Fargesia Nitida (bamboo)
If you want non-invasive bamboo in your garden, consider the Fargesia Nitida. It is a very bushy plant, as it is called, but the narrow, gray-green leaves are characteristic. And the older the plant gets, the more the stems turn to blue-purple. A beautiful sight. We have no idea how high you want the hedge to be in your garden, but the maximum height of the Fargesia Nitida is about 3 meters. Quite a long way!
When is the best time to plant a bamboo Fargesia Nitida?
You can plant this bamboo for most of the year, from late February / early March to late autumn. If you don't put it in the ground until the end of fall, provide a layer of leaves or straw on the roots.
Tips
The bamboo plant is only suitable for high and wide hedges, not for low and narrow hedges. Just so you know. If you really want a narrow and low variant, it is best to buy another hedge plant.
It does not matter where you plant the Fargesia Nitida, as long as the soil is well drained and rich in humus.
Please keep in mind that it cannot withstand northern and eastern winds.
A little water every day does not have a lot of effect. Better give a lot of water at once, than a little bit every day.
Advice & Care
- As we already wrote, the plant can to grow in any soil type, but it likes a humus-rich soil. Before planting, you can prepare the soil with some compost. It will grow better. In addition, you can give the plant an organic fertilizer every now and then.
- A young bamboo hedge depends on the water the roots will receive. Therefore, serve it generously. Make sure to pre-soak the root ball with water before putting it in the ground. Then it already has a head start. Water it regularly if you have planted it during a dry period.
- It is best to prune the Fargesia Nitida in May or June.

We know for sure: the Fargesia Nitida will look great in your garden. It combines beautifully with the other plants, shrubs and flowers. You really won't regret it.
