Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Flower colour
Flower colour

The flower colour(s) of the plant.

Type
Type

By 'type' we mean the version/growth habit of the plant that is delivered. This is because different types of certain plants can be ordered. We are happy to explain the different types/growth habits:

  • Shrub - shrubs are plants that branch from the soil in multiple branches of different sizes. A shrub does not have a central stem and therefore does not grow as tall as a tree.
  • Trellis - with the trellis type, the plant is delivered with a trellis. This helps the plant grow better in height and/or width, forming beautiful green foliage.
  • Cane - these plants are supplied with a cane/canes. The cane supports the plant to grow further in height and keeps the growth of the plant in check.
  • Bonsai  - the bonsai type is known for its small growth habit, which makes the plant look like a miniature tree. To keep the plant in bonsai shape, it should be pruned/trimmed regularly.
  • Bowl - with the bowl type, the plant is supplied in a bowl. This is a wide, low planter/flower pot. A bowl ensures a broad growth habit for the plant.
  • Hanging pot - plants in hanging pots are ideal for gardens, terraces or balconies where ground space is limited. Hanging the plants creates a vertical growth habit from top to bottom.
  • Irregular branching - irregular branching refers to the growth habit, whereby the branches of the plant grow irregularly and contortedly with many branches and twists. This gives the plant an extra natural character.
  • Irregular branching old skin - the irregular branching old skin plant type is a plant that grows contortedly and irregularly with a bark or stem that looks old and wrinkled/rough.
  • On stem - the on-stem type denotes plants grown on a low rootstock which grow in height. This allows you to create attractive height differences and relief in your garden.
  • Mini stem - like plants on stem, plants on a mini stem are also grown on a low rootstock. With a mini stem, however, the stem remains quite low, so these plants do not grow very tall.
  • Pompom - the pompom type means that the plant is very compact and densely branched, giving it a round, spherical appearance. The side branches, on which the pompom (ball) grows, grow closely together. Regular pruning is necessary to maintain the shape.
  • Pyramid - the pyramid type indicates the growth form of the plant. It grows in a pyramid shape with a wide base and the plant becomes narrower toward the top, reaching a point.
Flowering month
Flowering month

The month(s) in which the plant flowers under normal (weather) conditions.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

What defines a container or pot-grown garden plant?

Container plants, also known as pot-grown outdoor plants or large container plants, are versatile additions to any garden. These plants are grown in pots or containers, making them easy to move and arrange. They are perfect for patios, balconies, and small gardens where space is limited. Popular choices include Olea, Citrus, Nerium, Laurus, and Fuchsia, which thrive in containers. Container plants are often used for their decorative appeal. They can add colour and texture to a garden, and are ideal for creating focal points. Many gardeners choose Mediterranean container plants for their drought resistance and beauty. Patio plants like these are also great for those looking for low-maintenance options. These plants are not just for outdoor use; they can also be brought indoors during colder months, especially frost-sensitive potted plants. This makes them suitable for year-round enjoyment. When selecting the best plants for containers, consider factors like sunlight, water needs, and the plant's growth habit. With the right care, container planting can transform any space into a vibrant and inviting area.

Key features of patio and potted plant varieties

Container plants, also known as potted garden plants or patio container plants, are versatile and can thrive in various settings. These plants grow in pots, allowing for easy movement and arrangement. They can spread to fill their containers, creating a lush appearance. The development of container plants varies; they start as small seedlings and gradually grow to fill their pots, reaching maturity over time. The blooming period for container plants depends on several factors, including climate, weather conditions, and care. In warmer climates, they may bloom earlier, while cooler temperatures can delay flowering. Proper soil preparation and regular maintenance are crucial for healthy blooms. The colours of container plant flowers can range widely, influenced by the plant species, soil quality, and light exposure. Some may have vibrant hues, while others offer more subtle tones. Container plants are not typically known for their fragrance, but some varieties may have scented leaves or flowers. The intensity of the scent can vary based on the plant type and growing conditions. The mature height of container plants depends on the species and care provided. They can be used to create visual interest in a garden, with taller plants adding height and smaller ones filling in gaps. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care ensures they reach their full potential. For those looking to buy container plants, selecting the best plants for containers and considering low-maintenance patio plants can enhance any garden space.

