We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Flowering month
Flowering month

The month(s) in which the plant flowers under normal (weather) conditions.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

USDA Hardness zones in °C

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Fruit-bearing plants
Fruit-bearing plants

Plants that form fruits or berries after flowering.

Semi-shade shrubs

Partial shade shrubs thrive in areas with limited sunlight, offering vibrant foliage and seasonal blooms. Ideal for gardens with dappled light, these semi-shade tolerant shrubs enhance beauty and provide structure. Perfect for spots with morning sun or filtered light, they add charm effortlessly.

What Defines a Semi-Shade Ornamental Shrub?

Partial shade shrubs are plants that thrive in areas with limited sunlight. These shrubs are perfect for gardens that receive morning sun or filtered light throughout the day. They are also known as part-shade ornamental bushes or light-shade shrubs. These terms highlight their ability to grow in less sunny spots, making them ideal for semi-shaded areas in the garden. Partial shade shrubs are used to add beauty and structure to gardens with dappled light. They can be flowering shrubs for dappled light, providing colour and interest even in less sunny spots. Popular genera like Skimmia, Camellia, Mahonia, Viburnum, and Sarcococca are excellent choices for these conditions. These shrubs are not only ornamental but also practical, as they can fill spaces where other plants might struggle. Choosing the best shrubs for partial shade gardens can enhance the overall look of a garden. They are perfect for creating a lush environment in areas with partial sun. Whether used as garden shrubs for semi-shaded spots or as part-sun shrubs, they offer versatility and charm to any outdoor space.

Traits of part-shade and dappled-light garden bushes

Partial shade shrubs, also known as semi-shade tolerant shrubs or dappled light garden shrubs, are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These shrubs grow in various forms, often spreading wide to capture available light. They adapt well to filtered light conditions, making them ideal for garden edges or spots with morning sun. The development of these shrubs begins in early spring, with new shoots emerging as temperatures rise. As the season progresses, they grow steadily, reaching maturity by late summer. The growth rate can vary depending on soil quality and care. Partial shade shrubs typically bloom in late spring to early summer. The exact timing depends on climate, weather conditions, and the shrub's age. Proper soil preparation and regular care enhance blooming. The flowers of these shrubs come in a range of colours, influenced by the species and cultivar. Soil type, light exposure, and climate also play a role in determining the vibrancy of the blooms. While not all partial shade shrubs are known for their fragrance, some do offer a pleasant scent. This can be affected by the plant's age, the intensity of the bloom, and environmental factors. Mature partial shade shrubs can vary in height, often reaching between 1 to 3 metres. Their height is influenced by the planting location, care, and potential combinations with other garden plants. These shrubs are excellent for creating layered garden designs and enhancing visual interest.

Partial shade shrubs, also known as part-shade ornamental bushes or light-shade shrubs, have unique leaf characteristics. The leaves often have a broad shape to capture limited sunlight. Colours range from deep green to variegated patterns, depending on the species. The texture can be smooth or slightly hairy, aiding in moisture retention. These shrubs may lose leaves in winter, influenced by species and climate conditions. Winter hardiness varies among shrubs for partial shade. Factors like temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure affect their survival. Some are more frost-tolerant, while others need protection. Soil conditions also play a role; well-drained soil helps prevent root damage during cold spells. Many partial shade shrubs are evergreen, retaining leaves year-round, while others shed annually. This depends on species, climate, and location. Evergreen varieties are ideal for maintaining garden structure in winter. Heat and drought resistance in part-shade shrubs depend on origin and leaf structure. A waxy coating or fine hairs can reduce water loss. Deep root systems help access moisture, making them suitable for drier conditions. Wind protection and soil moisture are crucial for their health. Partial shade shrubs are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no risk, but it's wise to research specific species for any potential hazards. These shrubs enhance biodiversity by providing food and shelter for wildlife. They support pollinators with long-lasting blooms and mimic natural habitats, promoting ecosystem balance. This increases garden resilience against pests and diseases, making them a valuable addition to any garden.

