Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application

Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

    What defines partial shade plants?

Garden plants for partial shade are those that thrive in areas with limited sunlight. These plants are perfect for spots that receive morning sun or filtered light through trees. They are also known as part-sun garden plants. Some popular choices include Heuchera, Brunnera, and Hosta. These plants are ideal for creating a lush garden under trees or in areas with moderate light. Garden plants for partial shade are versatile and can be used to add colour and texture to your garden. They are often chosen for their ability to bloom in dappled light, making them excellent shade-preferring bloomers. Light shade garden plants like Pulmonaria and Tiarella are also great options for part-sun planting. When selecting the best plants for partial shade gardens, consider those that are known for their resilience in half shade conditions. These plants not only enhance the beauty of your garden but also thrive in environments where other plants might struggle. Whether you are looking for flowering plants for dappled light or garden plants for morning sun, there are plenty of options to suit your needs.

    Characteristics of part-sun garden greenery

Garden plants for partial shade are perfect for areas with limited sunlight. These plants adapt well to environments where they receive morning sun and afternoon shade. They often spread moderately, creating a lush appearance without overwhelming the space. The development of these plants varies. Initially, they may grow slowly as they adjust to the light conditions. Over time, they reach maturity, filling the garden with vibrant foliage. The best plants for partial shade gardens thrive in dappled light, making them ideal for planting under trees or in areas with filtered light. Flowering plants for dappled light usually bloom in spring or early summer. The timing can depend on climate, temperature, and care. In cooler climates, blooms may appear later, while warmer areas might see earlier flowering. Proper soil preparation and regular watering enhance their growth. The bloom colours of light shade garden plants range from soft pastels to vivid hues. Factors like soil type, light exposure, and plant variety influence these colours. Semi-shade garden plants often have delicate flowers that add subtle beauty to the garden. Some partial shade plants are known for their fragrance. The scent can vary based on the plant's age and health. While not all light-shade tolerant outdoor plants are fragrant, those that are can attract pollinators, enhancing biodiversity. Mature garden plants for partial shade can reach various heights, depending on species and care. They fit well in layered garden designs, providing depth and interest. Choosing the right location and maintaining them ensures they complement other garden elements.

Garden plants for partial shade offer a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be broad or narrow, with shades ranging from deep green to variegated patterns. The texture may be smooth or slightly hairy, which helps in retaining moisture. These plants often keep their leaves year-round, depending on the species and climate. In winter, some may lose leaves if temperatures drop significantly, but many remain evergreen, providing structure in the garden.

Winter hardiness of garden plants for partial shade depends on several factors. They generally withstand mild frost, but prolonged cold can be challenging. Choosing the right species is crucial, as some are more frost-tolerant. Wind protection and well-drained soil also enhance their resilience during colder months.

Many garden plants for partial shade are evergreen, maintaining foliage throughout the year. However, some may shed leaves annually, influenced by species, climate, and location. In milder climates, these plants often stay green, while in harsher conditions, they might drop leaves to conserve energy.

Heat and drought tolerance in garden plants for partial shade vary. Originating from regions with moderate climates, they often have adaptations like waxy leaves or deep roots to cope with dry spells. Adequate soil moisture and protection from harsh winds are essential for their survival during hot periods.

Garden plants for partial shade are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal gardening practices ensure they pose no harm, and they can be enjoyed without worry.

These plants contribute significantly to biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for various insects and animals, supporting a balanced ecosystem. By mimicking natural habitats, they enhance garden resilience against diseases and pests, making them a valuable addition to any garden.

Where to grow plants in dappled and morning light

Garden plants for partial shade can transform a garden into a vibrant space, even with limited sunlight. These plants thrive in areas with dappled or morning light, making them perfect for various garden settings. Here are some ways to use these versatile plants:

    • Border: Use light shade garden plants to create colourful borders that brighten up shaded areas.
    • Group Planting: Semi-shade garden plants work well in group plantings, adding texture and depth to the garden.
    • Under Trees: Planting under trees can be challenging, but partial shade plants are ideal for these spots.
    • Containers: Light-shade tolerant outdoor plants can thrive in pots, making them perfect for patios or balconies.
    • Privacy Screens: Use flowering plants for dappled light as natural privacy screens in the garden.
    • Shade Gardens: Create a lush shade garden with shade-preferring bloomers that enjoy filtered light.
For those looking to buy garden plants for partial shade, consider options that suit the specific light conditions of the garden. Whether it's plants for semi shade or moderate light-requiring plants, there's a variety to choose from to ensure a thriving garden.

