Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Mature height (cm)

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application

Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Show more
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Their elegant foliage creates a serene atmosphere, making them perfect for a woodland garden. With a variety of perennial fern varieties available, they offer diverse foliage textures that enhance the beauty of any garden. Discover how these classic ferns can transform your garden into a tranquil retreat. Consider adding a garden plant to your collection for a touch of nature's elegance.

What are ferns and where do they thrive?

Ferns are ancient plants known for their lush, green fronds. They thrive in shady and moist environments, making them ideal for woodland gardens. Ferns, such as Dryopteris and Athyrium, are popular for their elegant foliage and ability to add texture to any garden. These foliage ferns are often used as shade plants, providing a lush backdrop in areas where other plants may struggle. Moisture-loving ferns like Polystichum and Asplenium are perfect for gardens with damp soil, offering easy-care options for gardeners. Classic ferns are also known as leafy shade plants, and they can be a great addition to green borders. For those looking to create a tropical-looking garden, ferns can provide that exotic feel. Woodland garden ferns, such as Blechnum, are perennial fern varieties that return year after year, adding consistent beauty to the landscape. Consider adding evergreen ferns to maintain greenery throughout the year. Whether used as foliage texture plants or fern-like garden plants, ferns are versatile and enhance any garden space.

Key traits of foliage ferns for garden texture

Ferns, also known as shade-loving ferns or woodland ferns, are popular for their elegant foliage and ability to thrive in shady areas. These shade plants have a unique growth pattern, with fronds unfurling in a spiral from the centre. Ferns can spread widely, creating a lush, green carpet in woodland gardens. Ferns develop from small fiddleheads in spring, gradually unfurling into full fronds. They reach maturity by summer, providing a rich texture to the garden. The best ferns for shady gardens are those that adapt well to moist soil, making them easy-care ferns for moist soil conditions. Ferns typically bloom in the warmer months, although they do not produce flowers like other plants. Instead, their beauty lies in their foliage. Climate, temperature, and soil conditions all influence their growth. Proper care and ground preparation are essential for their development. The colour of ferns is predominantly green, but the shade can vary depending on the species and environmental factors. Light, soil type, and care can affect the vibrancy of their foliage. Some ferns may have a slight scent, but they are not known for their fragrance. The scent, if present, is usually subtle and comes from the leaves. Ferns can grow to various heights, depending on the species. They are ideal for creating layers in a garden, adding depth and interest. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care will ensure they thrive. For those looking to hardy ferns, consider their placement in the garden to enhance the overall design.

Ferns are known for their elegant foliage and are a popular choice for shady gardens. The leaves of ferns, also known as fronds, come in various shapes and sizes. They can be delicate and feathery or broad and leathery, often with a rich green colour. The texture of fern leaves can vary from smooth to slightly hairy, depending on the species. Most ferns are deciduous, meaning they lose their leaves in winter, but some, like the evergreen ferns, retain their foliage year-round. Factors such as species and climate influence whether a fern is evergreen or deciduous.

Ferns are generally hardy plants, but their winter hardiness can vary. They thrive in temperatures above freezing and can tolerate light frost. However, prolonged periods of severe frost can damage them. The choice of fern species, soil conditions, and protection from wind are crucial for their survival in colder climates. Ferns are also known for their heat and drought tolerance. Originating from moist, shaded environments, they prefer consistent moisture but can withstand short dry spells. Their deep root systems and sometimes waxy or hairy leaves help them retain moisture.

Ferns are non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for various insects and small animals. Ferns can enhance the ecosystem by mimicking natural habitats and supporting the balance of garden ecosystems. They are excellent for creating a woodland garden feel and can be combined with other shade plants for a lush, green border. For those interested in partial shade ferns, consider exploring partial shade ferns for more options.

Where to use ferns for soft, layered greenery

Ferns are perfect for adding a touch of elegance to any garden. These shade-loving ferns thrive in areas with limited sunlight, making them ideal for creating a lush, woodland garden. Here are some ways to use ferns in the garden:

  • Use ferns in borders to create a soft, green edge.
  • Plant ferns in groups for a natural, woodland effect.
  • Ferns can be used as a solitary plant to draw attention to their elegant foliage.
  • Create a privacy screen with ferns as a natural barrier.
  • Ferns are excellent for underplanting beneath trees or larger shrubs.
  • Use ferns in pots or planters to add greenery to patios or balconies.
  • Ferns make great ground cover, especially in shady areas.
  • Incorporate ferns into a Shade ferns section for a diverse plant collection.

These classic ferns are not only beautiful but also easy to care for, making them a popular choice for gardeners. Consider adding ferns to your garden for their elegant foliage and ability to thrive in shady spots.

Best plants to pair with ferns in moist shade

Ferns are versatile plants that thrive in shady gardens. They can be beautifully combined with other shade-loving plants to create a lush and vibrant garden. Pairing ferns with hostas is a great choice, as their large leaves contrast nicely with the delicate fronds of ferns. Astilbes are another excellent option, adding a splash of colour with their feathery flowers. For a more textured look, consider combining ferns with heucheras, which offer a variety of leaf colours and patterns. These combinations work well because ferns, especially foliage ferns and moisture-loving ferns, prefer similar growing conditions. They thrive in moist, well-drained soil and enjoy the dappled light found in woodland gardens. The elegant foliage of ferns complements the bold leaves of hostas and the airy blooms of astilbes, creating a balanced and harmonious look. Additionally, these plants are easy to care for, making them ideal for gardeners seeking low-maintenance options. Incorporating ferns into a garden not only adds texture and interest but also enhances the overall aesthetic with their classic and tropical-looking appeal. Whether used in green borders or as part of a woodland garden, ferns are a timeless choice for any shady spot.