Container plants, also known as pot-grown outdoor plants or large container plants, offer a versatile way to enhance any garden. The leaves of these plants vary greatly, with shapes ranging from broad to narrow, and colours from deep green to variegated patterns. Leaf structure can be smooth or textured, depending on the species. Some container plants are evergreen, retaining their foliage year-round, while others shed leaves in winter, influenced by species and climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is crucial for container plants, as they can be frost-sensitive. Factors like temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure affect their survival. Choosing the right species and ensuring proper soil conditions can enhance their resilience. Many container plants are evergreen, but some may lose leaves annually, depending on the type and location.

Heat and drought tolerance are important for container plants, especially in Mediterranean climates. Origin, leaf structure, and root depth play roles in their ability to withstand dry conditions. A waxy coating or hairy leaves can help reduce water loss, while deep roots access moisture from the soil.

Regarding safety, container plants are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and birds, supporting ecosystem balance. Container plants can mimic natural habitats, promoting garden resilience against diseases and pests. They are ideal for creating vibrant, low-maintenance patio spaces, offering a range of ornamental options for both indoor and outdoor use.

Where to use container plants for mobile design

Container plants, also known as potted garden plants or patio container plants, offer versatile options for any garden. They are perfect for creating stunning displays and can be easily moved to suit different needs. Here are some ways to use container plants effectively in the garden:

    • Border: Use container plants to define the edges of a garden, adding structure and colour.
    • Group planting: Arrange multiple containers together for a lush, layered look.
    • Solitary: Place a single, striking plant in a container as a focal point.
    • Patio: Ideal for patios, container plants can transform a space with minimal effort.
    • Pot, planter, or flower box: Choose pots that complement the plant and the garden style.
    • Underplanting: Use smaller container plants beneath taller ones for added depth.
    • Windbreak: Arrange containers to shield delicate plants from strong winds.
    • Privacy screen: Use tall container plants to create a natural privacy barrier.
    • Insect corner: Attract beneficial insects by planting a variety of container plants.
    • Shade garden: Select shade-tolerant container plants for areas with limited sunlight.

For those looking to buy container plants, consider options like Mediterranean container plants or frost-sensitive potted plants. These choices can enhance both indoor and outdoor spaces, offering beauty and flexibility.

Pairing potted plants with herbs, grasses or flowers

Container plants can be beautifully combined with various plant types to create a stunning garden display. Pairing container plants with herbs like rosemary or thyme adds fragrance and texture. Grasses such as Festuca or Carex provide movement and contrast. For a splash of colour, consider flowers like Geraniums or Petunias. These combinations not only enhance the visual appeal but also offer practical benefits. Herbs in containers are easy to access for cooking, while grasses add a modern touch. Flowers bring vibrant hues, making the garden lively. Large container plants like Ficus or Olive trees can be the focal point, surrounded by smaller potted plants. This mix of pot-grown outdoor plants creates a layered effect, adding depth to the garden. Mediterranean container plants like Lavender or Oleander thrive in pots and are perfect for sunny spots. Choosing low-maintenance patio plants ensures the garden remains beautiful with minimal effort. Frost-sensitive potted plants can be moved indoors during colder months, offering flexibility. This approach to container planting allows for creativity and adaptability, making it ideal for any garden space.

Soil, drainage and watering needs in containers

Container plants, also known as potted garden plants or patio container plants, thrive in various light conditions. Most prefer full sun, but some do well in partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects growth, so consider the plant type and location. Wind can be a concern for container plants. To protect them, place pots in sheltered spots or use windbreaks like fences or hedges. The right soil is crucial for container plants. A well-draining mix is essential to prevent waterlogging. Adding perlite or sand can improve drainage. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth. Container plants need consistent moisture, but overwatering can harm them. Check soil moisture regularly, especially in sunny or windy conditions, as these can dry out the soil quickly. The pH level of the soil also matters. Most container plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Test the soil and adjust with lime or sulphur if needed. Choosing the right plants for containers, such as Mediterranean container plants or frost-sensitive potted plants, ensures a thriving patio garden. With proper care, container planting can be a rewarding way to enjoy ornamental plants for containers both indoors and outdoors.

