Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Root type
Root type

A plant or tree can be delivered in a pot, with a root ball or with bare roots.

  • Pot: the advantage of plants grown in pots is that they can be planted all year round, with the exception of periods of frost. After planting, both the root system and the visible, above-ground parts of the plant/tree will continue to grow immediately, provided temperatures are high enough.
  • Root ball: plants and trees with (wired) root balls can be planted roughly between October and April, depending on the weather. During these months, the plants are dormant and at their least vulnerable, which is ideal for planting. Because the plants are freshly uprooted (dug up) at the growers, the root system may be somewhat damaged. Once planted, the plant/tree will first form new roots and will then continue to grow above ground.
  • Bare roots: plants and trees delivered with bare roots can be planted roughly between October and April, depending on the weather. During these months, the plants are dormant and at their least vulnerable, which is ideal for planting. Because the plants are freshly uprooted (dug up) at the growers, the root system may be somewhat damaged. Once planted, the plant/tree will first form new roots and will then continue to grow above ground. Because there is no sand on the roots, the plants are lightweight and therefore easy to carry.
Height at time of delivery (cm)

Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Width at time of delivery (cm)
Width at time of delivery (cm)

Our plants can be ordered in different sizes. By width on delivery (cm), we mean the approximate width of the plant in centimetres when we deliver it to you.

The number of centimetres indicated refers to the widest part of the plant. It may not be as wide in other places, since it is a natural product and does not have standard dimensions.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Application
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Understanding Deciduous Hedges

Deciduous hedge plants are a popular choice for creating seasonal hedges in gardens. These plants, such as Carpinus, Fagus, and Acer, are known for their ability to shed leaves in autumn, providing a beautiful display of colour. Often referred to as autumn hedges or bare winter hedges, they offer a natural hedge with seasonal change. Deciduous hedges are used in gardens for various purposes. They can serve as tall hedges or low hedges, acting as a boundary hedge or a border edge. These hedges are ideal for creating a garden boundary or a boundary with neighbours. They can also hide unsightly objects or block views, providing a temporary privacy hedge. In winter, these hedges become leafless, transforming into a bare winter hedge. Despite this, they remain a popular choice due to their fast-growing nature and the stunning autumn foliage they provide. Whether used as a leaf-dropping boundary or a hedge with autumn colour, deciduous hedge plants like Cornus and Berberis are perfect for those seeking a hedge with leaf fall and seasonal beauty.

Traits and cycle of bare winter hedge plants

Deciduous hedge plants, also known as leaf-shedding or seasonal hedges, are popular for their natural seasonal changes. These plants grow in various forms, from tall hedges to low hedges, making them suitable for different garden boundaries. They can spread widely, creating a dense boundary hedge that can hide unsightly objects or provide a temporary privacy hedge. The development of deciduous hedge plants begins in early spring when new leaves start to appear. By summer, these hedges are lush and full, providing a vibrant garden boundary. As autumn approaches, the leaves change colour, offering a stunning display. By winter, these hedges become leafless, creating a bare winter hedge that still serves as a boundary with neighbours. Deciduous hedges typically bloom in spring or early summer, depending on the climate and care. Factors like temperature, soil preparation, and plant age can influence the blooming period. Proper care ensures a healthy hedge with autumn colour. The bloom colours of deciduous hedge plants vary, influenced by the species, cultivar, and soil conditions. Light and climate also play a role in the intensity of the colours, making each hedge unique. While deciduous hedges are not known for their fragrance, some species may have a mild scent during blooming. The focus is more on their visual appeal and biodiversity benefits. Mature deciduous hedge plants can reach different heights, from low hedges to tall hedges, depending on the species and care. They are ideal for creating layered garden designs and can be combined with other plants for a diverse landscape. Consider the placement and maintenance to ensure a thriving hedge.

Deciduous hedge plants are a popular choice for creating seasonal hedges in gardens. These plants are known for their unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. The leaves can vary from oval to lobed, with colours ranging from vibrant greens in spring and summer to stunning reds, oranges, and yellows in autumn. The texture of the leaves can be smooth or slightly rough, depending on the species. In winter, deciduous hedges lose their leaves, leaving a bare winter hedge that still provides structure to the garden. The winter hardiness of deciduous hedge plants depends on several factors, including temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure. These plants are generally hardy, but extreme cold and prolonged frost can affect their health. Choosing the right species and ensuring good soil conditions can enhance their resilience. Deciduous hedges are not evergreen, meaning they shed their leaves annually. This leaf-shedding process is influenced by the plant species, climate, and garden location. In autumn, these hedges transform into a beautiful autumn hedge, adding seasonal interest to the garden. When it comes to heat and drought tolerance, deciduous hedge plants vary. Some species have deep root systems and waxy or hairy leaves that help them withstand dry conditions. However, regular watering and maintaining soil moisture are essential for their health during hot, dry periods. Deciduous hedge plants are generally safe for gardens with children and pets. While some plants may have mild toxicity, they are harmless with normal garden use. It's always wise to research specific species for any potential risks. These hedges play a vital role in supporting biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for wildlife, mimic natural habitats, and contribute to a balanced ecosystem. By choosing deciduous hedges, gardeners can enhance their garden's resistance to pests and diseases while enjoying a natural hedge with seasonal change.

