Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Characteristics of speedy and vigorous climbers

Fast-growing climbers, also known as rapid-climbing plants or quick-covering wall plants, are perfect for those looking to add greenery quickly. These plants spread rapidly, making them ideal for covering fences or walls. They grow in various forms, often reaching impressive widths and heights, providing excellent coverage. The development of fast-growing climbers is fascinating. From the moment they sprout, these plants grow quickly, reaching maturity in just one season. This rapid growth makes them popular for creating privacy screens or lush garden backdrops. The blooming months for these climbers vary, often influenced by climate and weather conditions. Typically, they bloom in spring or summer, depending on the temperature and care they receive. Proper soil preparation and regular maintenance can enhance their blooming potential. The bloom colours of fast-growing climbers are diverse, ranging from vibrant reds to soft pastels. Factors like species, soil quality, and sunlight exposure can affect the intensity and shade of the blooms. Regular care ensures the best display of colours. Some fast-growing climbers are known for their fragrance, adding an aromatic element to gardens. The scent can vary in intensity, influenced by the plant's age and health. These fragrant climbers are a delight for both gardeners and pollinators. Mature fast-growing climbers can reach impressive heights, often several metres tall. Their height and spread depend on the planting location and care. They are excellent for creating layered garden designs and can be combined with other plants for a stunning effect.

Fast-growing climbers are perfect for those looking to quickly cover fences or create privacy screens. These speedy vertical climbers, also known as rapid spreaders, have a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be heart-shaped, oval, or even lobed, with shades ranging from deep green to variegated patterns. The texture can vary from smooth to slightly hairy, which can affect how they handle different weather conditions. Some fast-growing climbing plants are evergreen, keeping their leaves year-round, while others shed leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate.

Winter hardiness is crucial for fast-growing climbers. Factors like temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure play a role. Some rapid climbers can withstand cold temperatures, while others may need protection. Soil conditions also impact their ability to survive frost. In terms of heat and drought resistance, many quick cover climbers have adaptations like deep root systems or waxy leaves to conserve water. Originating from warmer climates, these plants often thrive in dry conditions.

When considering safety, fast-growing climbing plants are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and birds. These climbing plants for fast coverage can mimic natural habitats, supporting ecosystem balance and increasing garden resilience against pests. By choosing the fastest climbing plants for fences, gardeners can enjoy a lush, vibrant garden while supporting local wildlife.

Best companion plants for quick climbers

Fast-growing climbers, also known as speedy vertical climbers or rapid spreaders, can transform a garden quickly. These vigorous climbers are perfect for creating privacy or covering unsightly fences. Combining fast-growing climbing plants with other plant types can enhance the garden's beauty and functionality. For instance, pairing them with ornamental grasses can add texture and movement. Grasses like Miscanthus or Pennisetum work well with quick cover climbers, providing a soft contrast to the vertical growth of the climbers.

Another excellent combination is with perennials such as Echinacea or Rudbeckia. These plants offer vibrant colours and attract pollinators, complementing the lush greenery of rapid climbers. For a more exotic look, consider mixing fast-growing climbing plants with bamboo. The tall, slender bamboo stalks create a striking backdrop for the exuberant growers.

These combinations are not only visually appealing but also practical. Fast-growing climbing plants provide quick coverage, while their companions add depth and interest. This mix ensures a dynamic and thriving garden space. Whether using ultra-fast-growing climbers for privacy in one season or quick-growing vines for screens, these plant pairings offer endless possibilities for garden design.

Soil and support needs for fast growth

Fast-growing climbers thrive in full sun to partial shade. Sunlight is crucial for their rapid growth, but some can tolerate a bit of shade. Wind can be a challenge for these rapid-climbing plants. To protect them, consider planting near a sturdy structure or using windbreaks. The ideal soil for quick-covering wall plants is well-drained and rich in nutrients. Regular fertilisation helps these rapid spreaders grow vigorously. Moisture levels are important; ensure the soil is consistently moist but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. Fast-growing climbing plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Testing the soil can ensure the right conditions for these quick façade growers. With the right care, these climbing plants for fast coverage can transform a garden quickly.

When and how to plant rapid climbers

Fast-growing climbers are ideal for quickly covering walls or fences. These speedy vertical climbers can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and space should be considered. Planting distance is crucial for rapid spreaders. The type of plant, its initial size, and growth rate affect spacing. Typically, the number of plants per metre is listed on the product page. Proper soil preparation is key for fast-growing climbing plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant at the same depth as in the pot. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells. These quick cover climbers need consistent moisture to establish well. With the right care, these vigorous climbers will transform your garden into a lush haven in no time.

    Maintenance for Fast Growing Climbers

Fast-growing climbers, also known as rapid-climbing plants or quick-covering wall plants, are perfect for adding greenery quickly. Proper care ensures healthy growth and coverage.

    • Watering: Fast-growing climbing plants need regular watering, especially in dry periods. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer. Water deeply when dry.
    • Pruning: Prune vigorous climbers in late winter or early spring. This encourages new growth and keeps plants tidy. Use sharp tools for clean cuts.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support growth. Repeat every 4-6 weeks during the growing season for best results.
    • Dividing: If applicable, divide exuberant growers every few years in early spring. This helps manage size and promotes healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: Some fast-growing evergreen climbers need protection in harsh winters. Mulch around the base to insulate roots.
    • Transplanting: Transplant ultra-fast-growing climbers in early spring. Water well after moving and provide extra care until established.

What function can fast-growing climbing plants have in a garden?

Climbing plants serve multiple functions in a garden; they can provide vertical interest, create natural screens for privacy, add height to border plantings, and can be trained over structures such as arbors and pergolas to create living, green architecture that enhances the overall aesthetic of the garden space.

Which is the best period for transplanting fast-growing climbing plants?

The best period for transplanting climbing plants is during their dormancy in late autumn or early spring. This timing minimizes stress on the plants and allows them to establish in their new location before the growing season begins, ensuring a robust and healthy growth.

Which plants can be combined well with fast-growing climbing plants?

Climbing plants can be beautifully paired with shrubs and ornamental grasses which provide contrasting forms and textures. They also coexist well with perennials that can fill in the base, and bee-friendly plants that enhance the garden's attractiveness to pollinators, creating a lively and beneficial ecosystem.

In which soil type do most fast-growing climbing plants grow well?

Most climbing plants, such as those offered by Heijnen Plants, adapt well to a variety of soil types. They typically prefer well-draining soil rich in organic matter. It is important to ensure that the soil is not waterlogged, as this can lead to root rot and hinder growth.

Popular varieties of fast-growing climbing plants include Wisteria sinensis 'Prolific', known for its stunning cascades of blue-violet flowers, and Campsis radicans 'Flava', which boasts striking yellow trumpet-shaped blooms. The optimal time to plant fast-growing climbing plants is in the autumn or spring when the weather is mild.
