Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application

Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

With their vigorous growth and resilience, they are a reliable choice for any garden.

Features of resilient and durable edge plants

Strong border plants are essential for creating a robust garden. These hardy garden borders are known for their ability to withstand various weather conditions. They grow in different forms, often spreading wide to cover more ground. This makes them ideal for exposed borders and windy gardens. The development of tough flowering edge plants begins in early spring. They start with small shoots that gradually grow into full-sized plants by summer. Their growth is influenced by the soil quality and the amount of sunlight they receive. Strong border plants typically bloom from late spring to early autumn. The blooming period can vary depending on the climate, temperature, and care they receive. In cooler climates, they may bloom later, while in warmer areas, they might start earlier. The flowers of these durable border plants come in various colours, ranging from vibrant reds to soft pastels. The specific colour can depend on the plant variety and the soil conditions. Some robust border plants are known for their pleasant fragrance. The intensity of the scent can be affected by the plant's age and the time of day. When fully grown, these ultra-tough border varieties can reach impressive heights. This makes them perfect for creating layers in the garden and providing a backdrop for smaller plants. Choosing the right location and providing proper care will ensure they thrive. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider investing in these resilient border perennials. They offer beauty and strength, making them a valuable addition to any garden.

Strong border plants are known for their unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. These plants often have thick, waxy leaves that help them retain moisture, making them ideal for various weather conditions. The leaves can range from deep green to silvery hues, depending on the species. Some strong border plants are evergreen, keeping their foliage year-round, while others may shed leaves in winter, influenced by climate and location.

Winter hardiness is a key feature of strong border plants. They can withstand cold temperatures and frost, thanks to their robust nature. Factors like soil conditions, wind exposure, and the duration of frost periods play a role in their survival. Choosing the right species for the local climate ensures they thrive even in harsh winters.

Many strong border plants are evergreen, providing year-round interest in the garden. However, some may lose their leaves annually, similar to most perennials. This depends on the plant type, climate, and placement in the garden.

Heat and drought resistance are vital for strong border plants. Originating from arid regions, these plants often have deep root systems and waxy or hairy leaves to reduce water loss. They can survive in dry conditions, making them perfect for gardens with limited water supply.

Regarding toxicity, strong border plants are generally safe for gardens. While some may have mild toxins, they are harmless with normal garden use. It's important to ensure safety when gardening with children and pets.

Strong border plants contribute significantly to biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for insects and birds, supporting the ecosystem. Their long blooming periods and native-friendly traits make them excellent for enhancing garden resilience against pests and diseases.

Where to use robust borders in exposed conditions

Strong border plants are essential for creating a beautiful and resilient garden. These tough border plants can withstand harsh weather and provide structure and colour throughout the year. Here are some ways to use robust border plants in the garden:

    • Use strong border plants in a border to create a defined edge that can handle wind and weather.
    • Plant hardy garden borders in groups for a lush and full appearance, perfect for exposed areas.
    • Choose tough flowering edge plants as a solitary feature to draw attention and add interest.
    • Consider durable border plants for a hedge or boundary to provide privacy and protection.
    • Use ultra-tough border varieties to create blocks of colour and texture in the garden.
    • Plant storm-resistant border perennials along a fence or wall for added support and beauty.
    • Opt for heat- and drought-resistant plants in pots or containers for flexibility and style.
    • Use vigorous growers as underplanting to fill gaps and add depth to the garden.
    • Choose weather-hardy border bloomers for a windscreen or privacy screen in exposed areas.
    • Incorporate resilient border perennials in an insect-friendly corner to boost biodiversity.

By selecting the right strong border plants, it's possible to create a garden that thrives in any condition. Consider buying strong border plants to ensure a robust and beautiful outdoor space.

    Best partners for weather-resistant planting

Strong border plants can be combined with various plant types to create a beautiful and resilient garden. Pairing tough border plants with hardy flowers like Echinacea or durable border plants such as Sedum can enhance the garden's appeal. These combinations work well because they are all weather-hardy border bloomers, thriving in different conditions. For a unique look, consider mixing strong plants for windy gardens like ornamental grasses with storm-resistant border perennials like Achillea. This combination not only adds texture but also ensures the garden remains vibrant through changing weather. Another option is to plant heat- and drought-resistant plants like Agastache alongside ultra-tough border varieties like Rudbeckia. These vigorous growers provide a stunning display while being resilient to harsh conditions. By choosing these robust border plants, the garden will be filled with colour and life, no matter the weather.

Site and soil for maximum plant strength

Strong border plants thrive in full sun to partial shade. Sunlight is crucial for their growth, but too much can cause stress. Consider the plant's position to ensure it gets the right balance of light. Wind can affect these tough border plants, making them vulnerable to damage. Planting them near a fence or wall can provide protection. The ideal soil for strong border plants is well-draining and rich in nutrients. Adding compost can improve soil quality, promoting healthy growth. Regular fertilisation is key to maintaining robust border plants. Soil moisture is important; too much water can lead to root rot, while too little can cause wilting. Monitor the soil's moisture level, especially in windy or sunny conditions. Strong border plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Testing the soil can help determine if adjustments are needed. Maintaining the right pH ensures that the plants can absorb nutrients effectively. With the right care, these hardy garden borders will flourish, providing a beautiful and durable addition to any garden.

Planting tips for sturdy border planting

Strong border plants can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with roots or clumps, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The distance between strong border plants depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Information about the number of plants per metre is available on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for strong border plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells to help establish roots. This care ensures robust border plants thrive in any garden setting.

Care and Support for Strong Border Plants

Strong border plants are ideal for creating a vibrant garden. These robust border plants require specific care to thrive. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture to determine if watering is needed. Pruning is beneficial for maintaining shape and encouraging growth. The best time to prune is in early spring using sharp tools. Fertilising is crucial for healthy growth. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and mid-summer. For those looking to expand their garden, dividing these plants every few years can promote vigour. This should be done in early autumn. Winter protection is important for some varieties. Mulching can help insulate roots during colder months. Transplanting is best done in early spring. Ensure the new location has well-drained soil and water thoroughly after moving. For those interested in expanding their collection, consider options to buy strong border plants.

    • Water regularly, especially in dry conditions.
    • Prune in early spring for shape and growth.
    • Fertilise in spring and mid-summer.
    • Divide every few years in early autumn.
    • Provide winter protection with mulch.
    • Transplant in early spring with care.
