Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    Traits of white-toned decorative grasses

White flowering ornamental grasses are a stunning addition to any garden. These grasses grow in clumps, spreading gracefully to create a soft, elegant look. They can reach a width of up to 60 cm, making them perfect for white-flowering borders. As they develop, these grasses start as small tufts and gradually grow taller, reaching their full height in a few months. The blooming period for white flowering ornamental grasses typically occurs in late spring to early summer. Factors such as climate, temperature, and soil quality can influence the exact timing. In cooler climates, they may bloom later, while warmer areas might see earlier blooms. Proper care and soil preparation are essential for optimal flowering. The blooms of these grasses are often a soft white, with variations like cream-coloured or ivory-tinted depending on the specific type and growing conditions. Light exposure and soil type can affect the intensity of the white hue. While not known for a strong scent, some varieties may have a subtle fragrance, especially when the wind rustles through the leaves. This can add a gentle aroma to the garden, enhancing the overall sensory experience. Mature white flowering ornamental grasses can reach heights of 1 to 1.5 metres. Their height makes them ideal for creating layers in the garden, providing a backdrop for other plants. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care will ensure these grasses thrive, adding elegance to any garden setting.

White flowering ornamental grasses are a stunning addition to any garden. These grasses have unique leaf shapes, often narrow and arching, with a soft white or ivory tint. The leaf structure can vary, with some having a smooth texture while others may be slightly rough. In winter, many of these grasses lose their leaves, but some varieties remain evergreen, depending on the species and climate conditions.

The winter hardiness of white flowering ornamental grasses depends on several factors. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost and strong winds can affect their survival. The soil condition also plays a role; well-drained soil helps protect the roots from freezing.

These grasses are not always evergreen. Some lose their leaves annually, influenced by the type of grass and the local climate. In milder climates, certain species may retain their foliage throughout the year.

White flowering ornamental grasses are generally heat and drought-tolerant. Their origin and leaf structure, often with a waxy coating, help them conserve moisture. A deep root system allows them to access water from deeper soil layers, making them resilient in dry conditions.

These grasses are safe for gardens with children and pets. They are non-toxic and pose no danger when used in typical garden settings.

White flowering ornamental grasses contribute to biodiversity by providing habitats and food for insects. Their long blooming period and native-like properties support garden ecosystems, enhancing resistance to pests and diseases. They are ideal for creating white-flowering gardens and pure white borders, adding elegance and balance to any garden space.

    • Underplanting: Combine with taller plants for a layered effect in gardens with white colour accents.
    • Windbreak: Use as a windscreen to protect more delicate plants while adding a milky white touch.
    • Insect Corner: Create a biodiversity zone with these grasses, attracting beneficial insects.

Combining white ornamental grasses with colour

White flowering ornamental grasses can create stunning contrasts in the garden. These grasses, with their light-coloured and pure white tones, pair beautifully with a variety of plants. Consider combining them with deep green foliage plants like ferns or hostas. The rich green leaves highlight the soft white and ivory-tinted grasses, creating a striking visual effect. For a more colourful display, mix white flowering ornamental grasses with purple or blue flowering plants such as salvia or agapanthus. The cool tones of these flowers complement the milky white and snow white hues of the grasses, adding depth and interest to the garden. These combinations work well because the white flowering ornamental grasses provide a neutral backdrop that enhances the colours of surrounding plants. They are perfect for creating elegant borders and adding a touch of sophistication to gardens with white colour accents. Whether used in pure white borders or mixed with other shades, these grasses bring a sense of calm and elegance to any outdoor space.

Site and soil tips for healthy white tones

White flowering ornamental grasses thrive best in full sun. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily to maintain their vibrant white blooms. However, partial shade can be tolerated, especially in hotter climates. Wind can be a concern for these grasses, as strong gusts may damage their delicate flowers. Planting them near a fence or hedge can provide some protection. The ideal soil for white flowering ornamental grasses is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are preferred, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation helps promote growth and enhances the white tones. Soil moisture is crucial; these grasses prefer consistently moist soil but not overly wet. Wind and sun exposure can dry out the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. The pH preference for white flowering ornamental grasses is slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can ensure optimal growth. Incorporating these grasses into white-flowering gardens or borders adds a soft white, ivory-tinted elegance, creating a stunning visual effect in any garden setting.

When and how to plant white feature grasses

White flowering ornamental grasses can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The plant spacing for white flowering ornamental grasses depends on the type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the Heijnen product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Loosen the soil and remove weeds to ensure healthy growth. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the grass, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks, to help the roots establish. These grasses add a soft white touch to gardens with white colour accents, creating beautiful white-flowering borders. They are perfect for evening garden grasses, offering a light-coloured, serene look. Whether in pure white borders or gardens with ivory-tinted features, these grasses enhance any white-flowering garden.

Caring for White Flowering Ornamental Grasses Through the Seasons

White flowering ornamental grasses, also known as snow-white ornamental grasses or pearl-white garden grasses, add elegance to any garden. Proper care ensures their beauty lasts.

    • Watering: These grasses need regular watering, especially in dry periods. Check soil moisture to determine if watering is needed. Water deeply but avoid overwatering.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead foliage. Use sharp shears for clean cuts. Pruning encourages new growth and maintains shape.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Fertilise once a year to promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising as it can harm the plant.
    • Dividing: Divide every 3-4 years in spring to rejuvenate and prevent overcrowding. This process helps maintain vigour and encourages more blooms.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, add mulch around the base to protect roots from frost. This helps the plant survive harsh winters.
    • Transplanting: Best done in spring or autumn. Water well after transplanting and ensure the new location has similar conditions.
White flowering ornamental grasses are perfect for white-flowering gardens and pure white borders. They create stunning white-flowering borders and add soft white accents to any garden. Consider adding these grasses to enhance gardens with white colour accents. For those looking to buy white flowering ornamental grasses, they are a beautiful addition to any garden.
