Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Root type

A plant or tree can be delivered in a pot, with a root ball or with bare roots.

  • Pot: the advantage of plants grown in pots is that they can be planted all year round, with the exception of periods of frost. After planting, both the root system and the visible, above-ground parts of the plant/tree will continue to grow immediately, provided temperatures are high enough.
  • Root ball: plants and trees with (wired) root balls can be planted roughly between October and April, depending on the weather. During these months, the plants are dormant and at their least vulnerable, which is ideal for planting. Because the plants are freshly uprooted (dug up) at the growers, the root system may be somewhat damaged. Once planted, the plant/tree will first form new roots and will then continue to grow above ground.
  • Bare roots: plants and trees delivered with bare roots can be planted roughly between October and April, depending on the weather. During these months, the plants are dormant and at their least vulnerable, which is ideal for planting. Because the plants are freshly uprooted (dug up) at the growers, the root system may be somewhat damaged. Once planted, the plant/tree will first form new roots and will then continue to grow above ground. Because there is no sand on the roots, the plants are lightweight and therefore easy to carry.
Height at time of delivery (cm)

Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Width at time of delivery (cm)
Width at time of delivery (cm)

Our plants can be ordered in different sizes. By width on delivery (cm), we mean the approximate width of the plant in centimetres when we deliver it to you.

The number of centimetres indicated refers to the widest part of the plant. It may not be as wide in other places, since it is a natural product and does not have standard dimensions.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Application
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Flowering month
Flowering month

The month(s) in which the plant flowers under normal (weather) conditions.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Buy burglar-resistant hedge

Intrusion-resistant hedge plants are an excellent choice for enhancing garden security. These security hedges not only add beauty but also serve as a burglar-deterrent hedge. Thorny security plants, like thorny hedges, create a protective garden boundary. Curious about how these plants can secure your property? Discover how a burglar bush can act as a natural barrier. Tall hedges and low hedges can both serve as effective boundary hedges, providing privacy and blocking unwanted views. Consider using a hedge with thorns to deter trespassers. Explore the benefits of an impenetrable hedge as a deterrent hedge. For more options, check out hedge plants that can transform your garden into a secure haven.

Intruder Proof Hedging: What is a Security Hedge and How Does it Protect?

Intrusion-resistant hedge plants, also known as security hedges, are a natural way to protect gardens. These hedges are dense and often have thorns, making them difficult to penetrate. Common types include Berberis, Pyracantha, and Crataegus. These plants act as a barrier, keeping unwanted visitors out. Security hedges are sometimes called defensive hedging or protective hedges. They serve as a deterrent, providing privacy and marking boundaries. Tall hedges can hide unsightly objects and create a boundary with neighbours. In gardens, security hedges are used to block entry and enhance privacy. Thorny hedges, like those with Ribes and Mahonia, are popular for their natural security features. They are considered the best security hedges for home protection. These hedges not only add beauty but also serve as a hedge against trespassers. Using thorny plants for natural security is an effective way to create a protective garden hedge. A hedge with thorns acts as a natural barrier, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a deterrent hedge.

Traits of burglar-deterrent and defensive hedge plants

Intrusion-resistant hedge plants are ideal for creating a secure garden boundary. These plants grow densely, forming a thick barrier that can deter intruders. They spread widely, making them perfect for blocking hedges and creating a boundary with neighbours. The growth of these hedges is robust, with thorny branches that add an extra layer of protection. The development of these security hedges begins in early spring. They grow rapidly, reaching maturity in a few years. Regular pruning helps maintain their shape and encourages dense growth, making them more effective as a deterrent hedge. Security hedges typically bloom in late spring to early summer. The blooming period can be influenced by climate, temperature, and soil conditions. Proper care and ground preparation are essential for healthy blooms. The flowers of thorny security plants can vary in colour, often depending on the species and cultivar. Soil quality, light exposure, and climate also play a role in the vibrancy of the blooms. Regular maintenance ensures the best display of colours. Some intrusion-resistant hedge plants are known for their strong scent, which can enhance the garden's biodiversity. The intensity of the fragrance can depend on the plant's age and health. Mature security hedges can reach impressive heights, providing privacy and acting as a natural barrier. The height can be influenced by the choice of plant, care, and placement. These tall hedges are excellent for hiding unsightly objects and creating a protective garden hedge.

Intrusion-resistant hedge plants are a great choice for creating a security hedge in the garden. These plants often have thorny leaves, which act as a natural deterrent against intruders. The leaf shape can vary, but many have sharp edges or spines. Leaf colour ranges from deep green to a more muted shade, depending on the species. The structure of the leaves is often dense, providing an effective barrier. Some of these plants are evergreen, meaning they keep their leaves throughout winter, while others may lose their leaves depending on the climate and species choice.

Winter hardiness is an important factor for security hedges. These plants need to withstand cold temperatures and frost. The level of frost sensitivity can depend on the type of plant, the duration of frost, and the amount of wind exposure. A well-drained soil can also help improve winter hardiness. Many intrusion-resistant hedge plants are evergreen, providing year-round protection. However, some may shed leaves annually, influenced by the local climate and specific plant type.

Heat and drought resistance are also crucial for these hedges. Originating from regions with hot climates, many of these plants have adapted to withstand high temperatures and dry conditions. Features like a waxy leaf coating or deep root systems help them conserve water. In terms of safety, these plants are generally non-toxic when used in a garden setting, making them safe for children and pets.

Security hedges contribute to biodiversity by offering shelter and food for wildlife. They can mimic natural habitats, supporting a balanced ecosystem. These hedges can also enhance garden resilience against pests and diseases, providing a natural barrier and promoting a healthy environment.

