Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    What are white bee plants?

White flowering bee plants are a wonderful addition to any garden. These plants are known for their beautiful white blooms that attract bees and other pollinators. They come in various shades like snow white, ivory white, and cream-coloured, making them perfect for creating a garden with white colour accents. Some popular genera include Achillea, Phlox, and Digitalis. These plants are also referred to as white-toned bee-friendly plants. They are essential for pollinator gardens, providing bees with the nectar they need. White flowers for pollinator gardens not only enhance the beauty of the space but also support the ecosystem. In the garden, white flowering bee plants are used to create pure white borders and gardens. They can be planted in white flowering borders or mixed with other colours for a striking effect. These bee-friendly white flowering plants are ideal for those looking to add light blooms for bees. Consider adding flowering bee plants to your garden to enjoy their beauty and benefits.

    Traits of white-toned nectar flowers

White flowering bee plants are a beautiful addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading wide to create a lush appearance. They can range from compact bushes to taller, more open structures, providing a diverse habitat for bees. The development of white flowering bee plants begins in early spring. As temperatures rise, these plants start to sprout, reaching maturity by late spring or early summer. The growth rate can depend on factors like soil quality and sunlight exposure. White flowering bee plants typically bloom from late spring to early summer. The exact timing can vary based on climate, weather conditions, and care. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil can encourage earlier blooming. The blooms of these plants are often a striking white, with shades ranging from snow white to ivory white. The colour can be influenced by the plant variety, soil conditions, and light exposure. Proper care ensures vibrant, long-lasting blooms. While not all white flowering bee plants are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a subtle fragrance. This can be affected by the plant's age and the environment, adding an extra layer of attraction for bees. Mature white flowering bee plants can reach various heights, depending on the species. Some may grow to a modest height, while others can become quite tall, adding depth to garden borders. Choosing the right location and providing proper care will help these plants thrive.

White flowering bee plants are a beautiful addition to any garden. Their leaves can vary in shape, often being oval or lance-shaped, with a smooth or slightly serrated edge. The colour of the leaves is typically a rich green, providing a striking contrast to the white blooms. The texture can be smooth or slightly hairy, depending on the species. These plants usually retain their leaves throughout the winter, adding year-round interest to the garden.

In terms of winter hardiness, white flowering bee plants are generally resilient. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost can be challenging. The choice of species, wind exposure, and soil conditions all play a role in their ability to survive winter. A sheltered spot with well-drained soil can enhance their hardiness.

These plants are often evergreen, meaning they keep their leaves all year. This characteristic depends on the species and the local climate. In milder climates, they are more likely to remain green throughout the year.

White flowering bee plants are also known for their heat and drought tolerance. Originating from various climates, they have adapted to withstand dry conditions. Their leaf structure, often with a waxy coating or fine hairs, helps reduce water loss. A deep root system allows them to access moisture from deeper soil layers.

Regarding toxicity, white flowering bee plants are generally safe for gardens. They pose no threat to children or pets when used normally. However, it's always wise to supervise young children and pets around any plants.

These plants play a vital role in supporting biodiversity. They provide nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators, contributing to a balanced ecosystem. By mimicking natural habitats, they help increase garden resilience against pests and diseases, offering food and shelter for various wildlife.

Where to use white bee plants in landscape

White flowering bee plants are a beautiful addition to any garden. These snow-white plants for bees not only attract pollinators but also add a touch of elegance. Here are some ways to use these pure white nectar plants in the garden:

    • Border: Use white flowering bee plants to create stunning white flowering borders. They provide a soft white backdrop that highlights other garden colours.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a striking effect. This creates a garden with white colour accents that bees will love.
    • Solitary: Place a single white bee plant as a focal point. Its ivory-hued blooms can stand out beautifully in any setting.
    • Pot or Planter: Grow in pots or planters for flexibility. This allows for easy movement and placement in the garden.
    • Underplanting: Use as underplanting for taller plants. The milky white flowers can complement larger plants and add depth.
    • Insect Corner: Create an insect-friendly zone with white bee plants. Their light blooms for bees are perfect for pollinator gardens.

Consider these ideas when planning a garden with white flowering bee plants. They are not only bee-friendly but also enhance the beauty of any outdoor space. For those looking to buy white flowering bee plants, these options offer versatility and charm.

Pairing with bold or soft floral companions

White flowering bee plants can create stunning combinations in the garden. These white-toned bee-friendly plants pair beautifully with both bold and soft floral companions. For a striking contrast, consider planting them alongside deep purple salvias or vibrant red poppies. These combinations not only enhance the visual appeal but also attract a variety of pollinators. For a more subtle look, mix white flowering bee plants with soft pink peonies or pale blue delphiniums. This creates a gentle and calming effect, perfect for a white flowering garden. The light blooms for bees, such as cream-coloured or ivory-hued flowers, add elegance to any garden with white colour accents. These combinations work well because the white flowers for pollinator gardens provide a neutral backdrop that highlights the colours of other plants. Additionally, bee-friendly white flowering plants are essential for supporting pollinators, making them a valuable addition to any garden. Whether creating pure white borders and gardens or adding white flowering borders, these plants offer versatility and beauty.

Site and soil for white bloom success

White flowering bee plants thrive best in full sun. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily to produce their light blooms for bees. If planted in partial shade, they may not flower as abundantly. Wind can affect these white bee plants, so consider planting them near a fence or hedge to provide some shelter. The ideal soil for white flowering bee plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. A mix of loam and sand is perfect, as it allows water to drain while retaining enough moisture. Regular fertilisation helps these snow-white plants for bees grow strong. Soil moisture is crucial for white flowering bee plants. They prefer consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. These pure white nectar plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. A pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal. Testing the soil can ensure the right conditions for a garden with white colour accents. Adjusting the pH with lime or sulphur can help achieve the best results for white-flowered gardens.

Planting white bee flowers – tips and care

White flowering bee plants can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting. The distance between white bee plants depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Check the Heijnen product page for specific plant spacing details. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Loosen the soil and mix in compost to improve drainage and nutrients. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant at the same depth as in the pot. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells. White flowering gardens benefit from these bee-friendly plants, adding soft white, ivory-hued, and cream-coloured accents. They create pure white borders and gardens, attracting bees with their light blooms. Regular care ensures a thriving garden with white colour accents.

Maintenance of White Flowering Bee Plants to Preserve Freshness and Nectar

White flowering bee plants, also known as snow-white plants for bees, are a beautiful addition to any garden. These pure white nectar plants require specific care to thrive.

    • Care and Maintenance: White flowering bee plants need well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Regularly check soil moisture and ensure it is not too dry or too wet.
    • Pruning Advice: Prune these plants in early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to remove dead or damaged branches.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. This helps maintain healthy growth and enhances nectar production.
    • Watering: Water deeply once a week, especially during dry spells. Check the soil; if it feels dry, it's time to water.
    • Dividing: Divide plants every 3-4 years in autumn to prevent overcrowding and promote healthy blooms.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring. Water well after transplanting and provide extra care until established.
For those looking to enhance their white flowering gardens or create pure white borders, consider adding these white bee plants. They not only add beauty but also attract beneficial pollinators. To buy white flowering bee plants, explore local nurseries or online options.

Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.
