre is usually listed on the product page. Proper soil preparation is key for hardy plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, and water thoroughly. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks. These winterproof plants will thrive with the right care, becoming a beautiful part of any garden.

    Maintenance of Hardys Plants

Hardy plants are perfect for gardens that face cold and changing weather. These frost-resistant outdoor plants require specific care to thrive. Regular maintenance ensures they remain healthy and vibrant.

    • Watering: Hardy plants need consistent watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Water early in the morning or late in the afternoon to prevent evaporation.
    • Pruning: Prune hardy plants in late winter or early spring. This encourages new growth and removes dead or damaged branches. Use clean, sharp tools for the best results.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support growth. Follow the package instructions for the correct amount and frequency.
    • Dividing: Some hardy plants benefit from dividing every few years. This process, best done in early spring, helps rejuvenate the plant and encourages more blooms.
    • Winter Protection: Although hardy, some plants may need extra protection in severe winters. Mulch around the base to insulate roots and consider covering with a frost cloth during extreme cold.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant hardy plants in early spring. Ensure the new location has similar conditions to the original spot. Water thoroughly after moving.
For those looking to enhance their garden with these resilient beauties, consider options to buy hardy plants that suit your climate. These cold-hardy plants are ideal for creating a garden that withstands harsh winters and changing weather conditions.

    Frequently Asked Questions Hardy plants

What function can winter-hardy plants have in a garden?

Winter-hardy plants serve multiple functions in a garden. They can provide year-round interest with evergreen foliage or persistent structures even during the colder months. In addition to their aesthetic role, they often serve as the backbone of the garden, offering structure and continuity. Their resilience also makes them ideal for gardeners seeking low-maintenance options. Furthermore, many winter-hardy plants support wildlife, providing food and shelter throughout the year.

Which is the best period for transplanting winter-hardy plants?

The best period for transplanting winter-hardy plants aligns with their planting period, which is during the dormancy phase from late fall to early spring. This timing minimizes stress on the plants and allows them to recover from the transplant process before the growing season starts. It is important to ensure that the plants are well-watered after transplanting to facilitate root establishment and to provide mulch for insulation against temperature fluctuations.

Which plants can be combined well with winter-hardy plants?

Winter-hardy plants can be effectively combined with a variety of other plant types to create a diverse and resilient garden. They pair well with bee-friendly and butterfly-friendly plants, enhancing the garden's ecological value. Ornamental grasses offer contrasting textures, while shrubs and bushes provide a backdrop that highlights the winter-hardy plants' features. Ground cover plants can fill in gaps, and rock garden plants complement their robust nature, creating a harmonious landscape.

In which soil type do most winter-hardy plants grow well?

Most winter-hardy plants prefer well-draining soil to prevent root rot during wetter seasons. While individual requirements may vary, a general-purpose garden soil rich in organic matter typically provides a suitable growing medium. Some varieties, such as Sedum, may prefer a more gritty or sandy soil to replicate their natural, rocky habitats. Ensuring the correct soil conditions is essential for the health and vigor of winter-hardy plants.

What popular types of winter-hardy plants are there?

Popular varieties of winter-hardy plants include Phlox paniculata 'Laura', known for its vibrant blooms, and the fragrant Nepeta × faassenii, commonly used in borders. Asarum europaeum provides lush ground cover, while Potentilla nepalensis 'Miss Willmott' adds a touch of color with its deep pink flowers. For height and structure, Centranthus ruber 'Coccineus' is a great choice. Sedum cyaneum 'Sachalin' is valued for its succulent foliage and azure flowers.

In what period can I best plant winter-hardy plants?

The optimal planting period for winter-hardy plants is during the dormancy phase, from late fall to early spring, avoiding periods of frost. This timing allows the plants to establish roots in their new location before the stress of the growing season begins. Additionally, cooler temperatures can reduce the need for frequent watering. For regions with harsh winters, it is recommended to plant in early fall, giving the plants time to establish before the cold sets in.