Ideal soil, moisture and light conditions

Ferns, known for their elegant foliage, thrive in shaded areas. These shade-loving ferns prefer indirect sunlight, making them perfect for woodland gardens. Too much direct sun can harm their delicate leaves. Wind can be a concern for ferns, as it may dry out the leaves. Planting them in sheltered spots or using windbreaks can help protect them. Ferns flourish in well-draining soil rich in organic matter. A mix of loam and peat is ideal, as it retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Regular fertilisation supports their growth, ensuring lush, green foliage. Moisture is crucial for ferns; they need consistently damp soil. Factors like wind and sun exposure can affect soil moisture, so regular watering is essential, especially in dry periods. The pH preference for ferns is slightly acidic to neutral. A pH range of 5.5 to 7.0 is suitable, as it allows for optimal nutrient absorption. Adjusting soil pH with amendments like lime or sulphur can help maintain the right balance. With the right conditions, ferns can be a stunning addition to any garden, offering a tropical look with their classic, leafy appearance.

When and how to plant ferns

Ferns are versatile plants that can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and moisture levels are crucial. Ferns thrive in shaded areas, making them perfect shade plants for a woodland garden. When planting ferns, consider the plant type, size, and growth rate. The number of ferns per metre depends on these factors. Information on the number of plants per metre is available on the Heijnen product page. Proper soil preparation is essential for ferns. Ensure the soil is well-drained and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality, providing the nutrients ferns need. For planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the fern in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain moisture, especially for moisture-loving ferns. Regular watering is vital, particularly in dry periods, to keep the foliage lush and healthy.

Maintenance for Healthy Ferns

Ferns, known for their elegant foliage, thrive in shaded areas. Proper care ensures their lush growth.

  • Watering: Ferns need consistent moisture. Water in the morning to keep soil damp but not soggy. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer.
  • Pruning: Trim dead fronds in spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp scissors for best results.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer. Use a light hand to avoid over-fertilising.
  • Dividing: Divide ferns every 3-5 years in early spring. This promotes healthy growth and prevents overcrowding.
  • Winter Protection: In colder climates, add mulch around the base to protect roots from frost.
  • Transplanting: Best done in spring. Water well after moving to reduce transplant shock.

Frequently Asked Questions Ferns

What function can ferns have in a garden?

In a garden, ferns serve multiple functions: they provide elegant texture and lush greenery, especially in shaded or woodland gardens where other plants may struggle. Their varied shapes and sizes can be used to create serene, naturalistic settings or to soften the edges of paths and borders. Ferns can be focal points in their own right or act as a verdant backdrop to more colorful plants, contributing to a garden's overall aesthetic and diversity.

Which is the best period for transplanting ferns?

The optimal period for transplanting ferns is during the early spring or early autumn, mirroring the best planting times. Transplanting during these cooler, moister seasons helps minimize transplant shock and allows the ferns to establish their root systems before the stresses of summer heat or winter cold. During these times, the natural growth cycle of ferns is at a point where they can recover more readily from the disturbance of transplanting.

Which plants can be combined well with ferns?

Ferns blend harmoniously with a range of plant types, particularly those that share their love for shaded environs. They are excellent companions to other shade-tolerant perennials, hostas, and ornamental grasses that appreciate similar growing conditions. Ferns also pair well with ground cover plants and can be underplanted beneath flowering trees or shrubs. Their lush foliage contrasts beautifully with the broad leaves of hostas or the delicate fronds of other fern species.

In which soil type do most ferns grow well?

Ferns generally flourish in well-drained, moist soil rich in organic matter. They favor a slightly acidic to neutral pH balance. To mimic their natural habitat, adding leaf mold or compost to the planting area can be beneficial. It is important to ensure that the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged, as standing water can lead to root rot and other issues that could compromise the health of these shade-loving perennials.

What popular types of ferns are there?

Popular varieties of ferns include the Dryopteris erythrosora, known for its coppery-pink new growth, and the graceful Matteuccia struthiopteris, commonly called the shuttlecock fern. The Cyrtomium falcatum, or Japanese holly fern, with its glossy leaves, adds visual interest, while the Polystichum setiferum offers a soft, feathery appeal. Asplenium scolopendrium, or hart's tongue fern, is prized for its unique, strap-shaped fronds, and Blechnum spicant, with its evergreen nature, provides year-round greenery.

In what period can I best plant ferns?

Ferns are best planted during the milder times of year, specifically in early spring or early autumn. This timing allows ferns to establish themselves while the weather is cool and the soil is moist, which is ideal for root development. As ferns prefer conditions that replicate their natural understory habitats, these periods provide a reduced risk of stress from temperature extremes or drought, ensuring a stronger start for these elegant foliage plants.