How and when to plant in patio pots

Container plants can be planted year-round, except during frost periods. Pot-grown outdoor plants are versatile and can be placed in the garden at any time. However, large container plants with root balls are best planted in spring or autumn. The planting distance for container plants depends on the type, size at planting, and growth rate. It's important to check the plant properties on the Heijnen product page for the number of plants per metre. Proper soil preparation is crucial for container planting. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the pot and place the plant at the same depth as in the pot. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially for frost-sensitive potted plants. This ensures healthy growth and vibrant patio plants. Remember, ornamental plants for containers and Mediterranean container plants thrive with the right care and attention.

    Care for Long-Lasting Container Plants

Container plants, also known as potted garden plants or patio container plants, require specific care to thrive. Here are some essential tips:
    • Watering: Container plants need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by inserting a finger into the soil. Water when the top inch feels dry.
    • Pruning: Regular pruning helps maintain shape and encourages growth. Use clean, sharp tools and prune in early spring or after flowering.
    • Fertilising: Feed container plants every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser. This supports healthy growth and vibrant blooms.
    • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years to refresh the soil and provide more space for roots. Spring is the best time for this task.
    • Winter Protection: For frost-sensitive potted plants, move them indoors or provide insulation during cold months to prevent damage.
    • Dividing: Some container plants benefit from dividing every few years to rejuvenate and promote new growth.
Container planting offers flexibility for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Whether choosing Mediterranean container plants or ornamental plants for containers, proper care ensures a thriving display. For those looking to expand their collection, consider options to buy container plants that suit your garden's needs.

    Frequently Asked Questions Container plants

What function can container plants have in a garden?

Container plants serve multifunctional roles in a garden. They add vertical dimension and can be used to create focal points or to define different areas within the space. Container plants are also ideal for those with limited ground space, such as balcony or patio gardeners, and can be moved to accommodate changing sunlight patterns or to protect against adverse weather. Aesthetically, they provide the opportunity for seasonal interest and personal expression in garden design.

Which is the best period for transplanting container plants?

The best time for transplanting container plants is during the milder conditions of spring or early autumn. This timing allows the plants to establish their root systems in the new containers before the stress of extreme temperatures in summer or winter. When transplanting, it is important to water the plants thoroughly and place them in a location compatible with their light and temperature requirements to ensure a smooth transition.

Which plants can be combined well with container plants?

Container plants can be beautifully paired with a variety of other plant types. Ornamental grasses and ferns can add texture and interest, while flowering plants like bee-friendly and butterfly-friendly varieties contribute color and attract pollinators. Combining different container plants themselves creates a layered look, and incorporating hardy plants ensures year-round interest. Strategic placement alongside patio and balcony plants can enhance the overall design and create an inviting outdoor space.

In which soil type do most container plants grow well?

Most container plants prefer well-draining soil to prevent root rot, a mix that is rich in organic matter to provide nutrients, and has a pH that is appropriate for the specific type of plant. Using a quality potting mix designed for container plants is often the best choice as it is formulated to meet these criteria. Additionally, regular fertilization tailored to the plant's needs will encourage healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

What popular types of container plants are there?

Among the popular varieties suitable for container gardening are the Chamaerops humilis 'Vulcano' and Trachycarpus fortunei, known for their hardiness and elegant foliage. The Mandevilla sanderi, with its vibrant flowers, is another favorite. For a touch of the exotic, consider the Phoenix canariensis or Yucca rostrata. For fruit enthusiasts, the Punica granatum (pomegranate) and Fortunella margarita (kumquat) offer both ornamental appeal and edible rewards.

In what period can I best plant container plants?

The optimal period to plant container plants is typically during the spring through autumn months, when the risk of frost has passed. This allows the plants to establish themselves and acclimate to their new environment before potentially harsh winter conditions. For regions with mild winters, planting can occur year-round. It is crucial for the grower to ensure the plant is well-hydrated and that the container is of adequate size to accommodate root growth.
