We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application

Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

USDA Hardness zones in °C

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

    What are Blue Flowering Bushes?

Blue flowering bushes are a popular choice for adding a splash of colour to any garden. These bushes, also known as blue-toned flowering bushes or blue-blooming garden bushes, come in various shades like indigo blue, cobalt blue, and lavender blue. They are perfect for creating blue flowering gardens or blue flowering borders, offering a serene and calming effect. Common types of blue flowering bushes include Caryopteris, Ceanothus, and Buddleja. These shrubs are often used in gardens with blue colour accents, providing a striking contrast against green foliage. Blue flowering bushes are ideal for those looking to design ocean blue borders and gardens. These shrubs are not only visually appealing but also versatile. They can be used as blue-flowered ornamental shrubs or as part of a cool garden theme. For those interested in flowering ornamental shrubs, blue flowering bushes are a great option. They thrive in various conditions and can be a stunning addition to any garden landscape.

Features of blue-toned and soft blue flowering shrubs

Blue flowering bushes, also known as sky-blue garden bushes or azure blossom bushes, are a stunning addition to any garden. These shrubs grow in various forms, often spreading wide to create a lush appearance. They can reach different heights, depending on the species and care provided. The development of blue flowering bushes begins in early spring when new shoots appear. As the season progresses, these shrubs grow steadily, reaching their full size by late summer. The growth rate can vary based on climate, soil quality, and care. Blue flowering bushes typically bloom from late spring to early summer. The exact timing depends on factors like weather conditions, temperature, and the age of the plant. Proper soil preparation and regular care can enhance blooming. The blooms of blue flowering bushes come in a range of shades, including indigo blue, cobalt blue, light blue, and lavender blue. The specific colour can be influenced by the type of shrub, soil conditions, and sunlight exposure. These shrubs are not particularly known for their fragrance, but some varieties may have a mild scent. The intensity of the aroma can depend on the plant's age and the surrounding biodiversity. When fully grown, blue flowering bushes can vary in height, often reaching between 1 to 3 metres. The choice of location and care can affect their size, making them suitable for creating layered garden designs or as part of a blue flowering border.

Blue flowering bushes are a stunning addition to any garden, offering a range of shades from indigo blue to lavender blue. The leaves of these blue-toned flowering bushes can vary greatly. Some have glossy, dark green leaves, while others may have a lighter, more matte finish. The shape can range from oval to lance-shaped, and the texture might be smooth or slightly hairy, depending on the species. In winter, many blue-blooming garden bushes retain their leaves, providing year-round interest, though some may shed them in colder climates.

When it comes to winter hardiness, blue flowering shrubs can be quite resilient. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost and strong winds can be challenging. Planting in a sheltered spot with well-drained soil can help them thrive. These shrubs are often evergreen, maintaining their foliage throughout the year, which is ideal for creating blue flowering gardens that remain vibrant even in winter.

In terms of heat and drought resistance, blue-flowered ornamental shrubs are generally hardy. Their origin often dictates their ability to withstand dry conditions. Many have deep root systems and a waxy leaf coating that helps conserve moisture, making them suitable for gardens with blue colour accents in warmer climates.

Regarding safety, blue flowering bushes are typically non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute to biodiversity by attracting pollinators and providing shelter for wildlife. These shrubs can enhance the ecosystem, offering food and nesting sites, and are perfect for creating ocean blue borders and gardens that support local fauna.

Where to use blue bushes in garden design

Blue flowering bushes, also known as sky-blue garden bushes or azure blossom bushes, can add a calming effect to any garden. These blue garden shrubs are perfect for creating a serene atmosphere. Here are some ways to use them in your garden:

    • Border: Use blue flowering borders to define garden edges with indigo blue or cobalt blue hues.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a striking effect, using light blue and dark blue shades.
    • Solitary: Place a single bush as a focal point with lavender blue blossoms.
    • Hedge: Create a hedge with sapphire blue or ocean blue bushes for privacy.
    • Pot or Planter: Use in pots for patios or balconies, adding blue colour accents.
    • Underplanting: Combine with taller plants for a layered look in blue flowering gardens.
    • Windbreak: Use as a windscreen with dense blue-flowered ornamental shrubs.
    • Shade Garden: Ideal for cool and calming gardens with blue flowering shrubs.

Consider these options when planning a garden with blue colour accents. For those looking to buy blue flowering bushes, these ideas can inspire a beautiful and tranquil garden design.

Pairings with white, yellow or purple tones

Blue flowering bushes can create stunning combinations in the garden. These blue-toned flowering bushes pair beautifully with white, yellow, or purple plants. For a striking effect, consider combining blue flowering shrubs with white daisies or yellow marigolds. The contrast of blue and white or yellow adds brightness and cheer to any garden. Another lovely combination is blue-blooming garden bushes with purple lavender or lilacs. This pairing creates a harmonious and calming atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing garden space. Blue garden shrubs also work well with silver foliage plants like dusty miller, adding texture and interest to the garden. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also enhance the overall theme of blue flowering gardens. The use of blue flowering borders with complementary colours like white, yellow, and purple can highlight the beauty of blue-flowered ornamental shrubs. Whether aiming for indigo blue, cobalt blue, or light blue accents, these pairings can transform a garden into a serene and inviting space.

Soil and light needs for blue blooms

Blue flowering bushes thrive in full sun to partial shade. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily for vibrant blooms. Factors like nearby trees or buildings can affect light availability. These bushes are moderately wind-sensitive. Planting them near a fence or wall can help reduce wind impact. The ideal soil for blue flowering bushes is well-drained and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they allow roots to breathe. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth. Moisture levels are crucial; too much wind or sun can dry the soil quickly. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Blue flowering bushes prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting pH can enhance growth. These bushes add stunning blue accents to gardens, with shades like indigo blue, cobalt blue, and lavender blue. They are perfect for blue flowering gardens and borders, creating a serene atmosphere with their azure blossoms.

When to plant blue flowering bush varieties

Blue flowering bushes can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls or bare roots, the best time is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, climate, and garden location play a role in successful planting. The distance between blue flowering bushes depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for blue flowering bushes. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Before planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the bush in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the ground. After planting, water thoroughly to help the roots establish. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks. Blue flowering bushes add stunning blue colour accents to gardens, creating beautiful blue flowering borders and gardens with shades like indigo blue, cobalt blue, and lavender blue.

Care Tips for Strong Blue Colour and Shape in Blue Flowering Bushes

Blue flowering bushes add a stunning touch to any garden. Proper care ensures vibrant blooms. Here are some tips:

    • Watering: Blue flowering bushes need regular watering, especially in dry periods. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer. Water deeply once a week.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damage.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Follow package instructions for quantity. Fertilise again in mid-summer for continuous blooms.
    • Dividing: If bushes become too large, divide them in early spring. This promotes healthy growth and prevents overcrowding.
    • Winter Protection: In colder areas, mulch around the base to protect roots from frost. Remove mulch in spring.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring or autumn. Water well after transplanting and keep soil moist until established.

For those looking to enhance their garden with blue flowering bushes, consider adding sky-blue garden bushes or azure blossom bushes for a variety of blue shades. These bushes can create beautiful blue flowering gardens and borders, adding indigo blue, cobalt blue, and even lavender blue accents.
