Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Root type
Root type

A plant or tree can be delivered in a pot, with a root ball or with bare roots.

  • Pot: the advantage of plants grown in pots is that they can be planted all year round, with the exception of periods of frost. After planting, both the root system and the visible, above-ground parts of the plant/tree will continue to grow immediately, provided temperatures are high enough.
  • Root ball: plants and trees with (wired) root balls can be planted roughly between October and April, depending on the weather. During these months, the plants are dormant and at their least vulnerable, which is ideal for planting. Because the plants are freshly uprooted (dug up) at the growers, the root system may be somewhat damaged. Once planted, the plant/tree will first form new roots and will then continue to grow above ground.
  • Bare roots: plants and trees delivered with bare roots can be planted roughly between October and April, depending on the weather. During these months, the plants are dormant and at their least vulnerable, which is ideal for planting. Because the plants are freshly uprooted (dug up) at the growers, the root system may be somewhat damaged. Once planted, the plant/tree will first form new roots and will then continue to grow above ground. Because there is no sand on the roots, the plants are lightweight and therefore easy to carry.
Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Width at time of delivery (cm)

Width at time of delivery (cm)

Our plants can be ordered in different sizes. By width on delivery (cm), we mean the approximate width of the plant in centimetres when we deliver it to you.

The number of centimetres indicated refers to the widest part of the plant. It may not be as wide in other places, since it is a natural product and does not have standard dimensions.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

What is a Fast-Growing Hedge Plant?

Fast-growing hedge plants are popular choices for creating privacy in gardens. These plants grow quickly, making them ideal for those who want a green boundary or to hide unsightly objects. Common types include Cuprocyparis, Prunus, and Ligustrum. These hedges are also known as swift-growing hedge or speedy hedge plants. They are perfect for creating a boundary with neighbours or as a seasonal privacy solution. Fast-growing hedges are used for quick garden privacy and can act as a natural screen. They are often chosen for their ability to fill spaces rapidly, providing a tall hedge or low hedge depending on the garden's needs. These plants are vigorous and can be used as a border edge or to block hedges. They are excellent for those looking for a hedge for fast privacy or a quick privacy hedge. With their rapid growth, they are a practical choice for anyone needing a fast-filling plant solution.

Characteristics of speedy hedge plants

Fast-growing hedge plants are popular for creating quick privacy in gardens. These plants grow rapidly, often reaching their full height within a few years. They spread widely, forming dense barriers that are perfect for screening and blocking unsightly views. The growth pattern of these rapid-growth hedge plants is typically upright, with some varieties spreading more than others, depending on the species and care provided. The development of fast-growing hedge plants begins in early spring when new shoots appear. These plants continue to grow throughout the warmer months, reaching maturity in a few seasons. The speed of growth can be influenced by factors such as soil quality, watering, and fertilisation. Fast-growing hedges usually bloom in late spring to early summer. The exact timing can vary based on climate, weather conditions, and the plant's age. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil can encourage earlier blooming. The flowers of quick-growing hedge plants can vary in colour, often depending on the species and cultivar. Some may have white or pink blooms, while others might display yellow or red hues. Light exposure and soil conditions can also affect the vibrancy of the blooms. While not all fast-growing hedges are known for their fragrance, some varieties do offer a pleasant scent. This can be influenced by the type of plant, the time of year, and the overall health of the hedge. Mature fast-growing hedge plants can reach impressive heights, often between 1.5 to 3 metres. The final height depends on the species, care, and placement in the garden. These tall hedges are ideal for creating a boundary with neighbours or providing a seasonal privacy solution.

Fast-growing hedge plants are popular for creating quick privacy in gardens. These swift-growing hedge plants have various leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or even needle-like, with shades ranging from deep green to lighter hues. The texture can be smooth or slightly rough, depending on the species. Some fast-growing hedges lose their leaves in winter, while others remain evergreen, influenced by the plant type and climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is crucial for fast-growing hedges. These plants can withstand cold temperatures, but factors like frost duration, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a role. Choosing the right species for the local climate ensures better survival during frosty periods.

Many fast-growing hedge plants are evergreen, providing year-round privacy. However, some may shed leaves annually, similar to most perennials. The choice of species, climate, and location affect whether a hedge remains green throughout the year.

