Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

What are Partial Shade Bee Plants?

Partial shade bee plants are flowers that thrive in areas with limited sunlight, making them perfect for gardens with dappled light or morning sun. These plants are essential for attracting bees, providing them with nectar and pollen. Some well-known genera include Pulmonaria, Brunnera, Digitalis, Helleborus, and Lamium. These plants are also known as bees' plants for partial sun and are ideal for creating a bee-friendly environment in semi-shaded gardens.

Partial shade bee plants are used to support pollinators by offering nectar-rich blooms. They are perfect for light shade areas where full sun plants might struggle. These plants not only enhance the beauty of a garden but also play a crucial role in supporting the ecosystem. By planting bee plants for partial shade, gardeners can ensure a steady supply of nectar for bees, even in less sunny spots. Popular choices include light shade nectar plants and part-shade perennials for bees, which are excellent for attracting pollinators in filtered light conditions.

Traits of bee plants that thrive in part sun

Partial shade bee plants are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants grow well in areas with dappled light or morning sun. They spread moderately, creating a lush environment for bees. The development of these plants begins in early spring, with shoots emerging as temperatures rise. By summer, they reach maturity, providing nectar for bees. The blooming period for partial shade bee plants varies. Most bloom from late spring to early autumn. Factors like climate, temperature, and soil care influence their flowering. In cooler climates, they may bloom later, while warmer areas see earlier blooms. Proper care and soil preparation enhance their flowering potential. The colours of these plants range from soft pastels to vibrant hues. The specific shade depends on the plant type and soil conditions. Light and climate also play a role in the intensity of the colours. Regular care ensures the best display of blooms. Some partial shade bee plants are known for their fragrance. The scent can vary from subtle to strong, depending on the plant variety and growing conditions. This aroma attracts bees and adds to the garden's biodiversity. Mature partial shade bee plants can reach different heights, often between 30 to 90 cm. Their height depends on the plant type and care. Choosing the right location and combining them with other plants enhances the garden's visual appeal. Consider buying partial shade bee plants to support local pollinators and create a thriving garden environment.

Partial shade bee plants are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants have unique leaves that adapt to varying light conditions. The leaves often have a broad shape, allowing them to capture more light. They can be a deep green or lighter, depending on the species and light exposure. Some have a waxy surface or fine hairs to reduce water loss, which is crucial for survival in partial shade. In winter, many of these plants retain their leaves, providing year-round interest and habitat for wildlife.

When it comes to winter hardiness, partial shade bee plants vary. Some can withstand cold temperatures, while others are more sensitive to frost. Factors like wind exposure and soil conditions play a role in their survival. Well-drained soil and sheltered spots can enhance their resilience. These plants are often evergreen, maintaining their foliage throughout the year, which is beneficial for bees seeking shelter and food.

Partial shade bee plants are generally heat and drought-tolerant. Their origin in shaded environments means they have adapted to conserve water. Deep root systems and leaf structures help them thrive in dry conditions. They are safe for gardens with children and pets, as they are non-toxic under normal gardening conditions.

These plants significantly contribute to biodiversity. They provide nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators, supporting the ecosystem. By mimicking natural habitats, they help maintain ecological balance and increase garden resilience against pests. Partial shade bee plants are essential for creating a thriving, bee-friendly garden.

Best places to grow bee-friendly flowers in light shade

Partial shade bee plants are perfect for gardens that don't get full sun all day. These plants can thrive in areas with filtered light or morning sun, making them ideal for semi-shaded gardens. Here are some ways to use these bee-friendly plants in your garden:

    • Border: Use partial shade bee plants to create a colourful border that attracts bees.
    • Group planting: Plant in groups to create a vibrant area that supports pollinators.
    • Underplanting: Add these plants under taller trees or shrubs to provide nectar in shaded spots.
    • Pot or planter: Grow in pots to easily move them to the best light conditions.
    • Insect corner: Designate a section of the garden for bee plants to boost biodiversity.
These semi-shaded bee-friendly plants not only enhance the garden's beauty but also support local bee populations. Consider adding light-shade nectar plants to your garden to create a haven for pollinators. For those looking to expand their garden, it's easy to buy partial shade bee plants online or at local nurseries. Choose the best bee plants for partial shade to ensure a thriving, bee-friendly garden.

Good companions for dappled light zones

Partial shade bee plants can be beautifully combined with various other plant types to create a vibrant garden. Consider pairing them with ferns and hostas, which thrive in similar light conditions. These plants provide a lush backdrop, enhancing the colours of bee plants for partial shade. Another great combination is with astilbes and heucheras. These nectar-rich plants for light shade offer contrasting textures and colours, making the garden more appealing to bees and other pollinators.

Using semi-shaded bee plants alongside grasses like carex or hakonechloa can add movement and interest. These grasses sway gently in the breeze, creating a dynamic environment that attracts bees. Additionally, combining bee-friendly plants in filtered light with shade-tolerant herbs like mint or lemon balm can provide both beauty and fragrance. These herbs are not only attractive to bees but also useful in the kitchen.

These combinations work well because they create a balanced ecosystem. The mix of textures, colours, and heights ensures that the garden remains interesting throughout the seasons. Moreover, the presence of nectar plants for semi-shaded gardens supports a healthy bee population, which is essential for pollination. By choosing the best bee plants for partial shade, the garden becomes a haven for bees and a delight for the eyes.

Soil and care for partial shade success

Partial shade bee plants thrive in areas with filtered light or morning sun. These semi-shaded bee-friendly plants need protection from harsh afternoon sun. Factors like nearby trees or structures can provide the right light conditions. Wind sensitivity is a concern for light-shade nectar plants. To protect them, consider planting near windbreaks or using garden screens. The ideal soil for bee plants for partial shade is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality. Regular fertilisation supports growth and blooming. Nectar-rich plants for light shade prefer moist soil. Wind and sun can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Bee-friendly plants in filtered light thrive in slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Testing soil pH ensures it meets plant needs. Adjusting pH with lime or sulphur can optimise conditions. With the right care, these bloomers for morning sun attract pollinators and enhance garden biodiversity.

How and when to plant bee plants in part sun

Partial shade bee plants can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For plants with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, climate, and location affect planting. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost for optimal growth. When considering plant distance, the type and size of the bee plants for partial shade are crucial. Fast-growing varieties may need more space, while smaller ones can be closer. Check the Heijnen product page for specific plant spacing details. Proper soil preparation is vital for nectar-rich plants for light shade. Loosen the soil and mix in organic matter to improve fertility. This helps bee-friendly plants in filtered light to thrive. For planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant at the same depth as in its pot. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain moisture, especially during dry spells. This ensures healthy growth of pollinator plants for dappled light.

Maintenance of Partial Shade Bee Plants

Partial shade bee plants thrive in areas with filtered light. Proper care ensures they flourish and attract bees.

    • Watering: These plants need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly.
    • Pruning: Prune in early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to remove dead or damaged stems, promoting healthy blooms.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. This supports growth and enhances nectar production, attracting more bees.
    • Dividing: Divide plants every 3-4 years in autumn. This prevents overcrowding and maintains vigour.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring. Water well after moving to reduce transplant shock.
These semi-shaded bee-friendly plants are perfect for gardens with dappled light. They provide essential nectar for pollinators, making them a valuable addition to any garden. Consider adding these nectar-rich plants for light shade to support local bee populations. For those looking to enhance their garden, it's possible to buy partial shade bee plants online or at local nurseries.
