Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Flowering month
Flowering month

The month(s) in which the plant flowers under normal (weather) conditions.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

USDA Hardness zones in °C

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Fruit-bearing plants
Fruit-bearing plants

Plants that form fruits or berries after flowering.

Hardy shrubs

Hardy bushes thrive in cold climates, offering vibrant colour and structure to any garden. These frost-resistant ornamental bushes withstand harsh winters, ensuring year-round beauty. Ideal for those seeking low-maintenance, weather-tolerant flowering bushes that endure and flourish despite challenging conditions.

What are frost-resistant and cold-hardy bushes?

Hardy bushes are plants that can survive in cold weather conditions. These bushes are perfect for gardens in areas with harsh winters. They are known for their ability to withstand frost and low temperatures, making them ideal for UK gardens. Hardy bushes include species like Cornus, Rosa rugosa, Forsythia, Philadelphus, and Hydrangea. These plants are not only tough but also add beauty to the garden with their flowers. Hardy bushes are also called weather-tolerant flowering bushes or winterproof garden bushes. These names highlight their ability to thrive in different weather conditions. They are often used as frost-tolerant bushes or winter-hardy flowering shrubs for UK gardens. These bushes are perfect for creating a garden that looks beautiful all year round. In the garden, hardy bushes are used for various purposes. They can be planted as ornamental shrubs to add colour and texture. They are also great for creating privacy screens or windbreaks. With their strong and climate-tolerant nature, these bushes are a reliable choice for any garden looking to withstand cold winters.

Traits of weatherproof and winterproof flowering shrubs

Hardy bushes, also known as frost-resistant ornamental bushes or cold-hardy garden bushes, are perfect for gardens that experience cold winters. These shrubs have a robust growth pattern, often spreading wide to create a dense appearance. They can adapt to various soil types, making them versatile for different garden settings. The development of hardy bushes begins in early spring when new shoots emerge. As the season progresses, these shrubs grow steadily, reaching their full size by late summer. The growth rate can vary depending on the specific type and care provided. Hardy bushes typically bloom in late spring to early summer. The exact timing can be influenced by climate, weather conditions, and the age of the plant. Proper soil preparation and regular care can enhance their blooming period. The flowers of hardy bushes come in a range of colours, from soft pastels to vibrant hues. Factors such as the specific species, soil quality, and light exposure can affect the intensity and shade of the blooms. While not all hardy bushes are known for their fragrance, some varieties do offer a pleasant scent. The intensity of the aroma can depend on the type of bush and its growing conditions. Mature hardy bushes can reach varying heights, often between 1 to 3 metres. Their height can be influenced by the planting location, care, and the specific variety chosen. These shrubs are excellent for creating layers in the garden and can be combined with other plants for a visually appealing landscape.

Hardy bushes are a great choice for gardens, offering a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. These bushes often have oval or lance-shaped leaves, with colours ranging from deep green to variegated patterns. The leaf structure can be smooth or slightly hairy, which helps in retaining moisture. In winter, many hardy bushes keep their leaves, providing year-round interest. Factors like species and climate influence whether they are evergreen or deciduous.

Winter hardiness is a key feature of hardy bushes. They can withstand cold temperatures, making them ideal for frost-tolerant gardens. The ability to survive frost depends on the bush type, soil conditions, and wind exposure. Planting in sheltered spots can enhance their frost resistance.

Most hardy bushes are evergreen, maintaining their foliage throughout the year. This characteristic depends on the species and the garden's climate. In milder climates, these bushes are more likely to retain their leaves.

Heat and drought resistance are also important for hardy bushes. Originating from various climates, they often have deep root systems and waxy or hairy leaves to conserve water. These features help them thrive in dry conditions, making them strong outdoor bushes.

Regarding safety, hardy bushes are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no risk, ensuring a safe environment for all.

Hardy bushes contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for wildlife. Their long-lasting blooms and insect-friendly nature support ecosystems, making them valuable for gardens aiming to mimic natural habitats and enhance resilience against pests.

