Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

What are hardy ground cover plants?

Hardy ground covers are plants that spread across the soil, creating a dense mat. These plants are known for their ability to survive harsh conditions, making them ideal for gardens in colder climates. They are often referred to as winterproof creeping plants or frost-resistant ground covers. These plants are perfect for covering bare patches in the garden and can help prevent soil erosion. Hardy ground covers are used in gardens to provide year-round greenery. They are especially useful in areas where other plants might struggle during the winter months. Some popular genera include Bergenia, Vinca, Ajuga, Sedum, and Lamium. These plants are not only frost-hardy but also require minimal maintenance, making them a great choice for busy gardeners. In the UK, hardy ground covers for UK winters are a popular choice due to their resilience. Frost-proof spreading plants can thrive even in the coldest months, ensuring the garden remains vibrant. By choosing the right frost-hardy groundcovers, gardens can maintain their beauty throughout the year, providing a lush and inviting space.

Characteristics of frost-tolerant ground cover plants

Hardy ground covers are essential for gardens, especially in regions with cold winters. These frost-resistant ground plants spread across the soil, creating a protective layer. They grow low to the ground, often forming dense mats that can cover large areas. This growth habit helps prevent soil erosion and suppress weeds. The development of hardy ground covers begins in early spring. As temperatures rise, these cold-hardy ground covers start to sprout. By summer, they reach their full spread, providing a lush carpet of greenery. Their ability to withstand frost makes them ideal for UK winters, ensuring the garden remains vibrant even in colder months. The blooming period for hardy ground covers varies. Some may flower in late spring, while others bloom in summer. Factors like climate, soil quality, and care influence their flowering time. Consistent watering and proper soil preparation enhance their blooming potential. The bloom colours of frost-resistant ground covers range from white and pink to purple and yellow. The specific hue depends on the plant species and cultivar. Soil pH, sunlight, and climate also play a role in determining the intensity of the bloom colours. While not all hardy ground covers are known for their scent, some varieties offer a pleasant aroma. This fragrance can come from the leaves or flowers, adding an extra sensory dimension to the garden. The intensity of the scent may vary based on the plant's age and health. Mature hardy ground cover plants typically reach a height of 10 to 30 cm. This low profile makes them perfect for layering in garden designs. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care ensures they thrive, offering a beautiful and functional addition to any garden.

Hardy ground covers are essential for gardens, especially in regions with cold winters. These plants have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures that help them survive harsh conditions. The leaves can be broad or narrow, with colours ranging from deep green to variegated patterns. The texture might be smooth or slightly hairy, which can affect their ability to retain moisture and resist frost. Most hardy ground covers retain their leaves throughout winter, providing year-round greenery. However, some may lose leaves depending on the species and climate conditions.

Winterproof creeping plants are known for their frost resistance. They can withstand low temperatures and periods of frost, making them ideal for UK winters. Factors like wind exposure and soil conditions also play a role in their survival. Well-drained soil and sheltered locations can enhance their frost-hardiness.

These ground cover plants are often evergreen, maintaining their foliage all year. This characteristic depends on the plant type and the local climate. In milder areas, they are more likely to stay green, while in harsher climates, some may shed leaves.

Frost-resistant ground covers are also heat and drought-tolerant. Their origin, leaf structure, and root systems contribute to this resilience. A waxy leaf coating or fine hairs can reduce water loss, while deep roots access moisture from the soil.

Regarding safety, hardy ground covers are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They pose no danger when used in typical garden settings.

These plants support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. They mimic natural habitats, promoting a balanced ecosystem and increasing garden resilience against pests. Hardy ground covers are a valuable addition to any garden, offering both beauty and functionality.

Where to use hardy creepers in exposed areas

Hardy ground covers are perfect for gardens that face harsh winters. These frost-resistant ground plants can thrive in cold conditions, making them ideal for UK gardens. Here are some ways to use hardy ground covers in your garden:

    • Border: Use hardy ground covers to create a lush border that withstands winter chills.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a dense, frost-proof spreading effect.
    • Underplanting: Ideal for underplanting trees and shrubs, providing a cold-hardy layer.
    • Talud: Stabilise slopes with frost-hardy groundcovers to prevent erosion.
    • Bodembedekker: Use as a winter ground cover to protect soil and suppress weeds.
    • Insectenhoek: Create a biodiversity zone with overwintering groundcovers to attract beneficial insects.
Consider these options when planning to buy hardy ground covers. They not only enhance the garden's beauty but also ensure it remains vibrant through cold winters. Choose frost-hardy groundcovers to cold-proof your garden effectively.

Combinations with evergreen and low-care plants

Hardy ground covers are perfect for creating a lush garden that thrives even in cold winters. These frost-resistant ground covers can be combined with various plant types to enhance the garden's beauty. Pairing hardy ground cover plants with evergreen shrubs like boxwood or holly creates a stunning contrast. The deep green of the shrubs complements the low-growing, winterproof creeping plants, adding texture and depth to the garden. Another beautiful combination is with ornamental grasses such as blue fescue or carex. These grasses add movement and a soft touch to the garden, while the frost-proof spreading plants provide a stable base. For a splash of colour, consider planting hardy ground covers alongside spring bulbs like crocuses or snowdrops. As the bulbs bloom, they bring vibrant hues that stand out against the green carpet of groundcovers. These combinations work well because they offer year-round interest and require minimal maintenance. The frost-hardy groundcovers protect the soil and suppress weeds, while the evergreen and low-care plants ensure the garden remains attractive throughout the seasons. This makes them ideal for those looking to create a beautiful, easy-to-care-for garden with hardy ground covers for UK winters.

Conditions and soil for winter success

Hardy ground covers thrive in various light conditions, from full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth, so it's important to choose the right spot. These frost-resistant ground plants can handle some wind, but providing a windbreak, like a fence or hedge, can help protect them. The ideal soil for cold-hardy ground covers is well-draining and rich in nutrients. Adding compost can improve soil quality, and regular fertilisation supports healthy growth. Maintaining the right soil moisture is crucial. Too much sun or wind can dry out the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. These hardy ground cover plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Testing the soil pH and adjusting it with lime or sulphur ensures optimal conditions. By understanding these factors, frost-hardy groundcovers can successfully overwinter and provide a lush garden all year round.

When and how to plant frost-hardy ground cover

Hardy ground covers can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The plant spacing for hardy ground covers depends on the type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Before planting, loosen the soil to allow roots to spread easily. When planting hardy ground cover plants, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, and press gently. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially in dry periods. Winterproof creeping plants need consistent moisture to establish well. Frost-resistant ground covers are perfect for gardens in cold climates, providing year-round coverage and protection. These groundcovers for cold winters are excellent for overwintering, ensuring a lush garden even in the chilliest months.

Winter Ground Cover: Caring for Hardy Ground Covers

Hardy ground covers are perfect for gardens in colder climates. These frost-resistant ground plants need proper care to thrive.

    • Watering: Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Check the soil by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water.
    • Pruning: Trim back dead or damaged parts in early spring. Use clean, sharp tools to encourage healthy growth.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring. This helps the plants grow strong and healthy.
    • Dividing: Divide the plants every few years in autumn to prevent overcrowding and promote growth.
    • Winter Protection: Add a layer of mulch in late autumn to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: Move plants in early spring or autumn. Water well after transplanting to help them settle.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding frost-hardy groundcovers. These groundcovers for cold winters are not only practical but also add beauty to any garden.
