Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

What are good perennials for pots?

Perennials for pots or planters are plants that live for more than two years and are perfect for growing in containers. These plants are ideal for adding colour and texture to patios, balconies, or any small garden space. They come back year after year, making them a cost-effective choice for gardeners. Perennials for pots are also known as patio perennials or container perennials. These terms are often used interchangeably, as they all refer to plants that thrive in pots or planters. In the garden, perennials for pots are used to create beautiful displays that can be easily moved and rearranged. They are perfect for those who want a low-maintenance garden, as they require less care than annuals. Some popular choices include Heuchera, Lavandula, Salvia, Carex, and Liriope. These plants are not only attractive but also hardy, making them suitable for various climates. When choosing the best perennials for pots and containers, consider factors like sunlight, water needs, and the size of the pot. With the right selection, perennials can transform any space into a vibrant and inviting area.

Key features of container-friendly perennial plants

Perennials for pots or planters are a great choice for adding colour and life to any garden space. These plants grow in a variety of forms, often compact and bushy, making them ideal for containers. They spread moderately, allowing them to fill pots without overwhelming them. The development of perennials for pots or planters begins in early spring. They start with small shoots that gradually grow into lush foliage. By summer, these plants reach their full size, providing a vibrant display. The blooming period for perennials in pots can vary. Many bloom from late spring to early autumn, depending on the climate and care. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil encourage longer blooming. Regular watering and feeding also play a crucial role. The bloom colours of container perennials are diverse, ranging from bright reds and yellows to soft pastels. The specific colour can depend on the species and cultivar, as well as soil conditions and sunlight exposure. Some perennials for pots are known for their fragrance, adding an extra sensory dimension to the garden. The scent can come from the flowers or even the leaves, enhancing the garden's biodiversity. Mature perennials for pots can reach different heights, typically between 30 to 90 cm. This height makes them perfect for creating layers in a garden, adding depth and interest. Choosing the right spot and providing proper care ensures they thrive, making them a valuable addition to any patio or balcony.

Perennials for pots or planters offer a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be broad or narrow, with shades ranging from deep green to variegated patterns. The texture may be smooth or slightly hairy, affecting how they handle different weather conditions. Some perennials lose their leaves in winter, while others remain evergreen, depending on the species and climate. Winter hardiness is crucial for perennials in pots. Factors like temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure play a role. Choosing the right species and ensuring good soil conditions can help them withstand cold weather. Many perennials for pots are evergreen, providing year-round interest. However, some may shed leaves annually, influenced by species choice and local climate. Positioning in a sheltered spot can also impact leaf retention. Heat and drought tolerance are important for patio perennials. Origin, leaf structure, and root depth contribute to their resilience. A waxy coating or fine hairs on leaves can reduce water loss, while deep roots help access moisture. Regarding toxicity, most perennials for pots are safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no danger, but it's wise to research specific plants for any potential risks. Perennials for pots enhance biodiversity by offering food and shelter for wildlife. Long blooming periods and insect-friendly traits support ecosystems. They can mimic natural habitats, promoting garden resilience against pests and diseases. This balance benefits both the garden and its visitors.

Where to place potted perennials for success

Perennials for pots or planters are a great way to add colour and life to any garden space. These container perennials are versatile and can be used in various ways to enhance outdoor areas. Here are some ideas on how to use perennials for pots and containers effectively:

    • Insect corner: Attract beneficial insects by placing perennials for pots in a dedicated biodiversity zone.
Choosing the best perennials for pots and containers can transform any outdoor area into a beautiful and low-maintenance space. Consider the specific needs of each plant to ensure they thrive in their chosen location. For those looking to buy perennials for pots or containers, selecting the right varieties will ensure a stunning display throughout the seasons.

    Companion planting in containers

Perennials for pots or planters can create a stunning display when combined with other plant types. Mixing perennials with annuals, herbs, and small shrubs can add variety and interest to any garden. For example, combining perennials like Heuchera with ornamental grasses can provide texture and movement. Adding herbs such as thyme or rosemary not only enhances the visual appeal but also offers a practical use in the kitchen. Another beautiful combination is using perennials like Salvia with trailing plants such as Bacopa. This mix creates a cascading effect that is perfect for balconies or patios. The vibrant colours of Salvia contrast beautifully with the delicate flowers of Bacopa, making it an eye-catching display. These combinations work well because they balance height, texture, and colour. Perennials for pots and containers are often low-maintenance, making them ideal for busy gardeners. They thrive in various conditions, providing year-round interest. By choosing the best perennials for pots and containers, a garden can be transformed into a lively and inviting space.

Choosing the right compost and drainage

Perennials for pots or planters need the right light to thrive. Most prefer full sun, but some can tolerate partial shade. It's important to consider the location of the pots, as nearby walls or trees can affect light levels. Wind can be a problem for container perennials. To protect them, place pots in sheltered spots or use windbreaks like fences or hedges. The soil is crucial for potted garden perennials. A well-draining mix is best, as it prevents waterlogging. Adding compost can improve soil quality and provide nutrients. Regular feeding helps perennials for pots grow well. Moisture levels are important too. Wind and sun can dry out the soil quickly, so check regularly and water as needed. The pH level of the soil should be slightly acidic to neutral. Testing the soil can help ensure the right conditions. By considering these factors, perennials for pots and containers can flourish on patios or balconies.

    Planting techniques for pot-grown perennials

Perennials for pots or planters can be planted year-round, except during frost. When planting, consider the type of perennial, its size, and growth rate. Container perennials are versatile and can thrive in various conditions. For best results, plant them in spring or autumn. Ensure the soil is well-prepared, with good drainage and nutrients. The plant spacing depends on the perennial type and size. Check the Heijnen product page for specific plant spacing details. Proper ground preparation is crucial. Loosen the soil and mix in compost to enhance fertility. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the perennial in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially during dry spells. Patio perennials and container perennials are ideal for balconies or patios, offering vibrant colour and texture. Remember, perennials suitable for containers need consistent care to flourish.

Ongoing Care for Perennials for Pots or Planters

Perennials for pots or planters are a great way to add colour to any garden space. Proper care ensures they thrive. Here are some tips:

    • Watering: Check soil moisture regularly. Water when the top inch feels dry. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
    • Pruning: Trim dead or damaged leaves to encourage new growth. Best done in early spring or late autumn.
    • Fertilising: Use a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer. Follow package instructions for quantity.
    • Dividing: Divide perennials every 3-4 years to maintain vigour. Best done in early spring.
    • Winter Protection: Move pots to a sheltered area or wrap them in bubble wrap to protect roots from frost.
    • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years to refresh soil and provide more space for roots.

For those looking to buy perennials for pots or containers, consider options suitable for balconies or patios. Container perennials offer flexibility and beauty, making them ideal for any garden setting.
