Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Common examples include Delphinium, Verbena, Thalictrum, Aconitum, and Lupinus. These plants are often used as vertical garden plants or high border plants, providing a stunning backdrop in garden designs. Tall perennials are also known as upright-growing perennials or large perennials. They are ideal for the back of the border, creating a layered effect in garden beds. These plants are not only beautiful but also practical, as they can fill empty spaces and add interest to otherwise flat areas. For those looking to enhance their garden, tall perennials for garden structure are a great choice. They are among the best tall flowers for summer gardens, offering vibrant colours and textures. Whether used as perennials for height in borders or perennials for adding height in borders, these plants are a valuable addition to any garden.

Features of upright and towering perennial plants

Tall perennials, also known as towering perennial plants or high-growing garden perennials, are a great choice for adding height and structure to any garden. These plants can grow in various forms, often reaching impressive heights and spreading widely. They are perfect for creating vertical interest and can be used as high border plants or in a vertical garden. The development of tall perennials begins in early spring when they start to sprout. As the season progresses, they grow rapidly, reaching their full height by summer. The growth rate and final size depend on factors like soil quality, sunlight, and care. By late summer, these plants are usually in full bloom, showcasing their beauty. Tall perennials typically bloom from late spring to early autumn. The exact blooming period can vary based on climate, weather conditions, and the plant's age. Proper soil preparation and regular care can enhance their flowering. The blooms come in a variety of colours, influenced by the species, cultivar, and growing conditions. Light, climate, and soil type all play a role in determining the vibrancy of the flowers. Some tall perennials are known for their fragrance, which can add an extra dimension to the garden. The scent may come from the flowers, leaves, or stems, and its intensity can vary. These plants can attract pollinators, contributing to biodiversity. The mature height of tall perennials can vary, but they often reach several feet tall. This makes them ideal for the back of the border or for adding height in borders. Choosing the right location and providing proper care will ensure they thrive and enhance the garden's visual appeal.

Tall perennials are a wonderful addition to any garden, providing height and structure. The leaves of these majestic perennial blooms vary greatly. Some have broad, lush green leaves, while others display narrow, needle-like foliage. Leaf colour can range from deep green to silvery grey, depending on the species. The texture of the leaves also differs, with some being smooth and glossy, while others are rough or hairy. These plants may lose their leaves in winter, but many remain evergreen, depending on the climate and species chosen.

When it comes to winter hardiness, tall perennials can be quite resilient. They can withstand cold temperatures, but factors like wind exposure and soil conditions play a role. It's important to choose the right species for your local climate to ensure they survive frost periods. Some tall perennials are evergreen, maintaining their foliage year-round, while others shed leaves annually. This depends on the type of plant and its natural habitat.

In terms of heat and drought resistance, tall perennials are generally robust. Their deep root systems help them access water during dry spells. Leaf structure, such as a waxy coating or fine hairs, can also aid in reducing water loss. Originating from various climates, these plants are adaptable to different conditions.

Regarding toxicity, most tall perennials are safe for gardens with children and pets. While some may have mild toxicity, they are generally harmless with normal garden use. Always ensure proper handling and placement in the garden.

Tall perennials contribute significantly to biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for insects and birds, supporting a balanced ecosystem. By mimicking natural habitats, these plants enhance garden resilience against diseases and pests, making them a valuable choice for any garden.

How to use tall perennials in borders or screens

Tall perennials, also known as towering perennial plants or high-growing garden perennials, are perfect for adding height and drama to any garden. These vertical garden plants can be used in various ways to enhance garden structure and create stunning visual effects. Here are some applications for tall perennials:

    • Border: Use tall perennials for height in borders to create a layered look. They work well as high border plants, providing a backdrop for shorter plants.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups to form a striking display. This method is ideal for creating a focal point in the garden.
    • Screen: Use as a natural screen or windbreak. Tall perennials can act as a privacy barrier or windscreen, offering both beauty and function.
    • Solitary: Plant as a solitary specimen to draw attention. A single large perennial can serve as a garden centrepiece.
    • Pot or Planter: Grow in pots or planters for flexibility. This allows for easy movement and arrangement in the garden.
Consider these options when planning to buy tall perennials for your garden. They are not only the best tall flowers for summer gardens but also excellent for adding height and structure. Choose upright-growing perennials to transform your garden into a vibrant and dynamic space.

Combining with low or medium plants

Tall perennials are perfect for adding height and structure to any garden. They can be beautifully combined with low or medium plants to create a balanced and visually appealing landscape. Consider pairing tall perennials with ground covers like creeping thyme or low-growing sedums. These combinations create a stunning contrast in height and texture. Another great option is to mix tall perennials with medium-sized shrubs such as spirea or dwarf hydrangeas. This adds layers to the garden, making it more dynamic and interesting. Tall perennials like delphiniums or hollyhocks can also be paired with ornamental grasses. The grasses sway gently in the wind, complementing the majestic perennial blooms. These combinations are not only visually striking but also attract pollinators, enhancing the garden's biodiversity. Using tall perennials for garden structure helps define spaces and create focal points. They are ideal for the back of the border, providing a backdrop for smaller plants. This arrangement ensures that all plants receive adequate sunlight and air circulation. Tall perennials are truly versatile, making them the best tall flowers for summer gardens. They bring vertical interest and elegance, transforming any garden into a vibrant and lively space.

Site selection and support for tall growers

Tall perennials, also known as towering perennial plants or high-growing garden perennials, thrive in full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth, so choose a spot with at least six hours of sun. These vertical garden plants can be wind-sensitive. To protect them, plant near a fence or use stakes for support. The ideal soil for tall perennials is well-draining and rich in nutrients. Regular fertilisation helps them grow strong. Ensure the soil is not too compact, as this can hinder root development. Soil moisture is crucial for these high border plants. They prefer consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry the soil quickly, so mulching helps retain moisture. Tall perennials prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Test the soil to ensure it meets their needs. Adjusting the pH can improve nutrient uptake, promoting healthy growth. These perennials are perfect for adding height in borders, making them ideal for the back of the border. With the right care, they become stunning upright-growing perennials in any garden.

When and how to plant tall perennials

Tall perennials, also known as majestic perennial blooms, can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For those with roots or clumps, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The plant spacing for tall perennials depends on the type, initial size, growth rate, and the number of plants per metre. Information on the number of plants per metre or square metre is usually found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for tall perennials. The soil should be well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Before planting, loosen the soil to allow roots to spread easily. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells to ensure healthy growth. Tall perennials, such as vertical garden plants and high border plants, add height and structure to any garden, making them ideal for the back of the border or for adding height in borders.

    Maintenance Tips for Tall Perennials

Tall perennials, also known as towering perennial plants or high-growing garden perennials, are a great choice for adding height in borders. Proper care ensures they thrive and enhance the garden's beauty.

    • Care and Maintenance: Tall perennials need well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Regularly check for support needs as they grow.
    • Pruning Advice: Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth. Use sharp tools to remove dead stems, promoting healthy development.
    • Fertilising: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced fertiliser. Repeat every 4-6 weeks during the growing season for optimal growth.
    • Watering: Water deeply once a week, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, it's time to water.
    • Dividing: Divide every 3-4 years in early spring to rejuvenate plants and prevent overcrowding.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: Transplant in early spring or autumn. Water well after moving to help roots establish.
