Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

What are pink perennials and their appeal?

Pink flowering perennials are plants that bloom year after year, offering a range of pink shades from soft pink to deep pink. These plants are popular in gardens for their romantic pink flowers and pastel blooms. They are often used in pink-flowering gardens and pink-flowering borders to create a charming and inviting atmosphere. Pink flowering perennials are also known as rose-coloured garden plants or pink-hued perennial flowers. These terms highlight the variety of pink tones these plants can bring to a garden, such as salmon pink, bright pink, and peony pink. In the garden, pink flowering perennials are perfect for adding colour accents. They are ideal for pink perennials for cottage gardens and the best pink flowers for sunny borders. Popular genera include Phlox, Astilbe, Sedum, Dianthus, and Geranium. These plants thrive in gardens with pink colour accents, creating coral-toned borders and gardens. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding flowering perennials to enjoy their lasting beauty.

Features of blush, pastel and bright pink blooms

Pink flowering perennials are a delightful addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, from compact mounds to taller, more spreading types. They can fill spaces with their lush foliage and vibrant blooms, creating a stunning display. The growth of pink flowering perennials varies, with some spreading up to 60 cm wide, making them ideal for filling garden borders. The development of pink flowering perennials begins in early spring when new shoots emerge. As the season progresses, these plants grow steadily, reaching their full size by summer. The timing of their growth can depend on factors like soil quality and sunlight. Pink flowering perennials typically bloom from late spring to early autumn. The exact months can vary based on climate and weather conditions. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil can encourage earlier blooms, while cooler climates might delay flowering. The blooms of pink flowering perennials come in a range of shades, from soft pink to deep pink. The colour can be influenced by the plant variety, soil pH, and light exposure. For instance, more sunlight can enhance the vibrancy of the blooms. While not all pink flowering perennials are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a pleasant fragrance. This can add an extra layer of enjoyment to the garden, attracting pollinators and enhancing biodiversity. The mature height of pink flowering perennials can vary, with some reaching up to 90 cm. This makes them suitable for creating layered garden designs, adding depth and interest to the landscape. Choosing the right location and providing proper care can help these plants thrive, making them a perfect choice for gardens with pink colour accents.

Pink flowering perennials are a delightful addition to any garden, offering a range of shades from soft pink to deep pink. The leaves of these rose-coloured garden plants vary in shape and texture, often with a smooth or slightly hairy surface. Leaf colour can range from bright green to a more muted tone, depending on the specific variety. In winter, some pink-hued perennial flowers may lose their leaves, while others remain evergreen, influenced by the plant type and local climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is an important factor for pink flowering perennials. These plants can withstand cold temperatures, but their survival depends on the duration of frost, wind exposure, and soil conditions. Choosing the right type for the local climate ensures they thrive even in colder months.

Many pink perennials are evergreen, maintaining their foliage year-round, while others shed leaves annually. This depends on the species and the garden's location. In warmer climates, more varieties tend to stay green throughout the year.

Heat and drought resistance are crucial for pink perennials, especially in sunny borders. Originating from various climates, these plants often have adaptations like a waxy leaf coating or deep root systems to conserve moisture. Adequate soil moisture and protection from strong winds enhance their resilience.

Pink flowering perennials are generally safe for gardens with children and pets. While some plants may have mild toxicity, they are harmless with normal garden use. Ensuring proper placement and care keeps the garden safe and enjoyable.

These romantic pink flowers support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and birds. Their long blooming period and insect-friendly nature help maintain ecological balance, making them a valuable addition to any garden with pink colour accents.

Where to use pink flowers for impact or softness

Pink flowering perennials are a wonderful addition to any garden, offering a range of romantic pink flowers that can create a soft and inviting atmosphere. These soft pink perennials are perfect for various garden applications, adding pastel pink blooms that enhance the overall aesthetic.