Where to plant shrubs in morning or filtered light

Partial shade shrubs, also known as semi-shade tolerant shrubs or dappled light garden shrubs, are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These shrubs thrive in areas with morning sun or filtered light, making them ideal for various garden applications. Here are some ways to incorporate these versatile plants into your garden:

    • Use partial shade shrubs in borders to create lush, green edges that thrive in semi-shaded areas.
    • Group these shrubs together for a stunning display in areas with dappled light, enhancing the garden's visual appeal.
    • Plant them as solitary specimens to add interest and structure to parts of the garden that receive morning sun.
    • Create a natural hedge or boundary with these shrubs, providing privacy and a beautiful backdrop.
    • Incorporate them into pots or planters for patios or balconies that receive partial sun, adding greenery to smaller spaces.
    • Use them as underplanting beneath taller trees, where they can enjoy the filtered light.
    • Choose flowering shrubs for dappled light to add colour and attract pollinators to the garden.

When planning a garden, consider buying partial shade shrubs to ensure a thriving and vibrant landscape. These shrubs are not only ornamental but also adaptable, making them a valuable addition to any garden with semi-shaded spots.

Best partners for soft-shade garden designs

Partial shade shrubs can be beautifully combined with various plant types to create a stunning garden. These shrubs thrive in areas with dappled light, making them perfect companions for ferns and hostas. Ferns, with their delicate fronds, add a lush texture that complements the structure of part-shade ornamental bushes. Hostas, known for their broad leaves, provide a contrasting backdrop that highlights the flowering shrubs for dappled light. For a more vibrant display, consider pairing light-shade shrubs with astilbes. Astilbes offer feathery plumes in shades of pink, red, and white, which can enhance the visual appeal of shrubs for partial shade. Another excellent combination is with heucheras, whose colourful foliage can add depth and interest to garden shrubs for semi-shaded spots. These combinations work well because they all thrive in similar conditions, such as filtered light and partial sun. The mix of textures and colours creates a dynamic and harmonious garden design. By choosing the best shrubs for partial shade gardens, along with complementary plants, a garden can be transformed into a serene and inviting space.

Site and soil for balanced shade conditions

Partial shade shrubs thrive in areas with filtered light, making them ideal for gardens with dappled sunlight. These semi-shade tolerant shrubs prefer morning sun and can handle light shade in the afternoon. Factors like nearby trees or buildings can influence the amount of light they receive. Wind sensitivity is a consideration for these shrubs. Planting them near a fence or wall can provide protection from strong winds, ensuring they remain healthy and robust. The ideal soil for shrubs for partial shade is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality, promoting growth. Regular fertilisation helps maintain nutrient levels, supporting ornamental shrubs for morning sun. Soil moisture is crucial for part-sun shrubs. They prefer consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged. Wind and sun exposure can affect moisture levels, so mulching can help retain soil moisture. Partial shade shrubs thrive in slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Testing soil pH and adjusting with lime or sulphur can create optimal conditions for these garden shrubs for semi-shaded spots. By understanding these needs, shrubs for shade edges can flourish, adding beauty to any garden.

When to plant shrubs in partial shade

Partial shade shrubs can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, climate, and garden location play a role in successful planting. The distance between shrubs depends on the type, size at planting, and growth rate. Generally, the number of plants per metre is specified on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Loosen the soil and mix in organic matter to improve drainage and nutrients. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the shrub at the same depth as in the pot. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells. This ensures the shrubs establish well in their new environment. Light-shade shrubs, part-shade ornamental bushes, and other shrubs for partial shade thrive with these care tips. They are ideal for gardens with filtered light or semi-shaded spots, adding beauty and structure.

Maintenance for Healthy Foliage and Flower in Partial Shade Shrubs

Partial shade shrubs, also known as semi-shade tolerant shrubs or dappled light garden shrubs, thrive in areas with limited sunlight. Proper care ensures their health and beauty.

    • Watering: Partial shade shrubs need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage growth and shape. Use clean, sharp tools to remove dead or crossing branches.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Follow package instructions for quantity and frequency to avoid over-fertilising.
    • Dividing: If applicable, divide shrubs every few years in early spring to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base to protect roots from frost. In severe climates, consider covering with burlap.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring or autumn. Water well before and after moving to reduce stress.
