Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Hardy perennials, also called winterproof perennials, are frost-resistant and can thrive in severe winters. Popular examples include Phlox, Astilbe, Salvia, Hosta, and Echinacea. These plants are often used in gardens to provide lasting beauty and structure. They are perfect for creating a garden that looks good throughout the year, even in the coldest months. Hardy perennial plants for UK winters are a great choice for gardeners looking to add colour and life to their outdoor spaces. With their cold-resistant nature, these perennials can overwinter in the garden, ensuring a vibrant display each spring. Whether you are looking for frost-hardy perennials or weather-resistant perennials, these plants offer a reliable and beautiful solution for any garden.

    Characteristics of frost-resistant, weatherproof plants

Hardy perennials, also known as frost-resistant perennials or cold-hardy perennial plants, are a great choice for gardens in colder climates. These plants have a robust growth pattern, often spreading outwards to create a dense coverage. They can vary in width, depending on the species, but generally, they form a solid base in the garden. The development of hardy perennials begins in early spring when they start to sprout. As the weather warms, they grow steadily, reaching maturity by late summer. These plants are designed to survive harsh winters, making them ideal for UK gardens. The blooming period for hardy perennials can vary, but many flower from late spring to early autumn. Factors such as climate, weather conditions, temperature, and soil preparation play a crucial role in their blooming. Proper care and maintenance ensure a vibrant display of flowers. The bloom colours of hardy perennials are diverse, ranging from soft pastels to bright, vivid hues. The specific colour can depend on the type, cultivar, soil quality, and light exposure. Climate and care also influence the intensity of the colours. While not all hardy perennials are known for their fragrance, some do offer a pleasant scent. The intensity of the aroma can depend on the leaves, stems, and flowers. These scents can enhance the biodiversity of the garden. Mature hardy perennials can reach various heights, often between 30 cm to 1.5 metres. The height can be influenced by the plant's location, care, and combination with other plants. Choosing the right spot in the garden is essential for their growth and visual appeal.

Hardy perennials are known for their ability to thrive in cold climates. Their leaves come in various shapes, colours, and textures, often adapting to the environment. Some have broad, green leaves, while others display a silvery hue, helping them reflect sunlight. The leaf structure can be smooth or hairy, which aids in moisture retention. Most hardy perennials retain their leaves through winter, but some may shed them depending on the species and climate conditions.

These plants are winterproof, enduring frost and cold temperatures. Factors like wind exposure, soil conditions, and the duration of frost play a role in their survival. Choosing frost-resistant perennials ensures they withstand severe winters. They are often planted in sheltered spots to reduce wind impact, and well-drained soil helps prevent root damage from freezing.

Hardy perennials are generally evergreen, maintaining foliage year-round. However, some may lose leaves annually, influenced by species and local climate. In milder regions, they are more likely to stay green, while in harsher climates, they might shed leaves to conserve energy.

These plants are also heat and drought-resistant. Originating from diverse environments, they have adapted with features like deep root systems and waxy or hairy leaves to reduce water loss. They thrive in well-drained soil, even in dry conditions, making them ideal for gardens with varying weather.

Hardy perennials are safe for gardens with children and pets. They are non-toxic and pose no risk when handled properly. Their presence in the garden supports biodiversity, offering food and shelter to insects and small animals. By mimicking natural habitats, they help maintain ecosystem balance, making gardens more resilient to pests and diseases.

Best combinations with other tough plants

Hardy perennials are a great choice for gardens, especially in colder climates. These frost-resistant perennials can be combined with various plant types to create a beautiful and resilient garden. Consider pairing hardy perennial plants for UK winters with evergreen shrubs like boxwood or holly. These combinations provide year-round structure and colour. Another option is to mix cold-resistant perennial flowers with ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus or Pennisetum. This adds texture and movement to the garden, even in winter. Winter-tough plants like hellebores or bergenias can also be combined with hardy perennials. These perennials that withstand winter offer early blooms and complement the structure of other plants. The combination of perennials for severe winters with weather-resistant perennials like sedums or euphorbias creates a dynamic and low-maintenance garden. These plants are not only beautiful but also practical, as they require less care and can overwinter in the garden. By choosing perennials that overwinter in the garden, a garden can remain vibrant and interesting throughout the year.

Soil and site for hardy perennials

Hardy perennials, also known as frost-resistant perennials or cold-hardy perennial plants, thrive in various light conditions. They prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth and flowering. Wind can be a concern for these winter-tough plants. To protect them, consider planting near a windbreak or using garden structures as shields. The ideal soil for hardy perennials is well-draining and rich in organic matter. A mix of loam and sand is beneficial. Regular fertilisation supports their growth, especially in poor soils. Soil moisture is crucial; these perennials need consistent moisture but dislike waterlogged conditions. Wind and sun can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Hardy perennials prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can enhance growth. These perennials are perfect for gardens in cold climates, as they withstand severe winters and overwinter well. Choosing the right site and soil ensures these weather-resistant perennials thrive year after year.

    When to plant frost-hardy varieties

Hardy perennials can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls or bare roots, the best time is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil temperature and weather conditions play a role in successful planting. The planting distance for hardy perennials depends on the plant type, initial size, growth rate, and the number of plants per metre. This information is usually available on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for hardy perennials. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells to help the plant establish. Hardy perennials, also known as winterproof perennials, are ideal for gardens in cold climates, as they are frost-resistant and can withstand severe winters. These perennials are perfect for creating a garden that thrives even in harsh weather conditions.

    Winter Care for Perennials Hardy

Hardy perennials, also known as frost-resistant perennials or cold-hardy perennial plants, are perfect for gardens in cold climates. Proper care ensures they thrive year after year.

    • Care and Maintenance: Hardy perennials need well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Mulching helps retain moisture and protect roots.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead growth. Use clean, sharp tools for best results.
    • Fertilising: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced fertiliser. This supports growth and flowering.
    • Watering: Water deeply once a week, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture to avoid overwatering.
    • Dividing: Divide every 3-4 years in early spring to maintain vigour. This prevents overcrowding and encourages healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: Apply mulch in late autumn to protect roots from frost. Remove in spring as temperatures rise.
