Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Features of subtle, green-toned nectar providers

Green flowering bee plants are a wonderful addition to any garden. These fresh green bee nectar plants grow in various forms, often spreading widely to create a lush appearance. They develop from small shoots into verdant bee-friendly plants, reaching maturity over several months. The growth process is influenced by factors like soil quality and sunlight. The blooming period for these green-flowering plants for natural gardens typically occurs in late spring to early summer. Climate and weather conditions, such as temperature and rainfall, play a significant role in their flowering. Proper care and soil preparation can enhance their blooming potential. The flowers of these bee plants with green flowers come in various shades, including lime green, apple green, and moss green. The specific hue depends on the plant species, soil conditions, and light exposure. These subtle green nectar plants add a unique touch to green flowering gardens and borders. While not all green flowering bee plants are known for their scent, some do offer a mild fragrance. The intensity of the aroma can vary based on the plant's age and health. These plants contribute to biodiversity by attracting bees and other pollinators. In terms of height, green flowering bee plants can vary greatly. Some may grow to a modest height, while others can reach several feet tall. The choice of location and care practices, such as watering and pruning, affect their ultimate size. These plants are perfect for creating soft green borders and gardens with green colour accents.

Green flowering bee plants are a unique addition to any garden. Their leaves come in various shapes and sizes, often displaying shades of lime green, apple green, and moss green. The leaf structure can be smooth or slightly hairy, which helps in retaining moisture. These plants may lose their leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate. In milder climates, some may remain evergreen, adding a touch of green to the garden year-round.

When it comes to winter hardiness, green flowering bee plants vary. Some can withstand frost, while others are more sensitive. Factors like temperature, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a role. It's essential to choose the right species for the local climate to ensure they thrive during colder months.

These plants are generally heat and drought-tolerant, thanks to their deep root systems and sometimes waxy or hairy leaves. Originating from various climates, they adapt well to dry conditions, making them suitable for gardens with limited water supply.

Green flowering bee plants are safe for gardens with children and pets. While some plants can be toxic, these are generally harmless when used in typical garden settings. Always ensure proper handling and placement to maintain safety.

These plants significantly contribute to biodiversity. They provide nectar and pollen for pollinators, supporting ecosystems and enhancing garden resilience against pests. By mimicking natural habitats, they offer food and shelter for various creatures, promoting a balanced ecosystem.

Where to use green blooms in calm gardens

Green flowering bee plants are a wonderful addition to any garden. These fresh green bee nectar plants not only attract bees but also add a subtle touch of colour. Here are some ways to use verdant bee-friendly plants in the garden:

    • Use green flowering bee plants in borders to create soft green borders and gardens.

    • Consider them as a solitary feature to enhance a garden with green colour accents.
    • Use them as a hedge or boundary for a green-hued effect.
    • Place them in pots or planters for a fresh green touch on patios.
    • Incorporate them as underplanting for a lush, dark green layer.
    • Use them as a windscreen to protect other plants while adding lime green tones.
    • Create an insect corner with these plants to boost biodiversity.

For those looking to buy green flowering bee plants, these options can transform any garden into a haven for bees while maintaining a calm and natural aesthetic.

Pairing green flowers with rich companions

Green flowering bee plants can create a stunning effect in the garden when combined with other plant types. These green-toned plants for pollinators work well with vibrant flowers like purple coneflowers or orange marigolds. The subtle green nectar plants provide a calming backdrop, allowing the brighter colours to pop. For a more natural look, consider pairing green-flowering plants for natural gardens with grasses like miscanthus or carex. These combinations not only attract bees but also add texture and movement to the garden. Bee plants with green flowers are perfect for creating green flowering borders. Mixing them with plants like echinacea or rudbeckia can enhance the garden's visual appeal. The contrast between the green-hued plants and the colourful blooms creates a balanced and harmonious look. In a garden with green colour accents, these plants can be used to soften the edges and create a cohesive design. The combination of green flowering bee plants with other species is not only beautiful but also beneficial for pollinators. The fresh green, lime green, and apple green tones provide a serene setting, while the diverse plant types ensure a continuous supply of nectar. This makes the garden a haven for bees and other pollinators, supporting biodiversity and enhancing the garden's ecological value.

Ideal soil and shade for green bee flowers

Green flowering bee plants thrive best in full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth and flowering. Too much shade can reduce blooms, while too much sun can dry them out. These plants are not very wind-sensitive, but strong winds can damage them. Planting them near a fence or hedge can provide protection. The ideal soil for green flowering bee plants is well-drained and rich in organic matter. A mix of sand and loam works well. Regular fertilisation helps them grow better. The soil should be moist but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry the soil, so regular watering is important, especially in dry periods. These plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. The pH affects nutrient availability, so testing the soil can help maintain the right balance. Green flowering gardens benefit from these plants, adding subtle green nectar plants to soft green borders and gardens. They bring a fresh green touch to any garden with green colour accents, from lime green to moss green shades.

    Planting tips and timing

Green flowering bee plants can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For plants with root balls, the best time is spring or autumn. The timing depends on the plant type and local climate. When planting, consider the plant's size and growth rate. The number of plants per metre or square metre is usually listed on the plant's product page. For green flowering bee plants, proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and mix compost into the soil. After planting, water the plants thoroughly to help them establish. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks. Green flowering gardens benefit from these plants, adding subtle green nectar plants to attract pollinators. Green-toned plants for pollinators create a vibrant garden with green colour accents. Whether in soft green borders or a garden with green-hued plants, these additions bring life and colour to any space.

Maintenance of Green Flowering Bee Plants

Green flowering bee plants are a wonderful addition to any garden. They require specific care to thrive and attract bees. Here are some tips for their maintenance:

    • Watering: These plants need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water.
    • Pruning: Prune in early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to remove dead or damaged branches.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and mid-summer. This helps the plants grow strong and produce more flowers.
    • Dividing: Divide the plants every 3-4 years to prevent overcrowding and promote healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, cover the base with mulch to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water well after moving to help the plant settle in its new spot.

These verdant bee-friendly plants not only add beauty with their green-hued blooms but also support local bee populations. Consider adding them to green flowering gardens or soft green borders for a vibrant touch. For those looking to buy green flowering bee plants, they can be a perfect choice for enhancing a garden with green colour accents.
