We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Flowering month
Flowering month

The month(s) in which the plant flowers under normal (weather) conditions.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

USDA Hardness zones in °C

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Fruit-bearing plants
Fruit-bearing plants

Plants that form fruits or berries after flowering.

Hardy shrubs

Hardy shrubs are perfect for any garden, offering year-round beauty and resilience. These frost-resistant shrubs thrive in cold climates, providing structure and colour even in winter. Choose robust winter shrubs for a reliable, weather-tolerant addition to outdoor spaces.

What are hardy shrubs for cold UK gardens?

Hardy shrubs are plants that can survive in cold and challenging weather conditions. These shrubs are perfect for gardens in the UK, where the climate can be unpredictable. They are known for their ability to withstand frost and harsh winds, making them a reliable choice for any garden. Some popular hardy shrubs include Hydrangea, Rosa, Berberis, Forsythia, and Spiraea. These plants are not only tough but also add beauty to the garden with their flowers and foliage. Hardy shrubs are also called weather-tolerant ornamental shrubs or winterproof garden shrubs. These names highlight their ability to thrive in different weather conditions, including cold winters. They are often chosen for their resilience and low maintenance needs. In the garden, hardy shrubs are used to create structure and provide year-round interest. They can be planted as borders, hedges, or focal points. Their frost-resistant nature makes them ideal for gardens that experience cold temperatures. By choosing robust winter shrubs, gardeners can ensure their outdoor spaces remain attractive throughout the year.

Traits of cold-hardy flowering and evergreen shrubs

Hardy shrubs, also known as frost-resistant shrubs or cold-hardy garden bushes, are perfect for gardens in colder climates. These robust winter shrubs can grow in various forms, from compact bushes to taller, spreading plants. They adapt well to different garden spaces, providing structure and interest throughout the year. The development of hardy shrubs begins in early spring when new growth appears. As the season progresses, these shrubs continue to grow, reaching their mature size by late summer. The growth rate can vary depending on the specific type and environmental conditions. Hardy shrubs typically bloom in late spring to early summer. The exact blooming period can be influenced by factors such as climate, weather conditions, and soil preparation. Proper care and maintenance, like regular watering and pruning, can also affect the flowering time. The bloom colours of hardy shrubs range from whites and pinks to vibrant reds and purples. The specific hue depends on the species and cultivar, as well as soil quality and light exposure. Climate and care also play a role in the intensity and duration of the blooms. While not all hardy shrubs are known for their fragrance, some varieties do offer a pleasant scent. This can be influenced by the type of shrub, the health of the plant, and the time of year. Fragrant shrubs can enhance the biodiversity of a garden by attracting pollinators. Mature hardy shrubs can reach heights of 1 to 3 metres, depending on the species and growing conditions. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care will ensure these shrubs thrive, offering a reliable presence in the garden. For those looking to buy hardy shrubs, consider their mature size and how they fit into the overall garden design.

Hardy shrubs are a great choice for gardens, especially in colder climates. These weather-tolerant ornamental shrubs have leaves that vary in shape, colour, and texture. Some have glossy green leaves, while others may have a more matte finish. The structure of the leaves can help them withstand harsh weather, and many hardy shrubs keep their leaves throughout winter, adding colour to the garden year-round. The winter hardiness of hardy shrubs depends on several factors. They are frost-resistant garden shrubs that can survive low temperatures and periods of frost. The choice of shrub, the amount of wind, and soil conditions all play a role in their ability to withstand cold. Most hardy shrubs are evergreen, meaning they do not lose their leaves in winter. This makes them reliable winter bushes for maintaining garden structure. The climate and location in the garden can affect their evergreen nature. In terms of heat and drought resistance, hardy shrubs are quite robust. Their origin, leaf structure, and deep root systems help them survive dry conditions. A waxy coating or hair on the leaves can reduce water loss, making them climate-resilient shrubs. Hardy shrubs are generally safe for gardens with children and pets. They are not toxic and can be handled safely during gardening. These shrubs also support biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for wildlife, helping to create a balanced ecosystem. By choosing winterproof garden shrubs, gardens can become more resistant to diseases and pests, offering a haven for various species.

Soil and site tips for hardy garden success

Hardy shrubs thrive in various light conditions, from full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth, so consider the garden's exposure. These shrubs are generally wind-resistant, but in very windy areas, a windbreak can help protect them. The ideal soil for hardy shrubs is well-drained and rich in nutrients. Regular fertilisation supports their growth. A loamy soil type is often best, as it retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Soil moisture is crucial for hardy shrubs. They prefer consistent moisture levels, which can be influenced by wind, sun, and soil type. Ensure the soil is neither too dry nor too wet. Hardy shrubs favour a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Soil pH can be affected by rainfall and the type of soil. Regular testing helps maintain the right balance. These frost-resistant shrubs are perfect for gardens needing robust winter shrubs. They are reliable winter bushes that withstand cold conditions, making them ideal for outdoor gardens.

When and how to plant tough shrub varieties

Hardy shrubs are best planted in spring or autumn, especially when they come with a root ball. However, those delivered in pots can be planted year-round, avoiding frost periods. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The plant spacing for hardy shrubs depends on the type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the Heijnen product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for hardy shrubs. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and mix compost into the soil. When planting hardy shrubs, place them at the same depth as in the pot. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially during dry spells. This ensures the shrubs establish well and thrive in the garden. Hardy shrubs, also known as weather-tolerant ornamental shrubs or winterproof garden shrubs, are reliable choices for creating a robust winter garden. They are frost-resistant and can withstand harsh outdoor conditions, making them ideal for any garden setting.

    Maintenance for Resilient Hardy Shrubs

Hardy shrubs, also known as frost-resistant shrubs or cold-hardy garden bushes, are perfect for gardens facing harsh weather. Proper care ensures they thrive.

    • Watering: Hardy shrubs need regular watering, especially in dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the soil; if dry, water deeply.
    • Pruning: Prune hardy shrubs in late winter or early spring. This encourages new growth and maintains shape. Use clean, sharp tools for best results.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. This supports growth and flowering. Follow package instructions for quantity.
    • Winter Protection: While hardy, some shrubs benefit from mulch around the base to protect roots from extreme cold.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant hardy shrubs in early spring or autumn. Water well after moving to reduce stress.
    • Dividing: Some hardy shrubs can be divided every few years to promote health and manage size. Do this in spring or autumn.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding more robust winter shrubs. It's easy to buy hardy shrubs online or at local nurseries. These reliable winter bushes are a great addition to any outdoor space, providing beauty and resilience throughout the year.
