Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day

Growth habit

Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application

Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

    Buy hardy plants

Embrace the resilience and enduring beauty of your garden year-round with our selection of winter-hardy plants, carefully curated to withstand the harshest of climates without sacrificing their aesthetic appeal. Among the robust yet enchanting species we offer, the Phlox paniculata 'Laura', commonly known as perennial Phlox, stands out with its vibrant blooms and refreshing fragrance, adding a touch of warmth to the cold season. Equally hardy and delightful is the Nepeta × faassenii, a plant that not only braves the chill but also brings a serene and soft texture to your winter landscape. These plants are more than just survivors; they are winter warriors, offering a lush display that defies the freeze. Whether your garden is a sanctuary for perennial favorites or a stage for the evergreen spectacle, our winter-hardy plants are cultivated to ensure that your garden remains a haven of natural beauty, even when blanketed in snow.

    The Charm of Winter-Hardy Plants

Winter-hardy plants bring a unique charm to gardens, offering structure and color even during the coldest months. These plants are well-adapted to survive freezing temperatures, with some retaining their foliage and others showcasing winter flowers or interesting bark and seeds. By incorporating winter-hardy varieties into your landscape, you can ensure year-round interest and vitality in your garden space.

Designing with Winter Toughness in Mind

When designing a garden for year-round enjoyment, it's essential to include a variety of plants that can withstand winter's challenges. This can mean selecting plants with deep root systems, tough foliage, or those that go dormant yet maintain a strong presence throughout the season. It's not only about survival but also about providing a visual feast for the eyes when the rest of the garden has succumbed to frost.

    Spotlight on Stalwart Species

Heijnen Plants offers an array of winter-hardy plants that are not only tough but also enchanting. Take the Phlox paniculata 'Laura' for instance, with its summer-blooming purple flowers that stand out against the winter landscape as they mature. The Nepeta × faassenii, on the other hand, is a herbaceous perennial that provides a soft, gray-green backdrop throughout the year.

Asarum europaeum, commonly known as European wild ginger, offers glossy evergreen leaves that persist through winter, adding a touch of elegance. Potentilla nepalensis 'Miss Willmott', with its charming pink blossoms, is a durable addition that blooms in late spring to early summer, while the Centranthus ruber 'Coccineus', or crimson red valerian, provides striking red flowers and a robust constitution that withstands cold snaps.

For a splash of late-summer color that extends into the fall, Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty' is a perfect choice with its fiery red and orange blooms. Polemonium caeruleum, also known as Jacob's ladder, offers both attractive foliage and flowers, maintaining its decorative appeal even as the temperatures drop.

Not to forget is the classic Hedera helix 'Woerner', or common ivy, which provides dense evergreen coverage and is ideal for creating a lush, green setting all year round. Physostegia virginiana 'Summer Snow', also termed as the obedient plant, is another robust perennial that features spikes of white blooms and holds its form in the winter garden.

Lastly, for ground cover that adds a silver-blue hue to the landscape, Sedum cyaneum 'Sachalin', or azure stonecrop, is a hardy choice with succulent leaves and a tolerance for dry, cold conditions.

    Caring for Your Winter-Hardy Plants

While winter-hardy plants are robust, they still benefit from proper care to maximize their potential. Mulching in late fall can help protect the roots from freezing temperatures, and pruning in late winter can encourage new growth and maintain the desired shape. It's crucial to ensure that the soil offers adequate drainage to prevent root rot during wetter periods.

By selecting winter-hardy plants from Heijnen Plants, you can create a garden that not only survives but thrives through the winter months, providing a beautiful and resilient sanctuary that can be enjoyed all year long.

    Frequently Asked Questions Hardy plants

What function can winter-hardy plants have in a garden?

Winter-hardy plants serve multiple functions in a garden. They can provide year-round interest with evergreen foliage or persistent structures even during the colder months. In addition to their aesthetic role, they often serve as the backbone of the garden, offering structure and continuity. Their resilience also makes them ideal for gardeners seeking low-maintenance options. Furthermore, many winter-hardy plants support wildlife, providing food and shelter throughout the year.

Which is the best period for transplanting winter-hardy plants?

The best period for transplanting winter-hardy plants aligns with their planting period, which is during the dormancy phase from late fall to early spring. This timing minimizes stress on the plants and allows them to recover from the transplant process before the growing season starts. It is important to ensure that the plants are well-watered after transplanting to facilitate root establishment and to provide mulch for insulation against temperature fluctuations.

Which plants can be combined well with winter-hardy plants?

Winter-hardy plants can be effectively combined with a variety of other plant types to create a diverse and resilient garden. They pair well with bee-friendly and butterfly-friendly plants, enhancing the garden's ecological value. Ornamental grasses offer contrasting textures, while shrubs and bushes provide a backdrop that highlights the winter-hardy plants' features. Ground cover plants can fill in gaps, and rock garden plants complement their robust nature, creating a harmonious landscape.

In which soil type do most winter-hardy plants grow well?

Most winter-hardy plants prefer well-draining soil to prevent root rot during wetter seasons. While individual requirements may vary, a general-purpose garden soil rich in organic matter typically provides a suitable growing medium. Some varieties, such as Sedum, may prefer a more gritty or sandy soil to replicate their natural, rocky habitats. Ensuring the correct soil conditions is essential for the health and vigor of winter-hardy plants.

What popular types of winter-hardy plants are there?

Popular varieties of winter-hardy plants include Phlox paniculata 'Laura', known for its vibrant blooms, and the fragrant Nepeta × faassenii, commonly used in borders. Asarum europaeum provides lush ground cover, while Potentilla nepalensis 'Miss Willmott' adds a touch of color with its deep pink flowers. For height and structure, Centranthus ruber 'Coccineus' is a great choice. Sedum cyaneum 'Sachalin' is valued for its succulent foliage and azure flowers.

In what period can I best plant winter-hardy plants?

The optimal planting period for winter-hardy plants is during the dormancy phase, from late fall to early spring, avoiding periods of frost. This timing allows the plants to establish roots in their new location before the stress of the growing season begins. Additionally, cooler temperatures can reduce the need for frequent watering. For regions with harsh winters, it is recommended to plant in early fall, giving the plants time to establish before the cold sets in.