Best use of hardy bushes in exposed and open gardens

Hardy bushes, also known as frost-resistant ornamental bushes or cold-hardy garden bushes, are perfect for gardens in the UK. These shrubs are designed to withstand cold winters and still provide beauty and structure. Here are some ways to use hardy bushes in the garden:

    • Border: Hardy bushes can create a beautiful border, adding colour and texture even in winter.
    • Group planting: Planting these bushes in groups can create a stunning visual impact and provide shelter for wildlife.
    • Hedge or boundary: Use hardy bushes as a hedge to define garden boundaries and offer privacy.
    • Pot or planter: These bushes thrive in pots, making them ideal for patios or small spaces.
    • Windbreak: Hardy bushes can act as a windbreak, protecting more delicate plants from harsh winds.
    • Insect corner: Create a biodiversity zone by planting hardy bushes that attract beneficial insects.
Consider adding hardy flowering shrubs to your garden for year-round interest. These frost-tolerant bushes are not only strong outdoor bushes but also climate-tolerant, making them a great choice for any garden. For those looking to buy hardy bushes, these winter-hardy flowering shrubs are a reliable option for UK gardens.

Pairing hardy bushes with resilient perennials

Hardy bushes, also known as weather-tolerant flowering bushes or winterproof garden bushes, can be beautifully combined with various plant types in the garden. These frost-tolerant bushes pair well with resilient perennials like hellebores and sedums. Hellebores, with their early blooms, complement the structure of hardy flowering shrubs, while sedums add texture and colour throughout the seasons. Another great combination is with ornamental grasses such as miscanthus or pennisetum. These grasses provide movement and contrast to the strong outdoor bushes, creating a dynamic garden scene. Frost-proof ornamental shrubs like viburnum or mahonia can also be paired with winter-hardy flowering shrubs for UK gardens, offering a mix of evergreen foliage and seasonal blooms. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also practical. Hardy bushes and their companions are climate-tolerant, making them ideal for gardens that experience cold winters. The mix of textures, colours, and forms ensures year-round interest and resilience, providing a garden that thrives even in challenging weather conditions.

Site and soil for hardy plant success

Hardy bushes, also known as frost-resistant ornamental bushes or cold-hardy garden bushes, thrive in various light conditions. They prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Factors like location and surrounding structures can affect light exposure. These bushes are generally wind-resistant, but planting them near a fence or wall can provide extra protection from strong winds. The ideal soil for hardy bushes is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports growth, especially in nutrient-poor soils. Soil moisture is crucial; these bushes need consistent moisture but not soggy conditions. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Hardy bushes prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH can be influenced by rainfall and the type of soil. Testing the soil pH ensures the right conditions for these frost-tolerant bushes. With the right care, hardy flowering shrubs can become strong outdoor bushes that withstand cold winters and overwinter successfully.

Planting tips for tough flowering shrubs

Hardy bushes, also known as weather-tolerant flowering bushes, can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots. However, avoid planting during frost periods. For those with roots or clumps, the best time is in spring or autumn. The planting distance for hardy bushes depends on the type, size at planting, and growth rate. Always check the plant properties on the Heijnen product page for the number of plants per metre or square metre. Proper soil preparation is crucial for hardy bushes. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the bush, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry periods to help the bushes establish. Winterproof garden bushes, like frost-tolerant bushes, are ideal for creating a garden that withstands cold winters. These strong outdoor bushes are climate-tolerant and can overwinter successfully, making them perfect for gardens in colder regions.

    Maintenance for Hardy Bushes

Hardy bushes, also known as frost-resistant ornamental bushes or cold-hardy garden bushes, are perfect for gardens in colder climates. Proper care ensures they thrive year-round.

    • Care and Maintenance: Hardy bushes need well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Regularly check for dead branches and remove them to promote growth.
    • Pruning Advice: Prune hardy bushes in late winter or early spring. Use sharp tools to make clean cuts, which helps prevent disease. Pruning encourages new growth and maintains shape.
    • Fertilising: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced fertiliser. This supports healthy growth. Apply once a year, following the package instructions for quantity.
    • Watering: Water hardy bushes deeply once a week, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, it's time to water.
    • Dividing and Splitting: If necessary, divide hardy bushes every 3-5 years in early spring. This helps rejuvenate the plant and encourages more blooms.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from frost. This is crucial for bushes that overwinter.
    • Transplanting: Transplant hardy bushes in early spring. Water thoroughly after moving to reduce transplant shock.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding hardy flowering shrubs. These strong outdoor bushes are not only beautiful but also climate-tolerant, making them a great choice for any garden. To explore options, consider the opportunity to buy hardy bushes that suit your needs.
