Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

They are known for their ability to survive in tough conditions, making them ideal for drought-tolerant gardens. Some popular types include Lavandula, Sedum, Eryngium, Santolina, and Thymus. These hardy plants for dry areas are not only resilient but also add beauty to any garden. Garden plants for dry soil are also called dry-soil loving plants. They are often referred to as drought-tolerant plants because they can withstand long periods without water. These plants are used in gardens to reduce water usage and are perfect for creating low-water garden spaces. They are also great for planting on sunny slopes or in nutrient-poor soil, where other plants might struggle to grow. Using garden plants for dry conditions can transform a garden into a vibrant space with minimal maintenance. They are excellent choices for those looking to create a sustainable garden that requires less water and care. Whether planting in sandy soil or on a sunny slope, these plants will thrive and bring life to any garden.

Characteristics of low-water and sun-hardy species

Garden plants for dry soil are perfect for areas with limited water. These drought-tolerant garden plants have unique growth patterns. They often spread wide to capture as much moisture as possible. Some low-water outdoor plants grow in clusters, while others form a dense mat, making them ideal for dry soil conditions. The development of these plants is fascinating. From the moment they sprout, they adapt to dry conditions. As they mature, they become more resilient, thriving even in nutrient-poor soil. Their growth is steady, and they reach full maturity with minimal water. The blooming months for garden plants for dry soil vary. Many bloom in late spring to early summer. Climate and weather play a big role. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil help them flourish. Proper care and soil preparation enhance their blooming potential. The bloom colours of these plants are diverse. They range from vibrant yellows to soft purples. The type of plant and soil conditions affect the colour intensity. Sunlight and climate also influence the hues, making each plant unique. Some garden plants for dry soil are known for their fragrance. The scent can come from the leaves or flowers. The intensity of the aroma depends on the plant type and growing conditions. These scents can attract beneficial insects, adding to garden biodiversity. Mature height varies among these plants. Some remain low, while others can grow tall, creating layers in the garden. Choosing the right location and providing proper care ensures they reach their full potential. These plants can be combined with other sun- and drought-loving perennials for a stunning display.

Garden plants for dry soil have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. These plants often have small, thick leaves to reduce water loss. The colours can range from grey-green to silver, helping reflect sunlight. The leaf texture might be waxy or hairy, providing protection against heat and wind. Most dry-soil loving plants are evergreen, keeping their leaves year-round, which is ideal for maintaining garden interest in winter. Factors like plant type and climate influence whether they keep their leaves in winter.

Hardy plants for dry areas are generally frost-resistant. They can survive low temperatures, but extreme frost can be challenging. The plant's location, such as sheltered spots, and soil conditions, like well-drained soil, play a role in their frost tolerance. These plants are often chosen for their ability to withstand cold and windy conditions.

Many drought-tolerant plants are evergreen, meaning they retain their leaves throughout the year. This characteristic is influenced by the plant species and the local climate. In regions with mild winters, these plants are more likely to stay green.

Heat-tolerant garden plants are well-suited for dry conditions. Their origins often trace back to arid regions, and they have adaptations like deep root systems and waxy leaves to conserve moisture. These plants thrive in sunny, dry gardens, making them perfect for sandy soil planting.

Garden plants for dry conditions are generally safe for gardens with children and pets. While some plants might have mild toxicity, they are harmless with normal garden use. It's always wise to research specific plants to ensure safety.

Plants for dry soil contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for wildlife. They often bloom for extended periods, attracting pollinators. By mimicking natural habitats, these plants help maintain ecosystem balance and increase garden resilience against pests.

Good companions for dry soil plantings

Garden plants for dry soil can be beautifully combined with various other plant types to create a vibrant and resilient garden. Hardy plants for dry areas, such as lavender and sedum, pair well with ornamental grasses like blue fescue. These combinations thrive in sandy soil planting and are perfect for sunny slopes. Another excellent pairing is rosemary with yarrow, both being drought-tolerant plants that add texture and colour to the garden. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also practical. Dry-soil loving plants like these require minimal watering, making them ideal for low-water garden plants. They are also heat-tolerant garden plants, ensuring they flourish even in the hottest months. By choosing plants for poor soil, such as succulents and thyme, the garden remains lush without the need for rich soil. Incorporating sun- and drought-loving perennials ensures a garden that is both sustainable and beautiful. These plants for nutrient-poor soil are perfect for creating a garden that is easy to maintain and full of life. Selecting the best plants for dry gardens ensures a thriving outdoor space that withstands dry conditions effortlessly.

Soil prep and care for dry-loving plants

Garden plants for dry soil thrive in sunny spots. They need full sun to grow well. Sunlight helps these drought-tolerant garden plants to develop strong roots. Wind can be a problem for these plants. It dries out the soil quickly. To protect them, plant them near a wall or use windbreaks. The best soil for low-water outdoor plants is sandy or gravelly. This type of soil drains well, which is important for plants that like dry soil. Adding compost can improve the soil's nutrients. Regular fertilising helps these plants grow better. Bodenvochtigheid is crucial for dry soil plants. They prefer dry conditions, so avoid overwatering. Wind and sun can dry the soil, so mulch can help retain moisture. The pH level for garden plants for dry soil should be neutral to slightly alkaline. This helps them absorb nutrients better. Testing the soil pH can ensure the right conditions. These plants are perfect for sunny slopes and areas with poor soil. They are heat-tolerant and can handle nutrient-poor conditions. With the right care, these plants will thrive in any garden.

How and when to plant for dry conditions

Garden plants for dry soil can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For plants with roots or clumps, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, climate, and plant variety affect planting time. When planting, consider the distance between each plant. The type of plant, its size at planting, growth rate, and the number of plants per metre are important. This information is usually available on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for dry-soil loving plants. Loosen the soil and mix in organic matter to improve drainage and nutrient content. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, and water thoroughly. After planting, water regularly until the plant is established. Hardy plants for dry areas need less water once settled. Drought-tolerant plants thrive in poor soil and sunny spots, making them ideal for gardens with dry conditions.

Maintenance Tips for Dry Soil Plants

Garden plants for dry soil thrive with the right care. These drought-tolerant garden plants need specific attention to flourish.

    • Care and Maintenance: Choose plants that like dry soil, such as sun- and drought-loving perennials. Ensure they are planted in sandy soil for optimal growth.
    • Pruning Advice: Prune dry soil plants in early spring. Use sharp tools to remove dead or damaged branches, promoting healthy growth.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring. Use sparingly, as these plants thrive in nutrient-poor soil.
    • Watering: Water deeply but infrequently. Check soil moisture by inserting a finger; if dry, water thoroughly.
    • Dividing and Splitting: Divide plants every 3-4 years in autumn to maintain vigour. This helps manage plant size and encourages new growth.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base to protect roots from frost. This is crucial for heat-tolerant garden plants.
    • Transplanting: Transplant in early spring. Water well after moving to reduce transplant shock.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider options to buy garden plants for dry soil that suit your specific conditions. These plants are perfect for sunny slopes and can withstand heat, making them ideal for dry conditions.
