Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Unlike deciduous plants, these shrubs do not shed their leaves in winter, making them ideal for maintaining a lush appearance. Common types include Buxus, Ilex, Skimmia, Hebe, and Prunus. These shrubs are known for their ability to withstand various weather conditions, making them winter-hardy shrubs. Evergreen shrubs are also referred to as all-season leafy shrubs or winter-hardy shrubs. They are perfect for creating year-round green garden shrubs that add structure and beauty to any outdoor space. These shrubs are often used for privacy, as they form dense, leafy barriers. The best evergreen shrubs for privacy include low-maintenance evergreen bushes that require minimal care. In the garden, evergreen shrubs serve multiple purposes. They provide a backdrop for seasonal flowers, act as windbreaks, and offer shelter for wildlife. Their persistent foliage ensures that the garden remains vibrant even in the colder months. Whether used as ornamental bushes or structural evergreens, these shrubs are a valuable addition to any garden.

Traits of winter-hardy and all-season ornamental bushes

Evergreen shrubs, also known as year-round green garden shrubs or non-deciduous ornamental shrubs, are a popular choice for gardens. These shrubs maintain their leaves throughout the year, providing consistent greenery. They grow in various forms, from compact bushes to taller, more spread-out shapes, making them versatile for different garden designs. The development of evergreen shrubs begins with new shoots in spring, gradually maturing into dense foliage. As they grow, these shrubs can reach different widths, depending on the species and care provided. They are known for their resilience, adapting well to various climates and soil types. Evergreen shrubs typically bloom in spring or early summer. The exact timing can vary based on climate, weather conditions, and the shrub's age. Proper soil preparation and regular care can enhance their blooming period. The flowers of evergreen shrubs come in a range of colours, influenced by the species, cultivar, and environmental factors like soil quality and light exposure. These factors also affect the vibrancy and duration of the blooms. While not all evergreen shrubs are known for their fragrance, some varieties do offer a pleasant scent. This can be influenced by the type of shrub, its age, and the care it receives. Fragrant shrubs can add an extra sensory dimension to a garden. Mature evergreen shrubs can vary in height, often reaching between 1 to 3 metres. Their height can be influenced by the planting location, care, and the specific type of shrub. They are ideal for creating privacy and adding structure to a garden. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider the option to buy evergreen shrubs for a lasting impact.

Evergreen shrubs are a popular choice for gardens due to their year-round greenery. The leaves of these shrubs come in various shapes, such as oval or lance-shaped, and can be glossy or matte. Leaf colour ranges from deep green to variegated patterns, adding visual interest. The structure of the leaves often includes a waxy coating, which helps retain moisture and protect against harsh weather. Evergreen shrubs do not lose their leaves in winter, making them ideal for maintaining garden structure throughout the year.

These shrubs are known for their winter-hardiness, withstanding cold temperatures and frost. Factors like wind exposure and soil conditions play a role in their resilience. Planting in sheltered spots and ensuring well-drained soil can enhance their ability to survive harsh winters. Evergreen shrubs are also heat and drought-tolerant, thanks to their deep root systems and leaf adaptations. Originating from various climates, they have evolved to withstand dry conditions, making them suitable for low-maintenance gardens.

In terms of safety, evergreen shrubs are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute to biodiversity by providing shelter and food for wildlife. Their persistent foliage offers nesting sites and protection for birds and insects, supporting a balanced ecosystem. By choosing evergreen shrubs, gardeners can enjoy a vibrant, all-season green garden while promoting environmental health.

Where to use evergreen shrubs in structured planting

Evergreen shrubs are a fantastic choice for any garden, providing year-round greenery and structure. These non-deciduous ornamental shrubs are perfect for creating a lush and vibrant garden throughout the year. Here are some ways to use evergreen shrubs in your garden:

    • Border: Use evergreen shrubs to create a neat and tidy border, adding definition and structure to garden beds.
    • Privacy hedge: Plant evergreen shrubs as a hedge to create a natural privacy screen, perfect for blocking unwanted views.
    • Group planting: Combine different types of evergreen shrubs for a varied and interesting display, offering texture and colour.
    • Solitary feature: Use a single evergreen shrub as a focal point in the garden, drawing attention with its unique shape and foliage.
    • Pot or planter: Place evergreen shrubs in pots or planters for a versatile and mobile garden feature, ideal for patios or balconies.
    • Windbreak: Plant evergreen shrubs as a windbreak to protect more delicate plants from harsh winds.
    • Insect corner: Create a biodiversity zone by planting evergreen shrubs that attract beneficial insects, enhancing the garden ecosystem.