Best ways to use thorny hedging for privacy and safety

Security hedges, also known as burglar-deterrent hedges or thorny security plants, are excellent for enhancing garden security. These intrusion-resistant hedge plants not only provide privacy but also act as a natural barrier against trespassers. Here are some effective ways to use these protective garden hedges:

  • Border: Use thorny hedges as a border edge to define the garden boundary and deter intruders.
  • Boundary hedge: Plant tall hedges along the boundary with neighbours to ensure privacy and security.
  • Block hedges: Create block hedges to hide unsightly objects and enhance the garden's appearance.
  • Impenetrable hedge plants: Choose thorn bushes for protection to form an impenetrable hedge against trespassers.
  • Defensive hedge plants: Use these plants as a deterrent hedge to keep burglars at bay.
For those looking to buy intrusion-resistant hedge plants, consider options that offer both aesthetic appeal and security. These hedges are not only functional but also add a touch of nature to the garden. By selecting the best security hedges for home protection, one can enjoy peace of mind knowing the garden is safe and secure.

Companion Planting for Security-Focused Gardens

Intrusion-resistant hedge plants can be combined with various plant types to enhance garden security. Thorny hedges, such as hawthorn or blackthorn, work well with defensive hedging plants like holly or pyracantha. These protective garden hedges create a dense barrier, making it difficult for intruders to pass through. For a beautiful yet secure garden, consider pairing thorny plants for natural security with tall hedges like yew or beech. These combinations not only provide a strong boundary hedge but also add height and privacy. Low hedges, such as boxwood, can be used as a border edge to hide unsightly objects or define a garden boundary. The combination of these plants is effective because they offer both aesthetic appeal and practical security. Thorn bushes for protection, like rose or barberry, add colour and texture while serving as a deterrent hedge. An impenetrable hedge plant mix ensures a boundary with neighbours that is both attractive and secure. By using a mix of hedge as a natural barrier, the garden becomes a safe haven, blocking hedges against trespassers and providing peace of mind.

Site and soil for optimum protective hedge growth

Intrusion-resistant hedge plants, like security hedges, need specific light conditions to thrive. These plants prefer full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth and density, which is crucial for creating an effective burglar-deterrent hedge. Wind can be a concern for these hedges. To protect them, consider planting in a sheltered spot or using windbreaks. The ideal soil for thorny security plants is well-drained and fertile. A mix of loam and sand is often best. Regular fertilisation helps maintain healthy growth, ensuring the hedge remains dense and impenetrable. Soil moisture is also important. These hedges need consistent moisture, but the soil should not be waterlogged. Wind and sun exposure can dry out the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. The pH level of the soil should be slightly acidic to neutral. This range supports the growth of thorny hedges, making them effective as a natural barrier. Adjusting the pH with lime or sulphur can optimise conditions. By considering these factors, a protective garden hedge can effectively serve as a deterrent hedge, providing privacy and security.

Planting a security hedge – safe and structured

Intrusion-resistant hedge plants are best planted in spring or autumn. These times offer ideal conditions for root establishment. However, plants in pots can be planted year-round, except during frost. When planting, consider the type of plant, its size, and growth rate. For example, thorny hedges like a protective hedge need space to grow. The number of plants per metre is usually listed on the product page. Proper ground preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. Dig a trench twice the width of the root ball. Planting instructions for a security hedge include placing the plant at the same depth as in the pot. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells. This helps the hedge establish quickly. A defensive hedging not only provides privacy but also acts as a deterrent hedge against trespassers. A well-maintained hedge with thorns can serve as a natural barrier, offering both beauty and security to any garden boundary.

Maintenance Tips for Burglar Bush

Intrusion-resistant hedge plants are essential for creating a secure garden boundary. Proper care ensures these security hedges remain effective.

  • Regular pruning is crucial for maintaining the shape and density of the hedge. Prune during late winter or early spring using sharp shears to encourage new growth and enhance the hedge's deterrent qualities.
  • Fertilising helps keep the hedge healthy. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and again in late summer to promote robust growth.
  • Watering is vital, especially during dry spells. Water deeply once a week, ensuring the soil is moist but not waterlogged.
  • Dividing and replanting may be necessary for some hedge types. Do this every few years in early spring to prevent overcrowding and maintain vigour.
  • Winter protection is important for young or sensitive plants. Use mulch to insulate roots and protect against frost.
  • Transplanting should be done in early spring or autumn. Water thoroughly after moving to help the hedge establish in its new location.
For those looking to enhance their garden's security, consider investing in intrusion-resistant hedge plants to create a natural barrier against trespassers. These tall hedges not only provide privacy but also act as a deterrent hedge, making them an excellent choice for any garden boundary.

Aesthetic value of thorny yet beautiful hedge lines

Security hedges, also known as intrusion-resistant hedge plants, offer both beauty and protection for gardens. These defensive hedging options are not only practical but also visually appealing. The flowers of thorny hedges can add a splash of colour, while their fragrance enhances the garden's atmosphere. The leaves of protective hedges vary in colour and texture, providing a lush backdrop throughout the year. These hedges are particularly beneficial for wildlife, serving as a habitat and food source for birds and insects. The dense growth of tall hedges offers a safe haven for small creatures, while the thorny structure deters intruders. In autumn, the foliage of these hedges often changes colour, adding seasonal interest to the garden. During winter, the structure of these hedges remains strong, even when covered in frost, maintaining their deterrent effect. The movement of the leaves in the wind adds a dynamic element to the garden, making these hedges a versatile choice. For those looking to buy intrusion-resistant hedge plants, consider options that provide both security and aesthetic value. These hedges not only block hedges and hide unsightly objects but also create a natural barrier against trespassers.
