Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    Buy evergreen shrubs

Evergreen bushes are a wonderful addition to any garden, providing year-round beauty and low upkeep. These year-round green ornamental bushes, also known as non-deciduous garden bushes, keep their leaves throughout the seasons. Imagine a garden that remains vibrant and lush, even in the colder months. The secret lies in choosing the right shrubs, such as shrubs with persistent foliage. These evergreen year-round shrubs not only enhance the garden's appearance but also require minimal maintenance. Discover the charm of leaf-retaining bushes and enjoy a garden that stays leafy all year long.

    What are Evergreen Bushes?

Evergreen bushes are plants that keep their leaves all year round. Unlike deciduous plants, these bushes do not shed their leaves in winter. This makes them perfect for adding structure to a garden. Evergreen bushes, also known as all-season green bushes or winter-hardy bushes, provide a constant green backdrop. They are often used in gardens for their ability to stay leafy and maintain a lush appearance throughout the year. These bushes are versatile and can be used in various ways in the garden. They are ideal for creating hedges, providing privacy, and adding texture. Some popular types include Buxus, Ilex, Skimmia, Prunus, and Viburnum. These shrubs are not only low-maintenance but also offer year-round interest. Evergreen flowering shrubs, such as those that bloom throughout the year, can add colour and vibrancy to any garden. Choosing evergreen garden shrubs ensures a garden remains attractive and lively, even in the colder months.

Traits of winter-hardy and all-season shrubs

Evergreen bushes, also known as year-round green ornamental bushes or non-deciduous garden bushes, are a popular choice for gardens. These shrubs are known for their ability to retain leaves throughout the year, providing structure and greenery even in winter. They typically grow in a compact form, spreading outwards to create a dense appearance. The width and spread can vary depending on the species, but they generally maintain a balanced shape. The development of evergreen bushes begins with new shoots in spring, gradually maturing into a full, leafy shrub. As they grow, these shrubs maintain their foliage, offering a consistent look. The growth rate can be influenced by factors such as soil quality, sunlight, and regular care. Evergreen flowering shrubs bloom at different times, depending on the species. Some may flower in early spring, while others bloom in summer or autumn. Climate, weather conditions, and the age of the plant can affect the blooming period. Proper soil preparation and care are essential for optimal flowering. The bloom colours of evergreen bushes can range from white and pink to vibrant reds and yellows. The specific colour depends on the type and cultivar, as well as soil conditions and light exposure. Regular maintenance and the right climate can enhance the vibrancy of the blooms. While not all evergreen bushes are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a pleasant fragrance. This can be influenced by the type of shrub, the health of the plant, and environmental factors. The scent can add an extra dimension to a garden, attracting pollinators and enhancing biodiversity. Mature evergreen bushes can reach varying heights, often between 1 to 3 metres. The final height depends on the species, care, and placement in the garden. These shrubs are ideal for creating layers and visual interest, making them a versatile choice for any garden setting.

Evergreen bushes are a popular choice for gardens due to their year-round appeal. The leaves of these all-season green bushes vary in shape, colour, and texture. They can be oval, lance-shaped, or even needle-like, with shades ranging from deep green to bluish hues. The texture can be smooth, glossy, or even slightly hairy, depending on the species. These shrubs are known for retaining their leaves throughout the winter, providing structure and greenery when other plants may be bare. Winter-hardy bushes are well-suited to withstand cold temperatures. Factors such as the duration of frost, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a role in their frost resistance. Choosing the right type of evergreen flowering shrubs for structure can ensure they thrive even in harsh winters. These shrubs are typically evergreen, meaning they keep their leaves all year round. This characteristic is influenced by the species, climate, and location within the garden. In milder climates, they maintain their foliage more easily, contributing to a low-maintenance evergreen garden. Evergreen bushes are also known for their heat and drought tolerance. Originating from various climates, they often have adaptations like a waxy leaf coating or deep root systems to conserve moisture. This makes them ideal for gardens with varying water availability. In terms of safety, evergreen bushes are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for wildlife, supporting a balanced ecosystem. These shrubs with persistent foliage are a valuable addition to any garden, enhancing its resilience and beauty.

