Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

What are crimson and scarlet flowering shrub plants?

Red flowering bushes, also known as red flowering shrubs, are popular plants in many gardens. These bushes are admired for their vibrant red blooms, which can add a striking touch to any garden. Some well-known types include Chaenomeles, Ribes, and Weigela. These plants are often chosen for their ability to create bold red-flowering shrubs for dramatic gardens. Red flowering bushes are sometimes referred to as deep red ornamental bushes or bright red bush blooms. They are perfect for adding red colour accents to a garden, creating fiery red borders, or enhancing a garden with red flowering borders. The rich hues of carmine red, burgundy red, and cherry red can transform a garden into a vibrant red garden. These shrubs are used in gardens to provide a splash of colour and to create a focal point. They are ideal for those looking to design a garden with red colour accents. Whether you prefer the fiery red of a Camellia or the wine red of a Berberis, these plants can make any garden stand out. For more options, explore flowering ornamental shrubs to find the perfect match for your garden.

Key traits of deep red ornamental bush blooms

Red flowering bushes are a stunning addition to any garden. These bushes grow in various forms, often spreading wide to create a bold presence. They can reach a height of 1 to 3 metres, depending on the variety and care. The growth pattern is usually dense, providing a lush backdrop for other plants. The development of red flowering bushes begins in early spring. Buds start to form as temperatures rise, and by late spring, they burst into vibrant blooms. The full growth cycle can take several years, with the first significant blooms appearing in the second or third year. Proper soil preparation and regular watering are crucial for healthy development. Red flowering bushes typically bloom from late spring to early summer. The exact timing depends on climate and weather conditions. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil encourage earlier blooms. Older bushes tend to produce more flowers, adding to the garden's beauty. The blooms of these bushes come in various shades of red, including deep red, carmine red, and fiery red. Factors like soil pH and sunlight can influence the intensity of the colour. Different cultivars may offer unique hues, from cherry red to burgundy red. While not all red flowering bushes are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a subtle fragrance. The intensity of the scent can vary, often influenced by the age of the plant and environmental conditions. Mature red flowering bushes can reach impressive heights, making them ideal for creating red flowering borders or adding red colour accents to a garden. Their height and spread can be managed through regular pruning, ensuring they fit well within any garden design.

Red flowering bushes are a stunning addition to any garden, offering vibrant red blooms that catch the eye. The leaves of these bushes can vary greatly, with some having deep green, glossy leaves, while others may have a more matte finish. The shape of the leaves can range from oval to lance-shaped, and the texture can be smooth or slightly hairy. These bushes often retain their leaves throughout the winter, depending on the species and climate, providing year-round interest in the garden.

When it comes to winter hardiness, red flowering bushes can vary. Some are more frost-tolerant, thriving in colder temperatures, while others may need protection from harsh winter winds and freezing conditions. The soil condition and location in the garden can also affect their ability to withstand cold weather.

Many red flowering bushes are evergreen, meaning they keep their leaves all year round. This characteristic is influenced by the type of bush and the climate in which it is grown. In milder climates, these bushes are more likely to remain green throughout the year.

In terms of heat and drought resistance, red flowering bushes can be quite resilient. Their ability to withstand dry conditions is often due to their deep root systems and sometimes a waxy coating on the leaves that helps retain moisture. Originating from warmer climates, these bushes are well-suited to hot, dry summers.

Red flowering bushes are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. They can be handled safely during gardening activities, ensuring a worry-free experience.

These bushes play a vital role in supporting biodiversity. Their long-lasting blooms provide food for pollinators, while their dense foliage offers shelter and nesting sites for various garden creatures. By incorporating red flowering bushes into a garden, one can create a vibrant ecosystem that supports a wide range of wildlife.

Where to place red bushes for striking contrast

Red flowering bushes, also known as crimson flowering bushes or scarlet-coloured garden bushes, can add a vibrant touch to any garden. These fiery garden bushes are perfect for creating bold red-flowering shrubs for dramatic gardens. Here are some ways to use them effectively:

    • Border: Use red flowering bushes to create a striking red flowering border. They can provide a deep red or carmine red accent to the garden.
    • Group Planting: Plant them in groups for a vibrant red garden shrub effect. This can enhance the garden with red colour accents.
    • Solitary Planting: A single red flowering bush can serve as a focal point, offering a bold statement with its fiery red or cherry red blooms.
    • Hedge: Use them as a hedge or privacy screen. The wine red or scarlet tones can create a beautiful red-toned border and garden.
    • Pot or Planter: Place them in pots or planters for flexibility. This allows for easy movement and placement in areas needing a splash of burgundy red.

Consider these options when planning a garden with red flowering shrubs. For those looking to buy red flowering bushes, these ideas can help create a stunning and vibrant garden space.

Ideal pairings for red in garden design

Red flowering bushes can create stunning effects in a garden. These deep red ornamental bushes pair well with various plant types. Consider combining them with silver-leaved plants like Artemisia or Santolina. The contrast between the bright red bush blooms and the silvery foliage is striking. Another option is to plant them alongside grasses such as Miscanthus or Pennisetum. The movement of the grasses adds a dynamic element to the fiery garden bushes.

For a more structured look, pair red flowering shrubs with evergreen plants like Buxus or Ilex. This combination provides year-round interest and highlights the bold red-flowering shrubs for dramatic gardens. Additionally, vibrant red garden shrubs can be complemented by white or yellow flowering plants, creating a vibrant contrast in red flowering gardens.

These combinations work well because they enhance the red flowering borders, adding depth and variety. The mix of textures and colours, such as carmine red and burgundy red, creates a garden with red colour accents that is both eye-catching and harmonious. Whether using cherry red or wine red tones, these pairings ensure a garden that stands out.

Soil and site for healthy red blooms

Red flowering bushes, also known as crimson flowering bushes or scarlet-coloured garden bushes, thrive in full sun to partial shade. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily for vibrant blooms. Wind can affect these bushes, so planting them near a fence or wall can provide protection. The ideal soil for red flowering bushes is well-drained and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality, ensuring healthy growth. Regular fertilisation supports their development, especially in red flowering gardens or red-toned borders. Soil moisture is crucial for these bushes. They prefer consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Red flowering bushes favour slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Testing soil pH can guide adjustments, ensuring optimal conditions for fiery garden bushes. Incorporating these elements creates a garden with red colour accents, featuring deep red, carmine red, and burgundy red hues. These vibrant bushes add a striking touch to any garden, enhancing red flowering borders with their cherry red, wine red, and scarlet tones.

How and when to plant red flowering bushes

Red flowering bushes can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls, the best time is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The distance between red flowering bushes depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the bush, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells. This helps the deep red ornamental bushes establish well. Red flowering gardens benefit from these bright red bush blooms, adding vibrant colour accents. For fiery garden bushes, maintaining the right conditions ensures a stunning display of carmine red, burgundy red, and scarlet hues in the garden.

Maintenance for Long-Lasting Rich Colour in Red Flowering Bushes

Red flowering bushes, also known as crimson flowering bushes or scarlet-coloured garden bushes, add vibrant colour to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and maintain their stunning appearance.

    • Watering: Red flowering bushes need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if dry, water thoroughly.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth and maintain shape. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damage.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and mid-summer. This supports healthy growth and vibrant blooms.
    • Dividing: If necessary, divide bushes every few years in early spring to prevent overcrowding and promote healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, protect bushes with mulch to insulate roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water well after moving to help establish roots.