Heat and drought resistance are important for fast-growing hedges. Origin, leaf structure, and root depth influence their ability to withstand hot, dry conditions. Some have waxy coatings or fine hairs on leaves to reduce water loss, while deep roots help access moisture.

Fast-growing hedge plants are generally safe for gardens, posing no risk to children or pets when used normally. They contribute to biodiversity by offering food and shelter to wildlife. These hedges can mimic natural habitats, supporting ecosystems and enhancing garden resilience against pests.

Ideal uses for quick-growing hedging in gardens

Fast-growing hedge plants are perfect for creating privacy and structure in the garden. These plants grow quickly, providing a natural barrier and enhancing the garden's appearance. Here are some ideal uses for fast-growing hedge plants:

  • Border: Use fast-growing hedges to define the edges of a garden, creating a clear boundary.

Great plants to pair with swift-growing varieties

Fast-growing hedge plants are perfect for creating quick privacy in the garden. They can be combined with various plant types to enhance the garden's beauty and functionality. Consider pairing them with ornamental grasses like Miscanthus or Pennisetum. These grasses add texture and movement, complementing the dense structure of the hedge. Another great option is to plant flowering shrubs such as Buddleia or Weigela. These shrubs provide seasonal colour and attract pollinators, making the garden lively and vibrant.

Combining fast-growing hedges with tall perennials like Echinacea or Rudbeckia can create a layered effect, adding depth to the garden. The tall flowers rise above the hedge, offering a striking contrast. Additionally, low hedges like Buxus can be planted in front of the fast-growing varieties to create a neat border edge. This combination not only enhances privacy but also hides unsightly objects and defines the garden boundary effectively.

These plant combinations work well because they balance the rapid growth of the hedge with varied textures and colours. The result is a garden that offers both privacy and visual interest throughout the seasons. Fast-growing hedges for screening are ideal for those seeking a quick privacy hedge solution.

Location and soil tips for fast hedge development

Fast-growing hedge plants thrive in full sun to partial shade. Sunlight is crucial for their rapid growth, but too much shade can slow them down. Consider the wind exposure as well. These plants can be wind-sensitive, so planting them near a fence or wall can offer protection. The ideal soil for fast-growing hedge plants is well-drained and fertile. A mix of loam and sand is perfect, as it allows water to drain while retaining essential nutrients. Regular fertilisation boosts growth, ensuring the hedge fills quickly. Soil moisture is another key factor. These plants prefer consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Fast-growing hedge plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Testing the soil pH can guide any necessary adjustments. A balanced pH supports nutrient uptake, promoting vigorous growth. Choosing the right location and soil conditions ensures that fast-growing hedges, such as rapid-growth and quick-growing hedge plants, develop quickly, providing privacy and a beautiful garden boundary.

Best time and method to plant quick hedges

Fast-growing hedge plants are ideal for creating privacy in the garden. These plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are best. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting success. When planting fast-growing hedge plants, consider the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. The number of plants per metre depends on these factors. Check the Heijnen product page for specific planting distances. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. Dig a trench twice the width of the root ball. For planting, place the hedge plants at the correct distance, ensuring roots are spread out. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells. This helps the plants establish quickly and grow into a dense hedge. Fast-growing hedges provide a quick privacy solution, making them perfect for garden boundaries or hiding unsightly objects. Choose swift-growing hedge plants for a speedy transformation.

How to Manage Fast Growing Hedge and Upkeep

Fast-growing hedge plants are ideal for creating privacy and defining garden boundaries. These rapid-growth hedge plants require regular care to maintain their health and appearance. Proper care includes:

  • Watering: Fast-growing hedges need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by feeling the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly.
  • Pruning: Prune quick-growing hedge plants in late winter or early spring to encourage dense growth. Use sharp tools to remove dead or overgrown branches.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous hedge growth. Follow package instructions for the correct amount.
  • Dividing: If applicable, divide and replant every few years to prevent overcrowding and promote healthy growth.
  • Winter Protection: Protect tall hedges from harsh winter winds by using windbreaks or wrapping with burlap.
  • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring or autumn. Water well after moving to help establish roots.
