Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

USDA Hardness zones in °C

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

    Features of blue-toned balcony blooms

Blue flowering patio and balcony plants are perfect for adding a touch of colour to small spaces. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading out to fill containers or hanging baskets. They can be compact or trailing, making them versatile for different balcony settings. The development of blue flowering terrace and balcony plants begins in early spring. They start as small shoots and gradually grow into lush plants by summer. The growth rate depends on factors like sunlight, water, and soil quality. These plants typically bloom from late spring to early autumn. The exact blooming months can vary based on climate, temperature, and care. Warmer climates may see earlier blooms, while cooler areas might experience later flowering. The blooms come in a range of blue shades, including indigo blue, cobalt blue, and lavender blue. The colour intensity can be influenced by the plant variety, soil pH, and light exposure. Some blue flowering balcony plants are known for their fragrance. The scent can vary from subtle to strong, depending on the species and growing conditions. This adds an extra sensory dimension to a garden with blue colour accents. Mature blue flowering patio and balcony plants can reach different heights, often between 30 to 60 cm. The height can be affected by the plant's location, care, and combination with other plants. These plants are ideal for creating ocean blue borders and gardens. For those looking to enhance their outdoor space, consider the option to buy blue flowering patio and balcony plants to enjoy their beauty and charm.

Blue flowering patio and balcony plants are a delightful addition to any garden. Their leaves can vary in shape, colour, and texture. Some have oval leaves, while others might be more elongated. The colour ranges from deep green to a lighter shade, depending on the species. The texture can be smooth or slightly hairy, which helps in retaining moisture. These plants may lose their leaves in winter, but many are evergreen, providing year-round interest. Factors like species choice and climate influence this characteristic.

When it comes to winter hardiness, blue flowering terrace and balcony plants can be sensitive to frost. The temperature, duration of frost, and wind exposure play significant roles. A sheltered spot with well-drained soil can enhance their resilience. Some species are more frost-tolerant than others, so choosing the right type is crucial.

These plants are often evergreen, maintaining their foliage throughout the year. However, some may shed leaves annually, influenced by species and climate. A sunny, protected location can help them thrive.

Heat and drought resistance are important for blue balcony flowers. Originating from various climates, their leaf structure, waxy coating, or hairiness can aid in water retention. A deep root system also helps them access moisture during dry spells. Adequate soil moisture and protection from strong winds are beneficial.

Regarding toxicity, blue-coloured outdoor plants are generally safe for gardens. They pose no threat to children or pets when used normally. It's always wise to supervise young ones and pets around any plants.

Blue flowering gardens support biodiversity by attracting pollinators. Their long blooming period and insect-friendly nature make them valuable. Mimicking natural habitats can enhance garden ecosystems, providing food and shelter for wildlife. This balance strengthens gardens against diseases and pests, creating a vibrant, healthy environment.

Companion ideas for cool-toned outdoor plants

Blue flowering patio and balcony plants can create a stunning display when combined with other plant types. Consider pairing them with silver-leaved plants like Artemisia or Lamb's Ear. These plants enhance the blue tones and add texture to the garden. For a vibrant contrast, mix blue flowering terrace and balcony plants with yellow or orange blooms, such as Marigolds or Nasturtiums. This combination creates a lively and eye-catching display. Another beautiful pairing is with white flowering plants like Alyssum or Snow-in-Summer. The white flowers highlight the blue balcony flowers, making them stand out even more. For a more subtle look, combine blue-toned terrace flowers with pastel pinks or purples, such as Lavender or Pink Dianthus. This creates a soft and harmonious garden with blue colour accents. These combinations work well because they balance colour and texture, creating a visually appealing garden. Blue-coloured outdoor plants bring a sense of calm and serenity, while contrasting colours add excitement. Whether using indigo blue, cobalt blue, or light blue, these plants can transform small spaces into beautiful blue flowering gardens.

Soil, light and pot tips for healthy blue blooms

Blue flowering patio and balcony plants thrive in full sun to partial shade. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily, but some afternoon shade can help in hot climates. Wind can affect these plants, so placing them near a wall or using windbreaks can protect them. The ideal soil for blue flowering terrace and balcony plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality and ensure nutrients are available. Regular fertilisation supports growth and vibrant blooms. Soil moisture is crucial for these plants. They prefer consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so regular watering is essential, especially in pots. These plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Testing the soil can help adjust pH if needed, ensuring optimal growth. Incorporating blue balcony flowers can add stunning colour accents to any garden, with shades like indigo blue, cobalt blue, and lavender blue enhancing the space. These azure balcony blooms are perfect for creating a garden with blue colour accents, whether in borders or pots.

Planting and spacing blue terrace flowers

Blue flowering patio and balcony plants can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For plants with roots or clumps, it's best to plant them in spring or autumn. The planting distance for blue balcony flowers depends on the plant type, size at planting, and growth speed. It's important to check the specific plant properties on the Heijnen product page for the number of plants per metre or square metre. Proper soil preparation is crucial for blue flowering terrace and balcony plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost to support healthy growth. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil moist. This care will help create a vibrant garden with blue colour accents, featuring shades like indigo blue, cobalt blue, and lavender blue.

Maintenance for Steady Colour in Blue Flowering Patio and Balcony Plants

Blue flowering patio and balcony plants bring a touch of elegance to any outdoor space. Proper care ensures these sky-blue patio flowers thrive. Regular maintenance includes:

    • Watering: Check soil moisture regularly. Water when the top inch feels dry. Early morning is ideal to prevent evaporation.
    • Pruning: Trim dead or overgrown branches in early spring. This encourages new growth and maintains shape.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and mid-summer. Follow package instructions for quantity.
    • Dividing: If plants become crowded, divide them every 2-3 years in early spring. This promotes healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: Cover plants with mulch or bring pots indoors during frost to protect roots.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring. Water thoroughly after moving to reduce transplant shock.

These steps help maintain vibrant azure balcony blooms, creating stunning blue flowering gardens.
