Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

They are also known as drought-tolerant perennials or heat-resistant perennials. Some popular types include Sedum, Stachys, and Eryngium. These plants are hardy and can thrive in dry gardens, making them ideal for low-water garden designs. Perennials for dry soil are often used in gardens with poor or stony soils. They are great for sunny spots where other plants might struggle. These plants are not only beautiful but also practical, as they require less maintenance. They are also excellent choices for perennials for poor soils, as they do not need rich soil to grow well. By choosing these plants, a garden can remain vibrant even in dry weather.

    Key features of water-wise perennials

Perennials for dry soil are perfect for gardens with limited water. These drought-tolerant perennials have unique growth patterns. They often spread wide, covering the ground to retain moisture. Some hardy dry-soil plants grow upright, while others form low mats, making them ideal for dry borders. The development of perennials for dry soil starts in early spring. They emerge slowly, adapting to the dry conditions. By summer, these low-water perennial plants reach maturity, showcasing their resilience. Their growth depends on factors like soil type and sunlight. Blooming months for perennials that thrive in dry gardens vary. Most bloom in late spring to early summer. Climate and temperature play a role, as well as the plant's age and care. Proper soil preparation enhances their flowering potential. The bloom colours of dry-soil hardy perennials range from vibrant yellows to soft purples. The specific shade depends on the species and cultivar. Soil quality and light exposure also influence the intensity of the colours. Some perennials for dry positions are known for their fragrance. The scent can come from the flowers or leaves. The intensity varies, adding a sensory element to the garden. These plants contribute to biodiversity, attracting pollinators. Mature height of perennials for dry soil varies. Some remain low, while others can reach up to a metre. Their height depends on the species and growing conditions. Choosing the right spot in the garden ensures they thrive alongside other plants.

Perennials for dry soil are perfect for gardens with limited water. These drought-tolerant perennials have unique leaf shapes and colours that help them survive. Leaves can be narrow or thick, often with a waxy coating or fine hairs to reduce water loss. Colours range from deep green to grey, reflecting sunlight and reducing heat absorption. Many perennials for dry soil keep their leaves year-round, providing structure even in winter. However, some may lose leaves in harsh conditions, depending on the species and climate.

Winter hardiness is crucial for perennials that thrive in dry gardens. These hardy dry-soil plants can withstand cold temperatures, but factors like wind and soil conditions play a role. Well-drained soil helps prevent root damage during frost. In contrast, heat-resistant perennials are adapted to hot, dry summers. Their deep root systems access moisture far below the surface, while their leaf structures minimise water loss.

Perennials for dry positions are generally safe for gardens with children and pets. While some plants may have mild toxicity, they are harmless with normal garden use. These plants also support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and birds. By mimicking natural habitats, perennials for dry borders enhance garden ecosystems, making them more resilient to pests and diseases.

    Best partners for drought-loving perennials

Perennials for dry soil can be beautifully combined with various plant types to create a stunning garden. These drought-tolerant perennials thrive alongside hardy dry-soil plants like sedums and ornamental grasses. Sedums, with their fleshy leaves, store water and complement the texture of perennials for dry positions. Ornamental grasses add movement and height, making them perfect partners for perennials that thrive in dry gardens. Another great combination is with Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary and thyme. These heat-resistant perennials share similar growing conditions and add fragrance to the garden. For a splash of colour, consider pairing perennials for dry borders with sun-loving plants like echinacea or gaillardia. These plants for dry soil offer vibrant blooms and attract pollinators, enhancing the garden's biodiversity. These combinations work well because they all prefer similar conditions, such as full sun and well-drained soil. By choosing perennials for the sunniest spots and pairing them with shrubs for dry soil, a low-water garden can be both beautiful and sustainable. This approach not only conserves water but also ensures that the garden remains vibrant throughout the seasons.

Soil types and drainage for low-water plants

Perennials for dry soil, also known as drought-tolerant perennials, thrive in sunny spots. They need full sun to grow well, as sunlight helps them produce energy. However, too much wind can harm these hardy dry-soil plants. To protect them, consider planting them near a wall or using windbreaks like hedges. The best soil for low-water perennial plants is well-draining. Sandy or gravelly soils are ideal because they allow water to pass through easily, preventing root rot. Adding organic matter can improve soil structure and help retain some moisture. Regular fertilisation supports growth, especially in nutrient-poor soils. Bodemvochtigheid is crucial for perennials that thrive in dry conditions. While they prefer dry soil, occasional watering during prolonged dry spells can be beneficial. Wind and sun can dry out the soil quickly, so mulching helps retain moisture. These perennials prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. A pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal. Soil testing can help determine the pH level, and adjustments can be made with lime or sulphur if needed. By understanding these factors, perennials for dry positions can flourish in any garden.

    Planting drought-tolerant perennials

Perennials for dry soil can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. Those with roots or clumps are best planted in spring or autumn. Consider the plant type, size at planting, growth rate, and number of plants per metre. Information on the number of plants per metre is available on the Heijnen product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for perennials that thrive in dry conditions. Ensure the soil is well-drained and loosened to allow roots to establish. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and during dry spells to help establish roots. Drought-tolerant perennials, such as hardy dry-soil plants, are ideal for dry borders and sunny spots. They are also suitable for stony or nutrient-poor soils, making them perfect for perennials for poor soils. These perennials for dry positions are excellent choices for creating a resilient garden.

Maintenance of Plants for Dry Soil

Perennials for dry soil are perfect for gardens with limited water. These drought-tolerant perennials require specific care to thrive.

    • Watering: Perennials for dry soil need minimal watering. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer. Water early morning or late afternoon to prevent evaporation.
    • Pruning: Prune perennials for dry soil in early spring. Use sharp tools to remove dead or damaged parts, promoting healthy growth.
    • Fertilising: Fertilise perennials for dry soil in spring. Use a balanced fertiliser sparingly, as these plants thrive in nutrient-poor soils.
    • Dividing: Divide perennials for dry soil every 3-4 years in autumn. This encourages new growth and prevents overcrowding.
    • Winter Protection: Most perennials for dry soil are hardy, but mulching can protect roots from extreme cold.
    • Transplanting: Transplant perennials for dry soil in early spring. Water well after moving to help roots establish.
These dry-soil hardy perennials are ideal for sunny spots and poor soils. Consider adding shrubs for dry soil to complement these low-water perennial plants. For more options, explore perennials for dry borders and buy perennials for dry soil to enhance your garden's resilience.
