Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Key characteristics of low-growing garden plants

Ground covers, also known as ground-hugging plants or low-growing garden plants, are essential for any garden. These plants spread across the soil, creating a lush carpet that prevents weeds. They grow in various forms, from creeping to spreading plants, and can cover large areas efficiently. Ground covers develop from small seedlings to mature plants over time. They start by establishing roots, then gradually spread outwards. The best ground cover plants for UK gardens are those that adapt well to local conditions. The blooming period of ground covers varies. Some bloom in spring, while others flower in summer. Factors like climate, temperature, and soil preparation influence their flowering time. Proper care and maintenance ensure vibrant blooms. The colours of ground cover flowers range widely, depending on the species and cultivar. Soil quality, light exposure, and climate also affect their hues. With the right care, these plants can add a splash of colour to any garden. Ground covers are not typically known for their scent. However, some varieties may have fragrant leaves or flowers. The intensity of the scent can vary based on the plant's age and environmental conditions. Mature ground covers can reach different heights, usually staying low to the ground. Their height depends on the species and care they receive. Choosing the right location and combining them with other plants can enhance garden aesthetics. For those looking to evergreen ground covers, these plants offer a practical solution for weed prevention and garden beautification.

Ground covers are essential for any garden, offering a lush, green carpet that enhances the landscape. These low-growing plants, also known as creeping plants or carpet plants, come in various shapes and colours. The leaves of ground covers can be round, oval, or even heart-shaped, with shades ranging from deep green to variegated patterns. The texture varies from smooth to fuzzy, depending on the species. Some ground covers retain their leaves in winter, while others shed them, influenced by the plant type and climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is crucial for ground covers, especially in colder regions. Factors like temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure affect their survival. Choosing the right species and ensuring proper soil conditions can enhance their resilience. Many ground covers are evergreen, maintaining their foliage year-round, while others are deciduous, losing leaves in colder months. This depends on the plant variety and the garden's location.

Heat and drought tolerance are vital for ground covers, particularly in warmer climates. Origin, leaf structure, and root depth play roles in their ability to withstand dry conditions. Some have a waxy coating or fine hairs that help retain moisture. Ground covers are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. They are harmless when used normally in gardens.

Ground covers contribute significantly to biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for insects and small animals, supporting a balanced ecosystem. By mimicking natural habitats, these plants enhance garden resilience against pests. For those looking to add beautiful ground covers to their garden, they offer an excellent solution for weed prevention and aesthetic appeal.

Top companion plants for ground cover borders

Ground covers are a great way to fill spaces in the garden. They can be combined with various plant types to create a beautiful landscape. Low-growing plants like ferns and hostas work well with ground covers. These plants add texture and height, making the garden more interesting. Spreading plants such as ajuga and creeping thyme are also excellent choices. They blend well with ground covers, creating a seamless carpet effect.

For a stunning combination, consider pairing ground covers with ornamental grasses. The contrast between the soft carpet plants and the tall, swaying grasses is visually appealing. Another option is to mix ground covers with flowering perennials like geraniums or sedums. These plants provide colour and attract pollinators, enhancing the garden's biodiversity.

Combining ground covers with these plants is beneficial because it helps with weed prevention. The dense growth of ground-covering plants suppresses weeds, reducing maintenance. Additionally, these combinations create a lush, full garden look without much effort. For those looking for Strong ground covers, these options offer both beauty and practicality. Choosing the best ground cover plants for UK gardens ensures a vibrant and low-maintenance garden space.

Ideal locations and soil types for spreading success

Ground covers, also known as ground-hugging plants or low-growing garden plants, thrive in various light conditions. They prefer full sun to partial shade, depending on the specific type. Factors like the amount of sunlight and surrounding structures can affect their growth. These plants are generally not wind-sensitive, but in exposed areas, a windbreak can help protect them. The ideal soil for ground covers is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they allow roots to spread easily. Regular fertilisation and a well-drained soil enhance their growth. Ground covers need consistent moisture, but the soil should not be waterlogged. Wind and sun exposure can dry out the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Ground covers prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can improve plant health. These plants are excellent for weed prevention, as they form a dense mat that suppresses unwanted growth. For more options, explore Hardy ground covers to find the perfect fit for any garden.

When and how to plant ground cover effectively

Ground covers are versatile plants that can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with roots or clumps, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The distance between ground covers depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the Heijnen product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for ground covers. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Planting instructions for ground covers include digging a hole twice the size of the root ball, placing the plant, and filling it with soil. Watering is essential after planting to help the roots establish. For Ground covers for partial shade, consider the light conditions. Ground covers like creeping plants and carpet plants are excellent for weed prevention and creating a lush garden. These low-growing plants spread quickly, providing a beautiful and functional garden ground cover.

Caring for Garden Ground Cover

  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth. Use sparingly to avoid over-fertilisation.

Frequently Asked Questions Ground covers

What function can ground cover plants have in a garden?

Ground cover plants serve multiple functions within a garden. They can suppress weeds by forming a dense mat that inhibits unwanted growth. Ground covers also protect soil from erosion, retain moisture, and provide a living mulch that enriches the soil structure. Aesthetically, they offer a cohesive look, cover bare spots, and can create a backdrop that highlights other garden features. Their low-growing nature makes them ideal for use in both formal and informal garden designs.

Which is the best period for transplanting ground cover plants?

The ideal timing for transplanting ground cover plants is during their dormant phase in early spring or late autumn. This allows the plants to establish their root system in the new location without the stress of active growth or extreme weather. Transplanting during cooler days with overcast skies can also reduce the risk of transplant shock, ensuring a successful relocation and adaptation of these versatile garden elements that Heijnen Plants provides.

Which plants can be combined well with ground cover plants?

Ground cover plants pair splendidly with a myriad of other plant types. They are often used alongside border plants to create a seamless garden design. For ecological gardens, combining them with bee-friendly plants and butterfly-friendly plants enhances biodiversity. They also complement ornamental grasses and perennials, adding a lush undergrowth. For structured landscapes, pairing ground covers with shrubs and bushes can provide a balanced aesthetic and low-maintenance appeal.

In which soil type do most ground cover plants grow well?

Ground cover plants are generally adaptable and can thrive in a range of soil types. However, well-drained soils are typically preferred to prevent root rot and other moisture-related issues. Some varieties, such as Vinca or Hedera, are quite tolerant of varying soil conditions, including clay, loam, or sandy soils. Heijnen Plants advises on the best soil conditions for each variety to ensure optimal growth and coverage in your garden setting.

What popular types of ground cover plants are there?

Among the popular varieties of ground cover plants, Heijnen Plants offers the evergreen allure of Lamium maculatum 'White Nancy' and the robust Ajuga reptans 'Catlin's Giant'. Hedera varieties such as Hedera hibernica and Hedera helix 'Plattensee' serve well in shady areas. For color, consider Vinca minor 'Illumination' and 'Atropurpurea', while for texture, Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald 'n Gold' is an excellent choice. Armeria maritima 'Splendens' and Omphalodes verna add delicate blooms to the mix.

In what period can I best plant ground cover plants?

The optimal planting period for ground cover plants is generally in the spring or autumn. These seasons provide moderate temperatures and sufficient rainfall, which are conducive to root development. Planting during these times allows the ground cover to establish itself before the stress of the summer heat or winter cold. Heijnen Plants ensures that these plants have a strong root system, allowing them to be planted throughout the year, provided the ground is not frozen.
