We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

USDA Hardness zones in °C

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Fruit-bearing plants

Key traits of rose-hued and soft pink balcony plants

Pink flowering patio and balcony plants are a delightful addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, from compact bushes to trailing vines. They can spread widely, creating a lush display of colour. The development of these plants begins in early spring, with new shoots emerging as temperatures rise. By summer, they reach their full size, showcasing a vibrant array of blooms. The blooming months for pink flowering patio and balcony plants typically span from late spring to early autumn. Factors like climate, weather conditions, and soil quality play a crucial role in their flowering period. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil encourage more abundant blooms. The bloom colours of these plants range from soft pink to deep pink, with variations like salmon pink and peony pink. The specific shade depends on the plant variety, soil conditions, and sunlight exposure. Proper care and maintenance ensure the best colour display. While not all pink flowering patio and balcony plants are known for their fragrance, some varieties offer a subtle scent. The intensity of the fragrance can vary based on the plant's age and health. These plants can enhance biodiversity by attracting pollinators. The mature height of these plants varies, with some reaching up to 1.5 metres. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care will help them thrive. They can be combined with other plants to create a layered effect in the garden, adding depth and interest.

Pink flowering patio and balcony plants bring a touch of romance to any outdoor space. These rose-hued outdoor blooms come in various shapes and sizes, offering a delightful array of options for garden enthusiasts. The leaves of these blush pink patio flowers can vary greatly, with some having smooth, glossy surfaces, while others display a more textured appearance. Leaf colours range from deep green to lighter shades, complementing the soft pink hues of the flowers. Many of these plants are deciduous, shedding their leaves in winter, but some varieties remain evergreen, providing year-round interest.

Winter hardiness is an important factor for pink flowering terrace and balcony plants. These plants can be sensitive to frost, with temperature, wind exposure, and soil conditions all playing a role in their survival. Choosing the right species and providing protection during cold spells can help ensure their longevity. In terms of heat and drought resistance, many pink terrace flowers for romantic spaces are well-adapted, often originating from warmer climates. Features like a waxy leaf coating or deep root systems help them withstand dry conditions.

When it comes to safety, these plants are generally non-toxic, making them suitable for gardens with children and pets. They can be enjoyed without worry, adding beauty without risk. Additionally, pink flowering gardens contribute to biodiversity, attracting pollinators and providing habitats for various creatures. Good companions for pink-toned container plantings

Pink flowering patio and balcony plants can create a stunning display when combined with other plant types. Consider pairing them with silver-foliaged plants like Artemisia or Lamb's Ear. These plants provide a soft contrast to the pink hues, enhancing the overall look. For a more vibrant combination, mix pink flowering terrace and balcony plants with deep purple or blue flowers such as Salvia or Veronica. This creates a striking visual effect that draws the eye.

Examples of beautiful plant combinations include pairing blush pink patio flowers with white Alyssum or soft pink plants for patios with bright yellow Coreopsis. These combinations not only add variety but also highlight the romantic balcony blooms. The contrast between the pink and other colours can make the garden with pink colour accents stand out.

These combinations work well because they balance colour and texture. The silver foliage of plants like Artemisia complements the pink flowering gardens, while the deep purple of Salvia adds depth. Using a mix of light pink, deep pink, and coral-coloured borders and gardens can create a harmonious and inviting space. These pink terrace flowers for romantic spaces are perfect for adding a touch of elegance to any outdoor area.

Conditions for soft colour and healthy blooms

Pink flowering patio and balcony plants thrive best in full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth and bloom intensity. Too much shade can lead to fewer flowers. These plants are generally not wind-sensitive, but placing them in a sheltered spot can prevent damage to delicate blooms. The ideal soil for pink flowering patio and balcony plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth and vibrant blooms. A soil that retains some moisture but drains well is crucial. Wind and sun exposure can dry out the soil, so regular watering is important, especially in sunny spots. These plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. The pH affects nutrient availability, so testing the soil can help maintain the right balance. Pink flowering gardens and borders benefit from these conditions, creating a garden with pink colour accents. Soft pink, light pink, and deep pink hues add a romantic touch to any space. Incorporating pastel pink balcony plants into coral-coloured borders and gardens enhances the overall aesthetic, making them a perfect choice for those seeking romantic balcony blooms.

Planting and spacing tips for pink patio flowers

Pink flowering patio and balcony plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For plants with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Consider the plant type, size at planting, and growth rate. The number of plants per metre is usually listed on the product page. Proper soil preparation is key. Loosen the soil and mix in compost for nutrients. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, and water well. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks. This helps the roots establish. For romantic balcony blooms, spacing depends on the plant's mature size. Check the plant's label for guidance. Pink flowering gardens benefit from a mix of soft pink, light pink, and deep pink shades. These blush pink patio flowers add charm to any garden with pink colour accents. Whether it's peony pink or coral-coloured borders, these rose-hued outdoor blooms create a stunning display.

Care Tips for Pink Flowering Patio and Balcony Plants

Pink flowering patio and balcony plants bring a touch of elegance to any outdoor space. These plants thrive with proper care and maintenance. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching the top layer; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Ensure the water drains well to prevent root rot. Pruning is vital for healthy growth. Trim back dead or overgrown branches in early spring to encourage new blooms. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damaging the plant. Fertilising is also important. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and again in mid-summer to support vibrant blooms. For those in colder climates, winter protection is necessary. Cover plants with a frost cloth or move them to a sheltered area to prevent frost damage. If transplanting is needed, do so in early spring. Water thoroughly after moving to help the plant settle in its new location.

    • Water when the soil feels dry
    • Prune in early spring for new growth
    • Fertilise in spring and mid-summer
    • Protect from frost in winter
    • Transplant in early spring if needed