Using seasonal hedges for colour and texture

Deciduous hedge plants are a great choice for adding seasonal interest to a garden. These plants, also known as leaf-shedding or seasonal hedges, offer a variety of applications in garden design. Here are some ways to use deciduous hedge plants effectively:

  • Border: Use deciduous hedges to create a natural border that changes with the seasons.
  • Group planting: Plant in groups for a stunning display of autumn colour.
  • Solitary: A single deciduous hedge plant can serve as a focal point in the garden.
  • Boundary hedge: Define the garden boundary with neighbours using these versatile plants.
  • Privacy screen: Use as a temporary privacy hedge that provides coverage in summer and opens up in winter.
  • Windbreak: Plant as a windscreen to protect more delicate plants.
  • Insect corner: Create a biodiversity zone that attracts beneficial insects.
Deciduous hedges not only provide seasonal colour but also help hide unsightly objects and create a natural look. When planning to buy deciduous hedge plants, consider options that offer the best autumn colour or fast-growing varieties. These hedges are perfect for those who appreciate the beauty of seasonal change in their garden.

Companion plants that work with autumn hedges

Deciduous hedge plants can be beautifully combined with various plant types to create a stunning garden. These seasonal hedges, known for their leaf-shedding nature, pair well with evergreen shrubs like boxwood or holly. These evergreens provide year-round structure and contrast with the bare winter hedge. For a splash of colour, consider planting perennials such as asters or sedums nearby. These plants offer vibrant blooms in autumn, complementing the best deciduous hedges for autumn colour. Grasses like miscanthus or pennisetum add texture and movement, enhancing the natural hedge with seasonal change. Fast-growing deciduous hedges can also be paired with climbers like clematis or honeysuckle, which add vertical interest and fragrance. This combination of deciduous hedge plants and companion species creates a dynamic garden boundary that changes with the seasons. These plant combinations are not only visually appealing but also practical. They provide a temporary privacy hedge during the growing season and allow light to penetrate in winter when the hedge goes bare. This balance of structure and seasonal interest makes deciduous hedges a versatile choice for any garden.

Best soil and aspect for deciduous hedge success

Deciduous hedge plants thrive in full sun to partial shade. Sunlight is crucial for their growth, but too much shade can hinder their development. Wind can affect these plants, so planting them in a sheltered spot or using windbreaks can help. The ideal soil for deciduous hedges is well-drained and fertile. Adding compost or organic matter can improve soil quality. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth. Soil moisture is important; too dry or too wet conditions can stress the plants. A balance is needed, considering factors like wind and sun exposure. Deciduous hedge plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Testing soil pH and adjusting with lime or sulphur can optimise conditions. These hedges, also known as leaf-shedding or seasonal hedges, provide seasonal interest with autumn colour and temporary privacy. They are perfect for creating a natural boundary or hiding unsightly objects. Whether tall or low, these hedges offer a dynamic garden feature with their seasonal changes.

When and how to plant seasonal hedging

Deciduous hedge plants are best planted in spring or autumn. These times offer ideal conditions for root establishment. However, potted plants can be planted year-round, except during frost. Bare-root or root-balled plants should be planted in spring or autumn for best results. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and space availability are crucial for successful planting.

Plant spacing for deciduous hedge plants depends on the species, initial size, and growth rate. Generally, smaller plants are spaced closer together, while larger ones need more room. The number of plants per metre is often listed on the product page, ensuring optimal growth and coverage.

Proper soil preparation is vital for deciduous hedges. The soil should be well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Loosen the soil to allow roots to spread easily. This encourages healthy growth and a robust hedge.

When planting deciduous hedge plants, dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Place the plant at the same depth it was in the pot. Water thoroughly after planting to help the roots settle. Regular watering is essential, especially in dry periods, to maintain healthy growth.

Maintenance Tips for Deciduous Hedge

Deciduous hedge plants, also known as leaf-shedding or seasonal hedges, require specific care to thrive. Here are some essential tips for maintaining these plants:

  • Watering: Deciduous hedge plants need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by inserting a finger into the soil; if it feels dry, it's time to water.
  • Pruning: Prune deciduous hedges in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Use sharp tools to remove dead or overgrown branches, promoting healthy growth and maintaining shape.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage robust growth. Follow the package instructions for the correct amount and frequency.
  • Dividing: If necessary, divide and replant hedge sections every few years to prevent overcrowding and promote healthy growth.
  • Winter Protection: Protect young or newly planted hedges with mulch to insulate roots during cold months.
  • Transplanting: If relocating, do so in early spring or autumn. Water thoroughly after transplanting to help establish roots.
Deciduous hedges offer seasonal beauty and privacy. For those looking to enhance their garden boundary, consider the option to buy deciduous hedge plants. These hedges provide a natural boundary with neighbours and can hide unsightly objects while offering a hedge with autumn colour.

Visual interest of hedges that change through seasons

Deciduous hedge plants offer a unique charm to any garden. These plants are known for their seasonal changes, providing a dynamic visual interest. In spring and summer, they boast lush green leaves, creating a vibrant boundary hedge. As autumn approaches, these hedges transform, displaying stunning autumn colours. This seasonal hedge becomes a focal point with its rich hues of red, orange, and yellow, making it one of the best deciduous hedges for autumn colour.

During winter, deciduous hedges shed their leaves, revealing a bare winter hedge. This leafless hedge in winter adds a different texture to the garden, allowing for a clear view of the landscape. Despite being a non-evergreen hedge, it serves as a natural hedge with seasonal change, offering temporary privacy and a boundary with neighbours.

Deciduous hedge plants are also beneficial for wildlife. They provide shelter and food for birds and insects, making them a valuable addition to any garden. These hedges can be tall hedges or low hedges, suitable for various garden boundaries. For those looking to hide unsightly objects or create a block hedge, deciduous hedges are an excellent choice. Consider adding these versatile plants to enhance the beauty and functionality of your garden.
