Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    What are pink border flowers?

Pink flowering border plants are a popular choice for adding a touch of romance to any garden. These plants, known for their soft pink, pale pink, and even deep pink hues, create stunning pastel garden borders. Commonly referred to as blush pink edge plants or rose-hued flowering border plants, they are perfect for gardens with pink colour accents. These plants are often used in cottage gardens, where their long-blooming nature provides continuous colour. Popular varieties include Phlox, Astilbe, and Sedum, which thrive in various conditions. Pink border flowers for cottage gardens are not only beautiful but also versatile, fitting well in coral-coloured borders and gardens. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, pink flowering border plants like Geranium and Filipendula offer a range of shades from salmon pink to bright pink, making them ideal for creating romantic pink flowers displays. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider incorporating flowering border plants to achieve a harmonious and vibrant landscape.

Features of soft pink, rose and gentle tones

Pink flowering border plants are a charming addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, from compact bushes to sprawling vines. They can spread widely, creating a lush display of soft pink border flowers. The development of these plants begins in early spring, with shoots emerging as the weather warms. By summer, they reach their full size, showcasing a beautiful array of pastel pink garden borders. The blooming period for pink flowering border plants typically occurs from late spring to early autumn. Factors such as climate, temperature, and soil preparation play a crucial role in their flowering. In cooler climates, they may bloom later, while warmer regions see earlier blooms. Proper care and maintenance ensure a long-lasting display of romantic pink flowers. The bloom colours range from pale pink to deep pink, with some varieties offering salmon pink or coral-coloured borders. The specific shade depends on the plant type, soil conditions, and sunlight exposure. Gardens with pink colour accents benefit from these diverse hues, adding depth and interest. While not all pink border flowers are known for their fragrance, some varieties offer a subtle scent. The intensity of the aroma can vary based on the plant's age and health. These plants contribute to biodiversity, attracting pollinators to the garden. Mature pink border plants can reach varying heights, depending on the species. Some remain low, perfect for front borders, while others grow taller, adding layers to the garden. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care ensures they thrive, creating stunning pastel pink garden borders.

Pink flowering border plants add a touch of romance to any garden. These blush pink edge plants come in various shapes and sizes, with leaves that can be oval, lance-shaped, or even heart-shaped. The leaf colour ranges from deep green to a lighter, more pastel shade, often with a smooth or slightly textured surface. Some pink border flowers, like border pinks, may lose their leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate. Winter hardiness is crucial for pink flowering border plants. They thrive in mild climates but can be sensitive to frost. Factors like temperature, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a role in their survival. Choosing the right type for your garden's conditions is essential. Many pink border plants are evergreen, keeping their leaves year-round, while others shed leaves annually. This depends on the plant type and the local climate. In warmer areas, they are more likely to remain green. Heat and drought resistance vary among pink border flowers. Some have a waxy coating or fine hairs on their leaves, helping them retain moisture. Deep root systems also aid in surviving dry spells, making them suitable for gardens with less water. While most pink flowering border plants are safe, it's always wise to check for any toxic varieties, especially if children or pets are around. Generally, these plants are harmless with normal garden use. Pink-flowering gardens support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and birds. Long-blooming pink border plants can mimic natural habitats, enhancing the garden's ecosystem and resilience against pests.

Using pink border plants for softness and style

Pink flowering border plants can transform any garden into a romantic haven. These plants add a touch of elegance and charm with their soft pink hues. Here are some ways to incorporate pink flowering border plants in the garden:

    • Use them in borders to create a soft, romantic edge with pastel pink garden borders.
    • Plant in groups for a cohesive look, perfect for pink-flowering gardens.
    • Place them as a solitary feature to draw attention with their bright pink blooms.
    • Create a hedge or boundary with pink border plants for a stunning visual effect.
    • Use them in pots or planters to add pink colour accents to patios or balconies.
    • Incorporate them as underplanting to complement taller plants with soft pink flowers.
    • Design a cottage garden with long-blooming pink border plants for continuous colour.
    • Enhance privacy with pink border plants as a sightline breaker.
    • Encourage biodiversity by using them in an insect-friendly corner.

For those looking to buy pink flowering border plants, consider the variety of shades available, from pale pink to deep pink, to suit any garden style.

Good pairings with white, purple or green plants

Pink flowering border plants can create stunning combinations in the garden. These plants pair beautifully with white, purple, or green plants, adding a romantic touch to any space. For example, combining pink flowering border plants with white daisies or purple salvias can create a striking contrast. The soft pink hues of these plants blend well with the deep greens of ferns or hostas, providing a lush backdrop. Another beautiful combination is pairing blush pink edge plants with lavender or catmint. The rose-hued flowering border plants complement the cool tones of these purple plants, creating a harmonious look. In cottage gardens, pink border flowers like peonies or foxgloves can be mixed with pastel garden borders for a charming effect. These combinations work well because the pink border plants add a pop of colour without overwhelming the garden. The mix of colours and textures creates a balanced and inviting atmosphere. Whether using pale pink or bright pink varieties, these plants can enhance the beauty of any garden with their long-blooming nature and versatility.

Best conditions for healthy pink blooms

Pink flowering border plants thrive best in full sun to partial shade. These romantic pink flowers need at least six hours of sunlight daily. However, in hotter climates, some afternoon shade can help prevent wilting. Wind can be a concern for pink border flowers. To protect them, consider planting them near a fence or hedge to reduce wind exposure. The ideal soil for pastel pink garden borders is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality, ensuring the pink border plants grow strong. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Soil moisture is crucial for pink-flowering gardens. These plants prefer consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Pink flowering border plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Testing the soil pH can guide adjustments, ensuring the best conditions for pink-flowering borders. With the right care, gardens with pink colour accents will flourish, showcasing soft pink, pale pink, and even deep pink hues.

Planting and placement of pink border varieties

Pink flowering border plants add a touch of elegance to any garden. These plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. The planting distance for pink border flowers depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Information on the number of plants per metre is usually found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for pink border plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, and water thoroughly. After planting, regular watering is essential, especially in dry periods. This helps the plants establish and thrive, creating beautiful pink-flowering gardens. Whether choosing blush pink edge plants or rose-hued flowering border plants, these varieties bring romantic pink flowers to pastel garden borders. Enjoy the beauty of pink border plants in gardens with pink colour accents, from soft pink to deep pink shades.

    Care for Long-Lasting Border Pinks

Pink flowering border plants add a soft pink touch to any garden. Proper care ensures a vibrant display. These plants thrive in well-drained soil and need full sun to partial shade. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly. Pruning is vital for healthy growth. Trim after flowering to encourage new blooms. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damage. Fertilise in spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote lush growth. Apply every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. For those looking to expand their garden, dividing pink border flowers every 3-4 years is beneficial. This process rejuvenates the plants and encourages more blooms. Best done in early spring or autumn. Winter protection is crucial in colder climates. Mulch around the base to insulate roots. If transplanting is needed, do so in early spring. Ensure the new location has similar conditions to the original spot.

    • Water regularly, especially in dry periods.
    • Prune after flowering for new growth.
    • Fertilise in spring and throughout the growing season.
    • Divide every 3-4 years for rejuvenation.
    • Provide winter protection with mulch.
    • Transplant in early spring if necessary.
