Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

They are known for their rapid growth and ability to create a lush carpet in a short time. Popular types include Hedera, Lysimachia, Ajuga, Vinca, and Lamium. These plants are also called speedy creepers or rapid carpet-forming plants. They are perfect for gardeners looking for quick ground covers or rapid spreaders. Fast-growing ground covers are used to provide instant cover in gardens. They help in reducing soil erosion and can be used to cover slopes or difficult areas. These plants are also great for adding texture and colour to the garden. Some gardeners use them as an alternative to grass, especially in shady areas where grass struggles to grow. For those interested in creating a diverse garden, consider combining these ground covers with hedge plants for a layered effect. Fast-spreading ground covers for empty spaces are a practical choice for anyone wanting a vibrant and low-maintenance garden.

Characteristics of speedy and efficient spreaders

Fast-growing ground covers are perfect for filling empty spaces in the garden quickly. These rapid-spreading ground plants have a unique growth pattern. They spread horizontally, covering large areas with their foliage. This makes them ideal for quick coverage ground plants, providing a lush carpet of greenery. The development of fast-growing ground covers is fascinating. They start with small shoots that rapidly expand, reaching maturity in a short time. These plants are known for their vigorous growth habit, making them excellent for groundcovers with strong growth. Fast-growing ground covers bloom in various months, depending on the species and climate. Factors like temperature, soil preparation, and care influence their blooming period. In mild climates, they may bloom earlier, while in cooler areas, they might take longer. The bloom colours of these ground covers vary widely. They can range from whites and yellows to vibrant reds and purples. The type of soil, light conditions, and plant variety all play a role in determining the bloom colour. Some fast-growing ground covers are known for their fragrance. The scent can come from the leaves, stems, or flowers, adding an aromatic touch to the garden. The intensity of the fragrance depends on the plant species and environmental conditions. The mature height of these groundcovers is generally low, making them perfect for layering in the garden. They provide excellent coverage without obstructing sightlines, making them a popular choice for gardeners looking to buy fast-growing ground covers.

Fast-growing ground covers, also known as speedy creepers or rapid carpet-forming plants, are ideal for quickly filling empty spaces in the garden. These plants have a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Some have small, rounded leaves, while others boast elongated or serrated forms. Leaf colours can range from deep green to variegated patterns, adding visual interest. The texture of the leaves can be smooth or slightly hairy, which can affect their ability to retain moisture and withstand different weather conditions. Most fast-growing ground covers are evergreen, meaning they retain their leaves throughout the winter, providing year-round coverage. However, some may lose their leaves in colder climates, depending on the species and environmental factors like wind and soil conditions.

These plants are generally hardy, but their frost sensitivity can vary. Factors such as temperature, duration of frost, and wind exposure play a role in their survival. In terms of heat and drought resistance, many fast-growing ground covers are well-adapted due to their origins in arid regions. Their leaf structure, often with a waxy coating or fine hairs, helps reduce water loss. A deep root system allows them to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making them resilient in dry conditions.

Fast-growing ground covers are typically non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute positively to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. Their rapid growth helps create a balanced ecosystem, supporting the garden's resistance to diseases and pests. These plants are excellent for those seeking fast-spreading ground covers for empty spaces, offering both aesthetic appeal and ecological benefits.

Combining rapid spreaders with long-term plants

Fast-growing ground covers, also known as speedy creepers or rapid carpet-forming plants, are perfect for filling empty spaces in the garden quickly. These rapid spreaders can be combined with long-term plants to create a balanced and beautiful garden. For instance, pairing fast-spreading ground covers with taller perennials like ornamental grasses or shrubs can add height and texture. Quick ground covers such as creeping thyme or ajuga can be planted alongside these taller plants to provide a lush, green base. Another great combination is using fast-growing ground cover plants with spring bulbs. As the bulbs bloom, the ground covers provide a green backdrop, enhancing the vibrant colours of the flowers. Soil and exposure for quick-growing success

Fast-growing ground covers thrive in various light conditions, but most prefer full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth rate and coverage. These plants are generally not wind-sensitive, but providing a windbreak can help protect them in exposed areas. The ideal soil for fast-growing ground covers is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Regular fertilisation supports their rapid spread. Ensuring the soil is not compacted helps these rapid-spreading ground plants establish quickly. Soil moisture is crucial for quick coverage ground plants. They need consistent moisture, especially in sunny or windy spots. A balance between moisture and drainage is key to their success. Fast-growing ground cover plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can enhance their growth. These fast-spreading groundcovers are perfect for quickly expanding covers in the garden. With the right conditions, they become vigorous ground spreaders, providing instant cover and strong growth habit.

How and when to plant speedily spreading plants

Fast-growing ground covers, also known as speedy creepers or rapid carpet-forming plants, can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. Those with roots or clumps are best planted in spring or autumn. The planting distance for these rapid spreaders depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth speed. Information on the number of plants per metre is usually found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for fast-spreading groundcovers. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly until established. These quick ground covers need consistent moisture to thrive and provide instant cover. With the right care, these vigorous ground spreaders will quickly expand, offering fast coverage for any garden.

Maintenance for Fast Growing Ground Cover Plants

Fast-growing ground covers are perfect for quickly filling empty spaces in the garden. These rapid-spreading ground plants need proper care to thrive. Regular maintenance helps control their fast growth and keeps them healthy.

    • Watering: Fast-growing ground covers need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture to know when to water. Water deeply but less frequently to encourage deep root growth.
    • Pruning: Pruning helps manage the spread of these quick coverage ground plants. Trim them back in early spring to promote healthy growth. Use sharp tools to avoid damaging the plants.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support vigorous growth. Follow the recommended amount to avoid over-fertilising, which can harm the plants.
    • Dividing: Some fast-spreading groundcovers benefit from dividing every few years. This helps rejuvenate the plants and prevents overcrowding. Divide in early spring or autumn for best results.
    • Winter Protection: In colder areas, provide a layer of mulch to protect the roots from frost. This helps ensure the plants survive the winter months.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant fast-growing ground covers in early spring. Water well after moving to help them establish in their new location.
For those looking to buy fast-growing ground covers, consider their growth habits and maintenance needs. These groundcovers with strong growth habits can transform a garden quickly, providing instant cover and beauty.