Companion combinations for partial shade gardens

Garden plants for partial shade can create a beautiful and diverse garden. Combining these plants with others that thrive in similar conditions can enhance the garden's appeal. Consider pairing light shade garden plants with ferns and hostas. These plants for semi shade offer lush foliage that complements flowering plants for dappled light, like astilbes and foxgloves. Another great combination is using garden plants for morning sun, such as hellebores, alongside shade-preferring bloomers like bleeding hearts. This mix provides a variety of textures and colours, making the garden vibrant. These combinations work well because they all thrive in moderate light-requiring environments. Plants for filtered light, like tiarella, can add a delicate touch when planted with part-sun garden plants. This creates a harmonious balance in the garden, ensuring each plant gets the right amount of light. Choosing the best plants for partial shade gardens involves understanding the light needs of each plant. By selecting plants for half shade and those that prefer filtered light, a garden can flourish under trees or in areas with limited sun exposure.

Best conditions for healthy, balanced growth

Garden plants for partial shade thrive in areas with filtered light or morning sun. These semi-shade garden plants prefer spots where they receive sunlight for a few hours, usually in the morning, and are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Factors like nearby trees or buildings can provide the necessary shade. Wind sensitivity is a concern for some light-shade tolerant outdoor plants. To protect them, consider planting near a fence or using windbreaks like hedges. The ideal soil for partial shade plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality, ensuring nutrients are available. Regular fertilisation supports growth, especially in garden plants under trees where competition for nutrients is high. Soil moisture is crucial for plants for semi shade. They need consistent moisture, but the soil should not be waterlogged. Wind and sun exposure can affect moisture levels, so mulching helps retain water. Garden plants for morning sun prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Testing soil pH and adjusting with lime or sulphur can create the best environment for these moderate light-requiring plants.

    Planting advice for filtered-light zones

Garden plants for partial shade thrive in areas with limited sunlight. These plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, drainage, and light availability are crucial. Plant spacing depends on the type of plant, its size at planting, growth rate, and the number of plants per metre. This information is usually found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is key for success. Loosen the soil and mix in organic matter to improve drainage and nutrients. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells. Garden plants for partial shade, such as light shade garden plants and part-sun garden plants, need consistent moisture to establish well. Regular care ensures these semi shade plants flourish in their new home.

Maintenance Tips for Plants for Semi Shade

Garden plants for partial shade thrive in areas with filtered light or morning sun. These semi-shade garden plants require specific care to flourish. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly. Pruning is beneficial for maintaining shape and encouraging growth. The best time to prune is late winter or early spring. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damage. Fertilising is crucial for healthy growth. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and mid-summer. Follow package instructions for the correct amount. Some light-shade tolerant outdoor plants benefit from dividing every few years. This process, best done in early spring, promotes vigour and prevents overcrowding. Winter protection is necessary for some partial shade plants. Mulch around the base to insulate roots from cold temperatures. Transplanting can be done in early spring or autumn. Ensure the new location has similar light conditions. Water well after moving to help roots establish.

    • Water regularly, especially in dry periods.
    • Prune in late winter or early spring.
    • Fertilise in early spring and mid-summer.
    • Divide plants every few years in early spring.
    • Provide winter protection with mulch.
    • Transplant in early spring or autumn.

Aesthetic calm in lightly shaded areas

Garden plants for partial shade bring beauty to areas with limited sunlight. These plants often have delicate flowers with soft colours, adding a gentle touch to the garden. Many flowering plants for dappled light, like ferns and hostas, have lush green leaves that create a calming atmosphere. The leaves of these part-sun garden plants can vary in texture, from smooth to slightly rough, providing visual interest. Garden plants for morning sun, such as astilbes, are known for their vibrant blooms that attract bees and butterflies, making them ideal for wildlife-friendly gardens. These plants can also serve as a refuge for small creatures, offering shelter and food. In autumn, some semi shade plants display beautiful leaf colours, enhancing the garden's appeal. The structure of these plants in winter, especially when covered in frost, adds a unique texture to the landscape. The gentle movement of shade-preferring bloomers, like ornamental grasses, creates a dynamic visual effect.
