Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Root type

A plant or tree can be delivered in a pot, with a root ball or with bare roots.

  • Pot: the advantage of plants grown in pots is that they can be planted all year round, with the exception of periods of frost. After planting, both the root system and the visible, above-ground parts of the plant/tree will continue to grow immediately, provided temperatures are high enough.
  • Root ball: plants and trees with (wired) root balls can be planted roughly between October and April, depending on the weather. During these months, the plants are dormant and at their least vulnerable, which is ideal for planting. Because the plants are freshly uprooted (dug up) at the growers, the root system may be somewhat damaged. Once planted, the plant/tree will first form new roots and will then continue to grow above ground.
  • Bare roots: plants and trees delivered with bare roots can be planted roughly between October and April, depending on the weather. During these months, the plants are dormant and at their least vulnerable, which is ideal for planting. Because the plants are freshly uprooted (dug up) at the growers, the root system may be somewhat damaged. Once planted, the plant/tree will first form new roots and will then continue to grow above ground. Because there is no sand on the roots, the plants are lightweight and therefore easy to carry.
Height at time of delivery (cm)

Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Width at time of delivery (cm)
Width at time of delivery (cm)

Our plants can be ordered in different sizes. By width on delivery (cm), we mean the approximate width of the plant in centimetres when we deliver it to you.

The number of centimetres indicated refers to the widest part of the plant. It may not be as wide in other places, since it is a natural product and does not have standard dimensions.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Application
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Ilex Crenata Green Hedge: Plant Properties and Characteristics

The Ilex crenata 'Green Hedge' is an evergreen hedge plant known for its vibrant green leaves. • Characteristics

Ideal placement of a Ilex crenata 'Green Hedge'

Ilex crenata 'Green hedge' thrives in various locations, including shade, partial shade, and full sun. The ideal spot for this hedge plant is in well-drained soil, which supports healthy growth and vibrant foliage. A good location ensures the hedge plant grows tall and strong, providing a lush and dense appearance. This green hedge benefits from being planted in all soil types, as long as they are well-drained. It prefers slightly moist conditions but can adapt to drier soils if necessary. Ilex crenata 'Green hedge' is versatile and can be used as a block hedge or a traditional hedge, making it a popular choice for gardens. Choosing the right spot is crucial for the success of this hedge plant, as it ensures optimal growth and a beautiful, healthy appearance.

Planting a Ilex crenata 'Green Hedge'

When planting the Ilex crenata 'Green hedge', proper soil preparation is essential for growth. The soil should be well-tilled to improve water drainage and nutrient availability. This step is crucial before planting hedging plants like Ilex crenata 'Green hedge'. Good soil preparation ensures that the soil is rich in organic matter, such as compost, which is well-mixed into the existing earth. Pot-grown plants can be planted year-round, except during frost periods. Plants with a jute sack around the root ball can be placed in the ground with the jute intact. After planting, it is important to water the hedge plant until it is well-rooted. The size of the hedge plant at planting determines the number of plants per square metre. Soil preparation is key to successful planting. Follow the planting instructions for best results.

Pruning a Ilex crenata 'Green Hedge'

Pruning the Ilex crenata 'Green hedge' hedge is important to keep it healthy and looking good. Regular trimming helps the hedge stay dense and neat. It also encourages new growth, making the hedge look fuller. The best time to prune this hedge is in late spring or early summer. Pruning once or twice a year is usually enough. Use sharp tools like hedge shears or a pruning saw for the best results. Good tools make clean cuts, which is better for the plant. Always clean tools before use to prevent spreading any issues. For the best advice, trim the Ilex crenata hedge evenly and avoid cutting too much at once. This helps the hedge maintain its shape and health. Regular care will keep the Ilex crenata 'Green hedge' looking its best in any garden.

Watering a Ilex crenata 'Green Hedge'

Ilex crenata 'Green hedge' is a popular choice for hedging plants. This hedge plant has a normal water requirement. It is important to water the plant deeply rather than giving small amounts daily. This helps the roots grow strong. The best time to water is early in the morning or late in the afternoon to reduce evaporation. Always check the soil to see if the plant needs water. If the soil is dry, it is time to water. Make sure excess water can drain away, whether the plant is in the ground or in a pot. For new plants, use a watering can or hose until they are well-rooted. Drip irrigation systems work well once the plant is established. Ilex crenata 'Green hedge' is not highly drought-resistant, so regular watering is important, especially during dry periods.

Fertilising a Ilex crenata 'Green Hedge'

Fertilising Ilex crenata 'Green hedge' is essential for healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Regular feeding ensures the hedge plant remains strong and lush. Organic fertilisers are recommended as they prevent root and leaf burn, unlike chemical options. Heijnen's Organic Starter Fertilizer and Organic Maintenance Fertilizer are ideal choices. Apply fertiliser twice a year, in spring and summer, to support the hedge's development. The amount of fertiliser depends on the size of the Ilex crenata hedge. Ensure the fertiliser reaches the soil by watering the garden, especially during dry periods, to help nutrients reach the roots. This practice keeps hedging plants healthy and thriving.

The characteristics of a Ilex crenata 'Green Hedge'