Best ways to use evergreen bushes in garden structure

Evergreen bushes, also known as year-round green ornamental bushes or non-deciduous garden bushes, are perfect for adding structure to any garden. These shrubs keep their leaves throughout the year, providing constant greenery and beauty. Here are some ways to use evergreen bushes in your garden:

    • Border: Use evergreen bushes to create a neat and tidy border around your garden. They define spaces and add a touch of elegance.
    • Hedge or boundary: Plant these shrubs as a hedge to create privacy and a natural boundary. They act as a windscreen and a sightline breaker.
    • Group planting: For a lush look, plant evergreen bushes in groups. This creates a dense, green area that is visually appealing.
    • Pot or planter: Place evergreen bushes in pots or planters for a versatile and mobile garden feature. They are ideal for patios and balconies.
    • Underplanting: Use these bushes as underplanting for taller trees, adding depth and layers to your garden design.

Consider evergreen flowering shrubs for year-round blooms and beauty. These low-maintenance evergreen garden plants are perfect for those who want a garden that stays leafy and vibrant all year. When planning your garden, remember to buy evergreen bushes to ensure a lasting and beautiful landscape.

    Pairing evergreens with seasonal bloomers

Evergreen bushes are a great choice for any garden. They can be combined with various plant types to create a beautiful landscape. Pairing evergreen bushes with seasonal bloomers like azaleas or camellias can add vibrant colours throughout the year. These all-season green bushes provide a constant backdrop, allowing the seasonal flowers to shine. For a unique combination, consider mixing evergreen flowering shrubs with grasses like Miscanthus or Pennisetum. These grasses add texture and movement, complementing the structure of evergreen bushes. Another option is to plant winter-hardy bushes alongside perennials such as Echinacea or Rudbeckia. This mix ensures that the garden remains lively and interesting, even in colder months. The combination of evergreen bushes with these plants is beneficial because it offers year-round interest. Evergreen year-round shrubs maintain their leaves, providing structure and greenery even in winter. This makes them ideal for low-maintenance gardens. Additionally, shrubs with persistent foliage help create a balanced look, ensuring the garden is never bare. By choosing shrubs that stay leafy, the garden remains lush and inviting all year long.

Ideal site and soil for all-year green

Evergreen bushes thrive in various light conditions, but most prefer full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth and flowering. Too much shade can reduce blooms, while too much sun can dry the soil quickly. Evergreen bushes are generally wind-resistant, but strong winds can cause damage. Planting them near a fence or wall can provide protection. The ideal soil for evergreen bushes is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation helps maintain healthy growth. Evergreen bushes need consistent soil moisture. Wind and sun can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. These bushes prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can improve growth. Evergreen bushes, also known as year-round green ornamental bushes or non-deciduous garden bushes, are perfect for adding constant greenery to a garden. They are shrubs with persistent foliage, providing a lush look throughout the year. Evergreen flowering shrubs are a great choice for any garden, offering beauty and structure.

    Planting Tips for Evergreen Varieties

Evergreen bushes can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls, the best time is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The distance between evergreen bushes depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for evergreen bushes. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the bush in the hole, fill with soil, and water thoroughly. After planting, regular watering is essential, especially in dry periods, to help the bushes establish. Evergreen bushes, also known as all-season green bushes or winter-hardy bushes, are ideal for creating a lush garden. These shrubs with persistent foliage, such as evergreen flowering shrubs, provide year-round greenery. They are perfect for those seeking shrubs that keep their leaves and stay leafy throughout the seasons.

    Maintenance for Evergreen Bushes

Evergreen bushes, also known as year-round green ornamental bushes, are a great addition to any garden. These non-deciduous garden bushes require specific care to thrive.

    • Watering: Evergreen bushes need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching the top layer. If it feels dry, water the plant thoroughly.
    • Pruning: Prune evergreen bushes in late winter or early spring. This helps maintain their shape and encourages new growth. Use sharp pruning shears for clean cuts.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. This provides essential nutrients for growth. Follow the package instructions for the correct amount.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, protect evergreen bushes with mulch to insulate the roots. This helps them survive harsh winters.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant evergreen bushes in early spring. Water them well after moving to reduce transplant shock.
Evergreen bushes, or shrubs with persistent foliage, are perfect for creating a lush garden. Consider adding these shrubs that keep their leaves to enjoy greenery all year. For those looking to enhance their garden, it's a good idea to buy evergreen bushes for a vibrant landscape.