By incorporating evergreen shrubs, gardens can maintain their beauty and structure all year round. Consider these versatile shrubs for a low-maintenance and visually appealing garden.

Pairing Evergreen with Seasonal Colour Plants

Evergreen shrubs are a fantastic choice for any garden, providing year-round greenery and structure. These all-season leafy shrubs can be beautifully combined with a variety of other plant types to create a vibrant and dynamic garden. Consider pairing evergreen shrubs with perennials like Echinacea or Rudbeckia for a burst of seasonal colour. These combinations not only add visual interest but also ensure that the garden remains lively throughout the year. For a more unique look, try mixing evergreen shrubs with ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus or Pennisetum. These grasses add texture and movement, complementing the solid structure of winter-hardy shrubs. Another great combination is with spring bulbs like Tulips or Daffodils, which provide a splash of colour in early spring while the evergreen shrubs maintain their lush foliage. These plant combinations work well because evergreen shrubs offer a stable backdrop that highlights the changing colours and textures of the other plants. The contrast between the persistent foliage of evergreen ornamental bushes and the seasonal blooms creates a balanced and appealing garden design. By choosing low-maintenance evergreen bushes, the garden remains easy to care for while still offering a stunning display throughout the seasons.

Soil and location for evergreen success

Evergreen shrubs thrive in various light conditions, but most prefer full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth and leaf colour. Too much shade can lead to sparse foliage. Wind can be a concern for evergreen shrubs, as strong gusts may damage leaves. Planting them near a wall or using windbreaks can help protect them. The ideal soil for evergreen shrubs is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth. Evergreen shrubs need consistent soil moisture. Too much sun or wind can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Evergreen shrubs prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can be beneficial. These shrubs are known for their persistent foliage, providing year-round greenery. They are perfect for creating structure in the garden, as they don’t lose their leaves. With the right care, evergreen ornamental bushes can be a stunning addition to any garden.

When and how to plant evergreen varieties

Evergreen shrubs, also known as all-season leafy shrubs or winter-hardy shrubs, can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots. However, avoid planting during frost periods. For shrubs with a root ball or bare roots, the best time to plant is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The planting distance for evergreen shrubs depends on the type of shrub, its size at planting, growth rate, and the number of plants per metre. Information about the number of plants per metre or square metre is usually available on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for evergreen shrubs. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and as deep as the container. When planting, place the shrub in the hole, fill with soil, and water thoroughly. Evergreen shrubs need regular watering, especially in the first year, to establish strong roots. This ensures the shrubs remain healthy and vibrant, providing year-round greenery in the garden.

    Maintenance for Evergreen Shrubs

Evergreen shrubs, also known as year-round green garden shrubs, are a great addition to any garden. Proper care ensures they remain healthy and vibrant. Here are some tips for maintaining these leaf-retaining shrubs:

    • Watering: Evergreen shrubs need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Water deeply to encourage strong root growth.
    • Pruning: Prune evergreen ornamental bushes in late winter or early spring. This helps maintain their shape and encourages new growth. Use sharp, clean tools to avoid damaging the plant.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support growth. Follow the package instructions for the correct amount. Fertilise once a year for best results.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, protect shrubs with persistent foliage by mulching around the base. This helps insulate the roots from freezing temperatures.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant all-season green shrubs in early spring or autumn. Water well after moving to help them settle in their new location.

For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding structural evergreens. These shrubs that don’t go bare provide year-round interest and can be a focal point in any landscape. Buy evergreen shrubs to enjoy their lasting beauty.