    • Border: Use pink flowering perennials to create stunning pink-flowering borders. They add a touch of elegance and can be combined with other pastel blooms for a cohesive look.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a more dramatic effect. This works well in gardens with pink colour accents, providing a lush and full appearance.
    • Solitary Planting: For a focal point, use pink perennial flowers as a solitary plant. This can draw attention and add interest to any garden space.
    • Containers: Pink flowering perennials are ideal for pots and containers, allowing flexibility in garden design and placement.
    • Privacy Screens: Use these plants as a natural privacy screen or windbreak, offering both beauty and function.
    • Insect-Friendly Zones: Create an insect-friendly area with pink perennials, attracting pollinators and enhancing biodiversity.
For those looking to buy pink flowering perennials, consider the variety of shades available, from pale pink to deep pink, to suit any garden style. Whether for cottage gardens or sunny borders, these plants are a versatile choice for any gardener.

Matching pink perennials with other tones

Pink flowering perennials can create a stunning effect in any garden. These rose-coloured garden plants pair beautifully with a variety of other plant types. Consider combining pink-hued perennial flowers with silver-foliaged plants like Artemisia or Lamb's Ear. The soft pink of the perennials contrasts nicely with the silvery tones, creating a romantic pink flowers display. For a more vibrant look, mix pastel blooms with deep purple Salvia or blue Delphiniums. This combination highlights the pink perennials, making them stand out in the garden. Some beautiful plant combinations include pink perennials with white daisies or yellow Coreopsis. These pairings add a cheerful touch to pink-flowering gardens. Another option is to plant pink perennials alongside ornamental grasses. The movement of the grasses complements the static beauty of the pink flowers, adding texture to pink-flowering borders. These combinations work well because they balance colour and texture, enhancing the overall appeal of gardens with pink colour accents. Whether using soft pink, pale pink, or bright pink, these perennials are perfect for creating coral-toned borders and gardens. They are also ideal for pink perennials for cottage gardens or the best pink flowers for sunny borders, offering a timeless charm to any outdoor space.

    Conditions for growing pink-flowering plants

Pink flowering perennials thrive best in full sun to partial shade. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily, but some varieties can tolerate less. Wind can affect these plants, so consider planting them near a fence or hedge for protection. The ideal soil for pink flowering perennials is well-drained and rich in organic matter. Regular fertilisation helps them grow strong and healthy. Soil moisture is crucial; ensure the ground is neither too dry nor too wet. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. These perennials prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH can be influenced by the type of soil and the amount of organic material present. By providing the right conditions, pink flowering perennials can add a romantic touch to gardens with pink colour accents, creating beautiful pink-flowering borders.

    Planting pink perennials with care

Pink flowering perennials, also known as rose-coloured garden plants, can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For those with roots or clumps, the best time is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant spacing, the type and size of the pink perennial flowers at planting time are important. Growth speed and the number of plants per metre or square metre should be checked on the plant's product page. This ensures a well-planned garden with pink colour accents. Proper soil preparation is crucial for pink-hued perennial flowers. The soil should be well-drained and enriched with organic matter to support healthy growth. For planting instructions, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks, to help establish the plants. With care, gardens with pink-flowering borders will thrive, showcasing romantic pink flowers in various shades like soft pink, pale pink, and deep pink.

How to Maintain Pink Perennial Flowers

Pink flowering perennials add a touch of elegance to any garden. These soft pink perennials require specific care to thrive. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent root rot. Pruning is vital for healthy growth. Trim back after flowering to encourage new blooms. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damaging the plant. The best time to prune is late autumn or early spring. Fertilising pink perennial flowers helps them flourish. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and again in mid-summer. Follow the package instructions for the correct amount. Dividing these plants every few years keeps them vigorous. The ideal time for dividing is in early spring or late autumn. Winter protection is crucial for some varieties. Mulch around the base to insulate roots from frost. Transplanting should be done in early spring. Water thoroughly after moving to help them settle.

    • Water regularly, especially in dry periods.
    • Prune after flowering for new growth.
    • Fertilise in spring and summer.
    • Divide every few years for vigour.
    • Protect with mulch in winter.
    • Transplant in early spring.
