Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Traits of bright orange and warm-toned border plants

Orange flowering border plants are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading widely to create vibrant orange flowers that brighten up warm-toned borders. They can range from compact to bushy, depending on the species and cultivar. The development of orange flowering border plants begins in early spring. They start as small shoots and gradually grow into mature plants by late summer. The growth rate can be influenced by factors like soil quality, sunlight, and regular watering. These plants typically bloom in late summer, with the exact timing depending on climate and weather conditions. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil can encourage earlier blooming. The age of the plant and proper care also play a role in the blooming period. The bloom colours of these plants are diverse, ranging from apricot-coloured to fiery orange. Factors such as soil pH, light exposure, and the specific cultivar can affect the intensity of the colour. Proper care ensures the brightest display of colours. Orange flowering border plants are not particularly known for their scent. However, some varieties may have a mild fragrance, which can add a subtle aroma to the garden. The intensity of the scent can vary based on the plant's age and health. When fully grown, these plants can reach different heights, often between 30 to 90 cm. The mature height depends on the species and growing conditions. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care can help achieve the desired height, enhancing the garden's visual appeal.

Orange flowering border plants bring a vibrant touch to any garden. The leaves of these plants can vary greatly, with shapes ranging from elongated to oval. Leaf colour often complements the bright orange flowers, with shades of green that can be glossy or matte. The texture of the leaves can be smooth or slightly hairy, depending on the species. Some orange flowering border plants are deciduous, losing their leaves in winter, while others remain evergreen, providing year-round interest. Factors like climate and plant variety influence whether they keep their foliage through the colder months.

Winter hardiness is crucial for orange flowering border plants. These plants can withstand mild frost, but severe cold can be damaging. The choice of plant species, soil conditions, and wind exposure all play a role in their frost sensitivity. In areas with harsh winters, selecting hardy varieties is essential to ensure survival.

Many orange flowering border plants are drought-tolerant, thanks to their origins in warmer climates. Their leaf structure, often with a waxy coating or fine hairs, helps reduce water loss. A deep root system allows them to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making them suitable for gardens with low water availability.

Regarding safety, orange flowering border plants are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They can be enjoyed without concern, as long as standard gardening practices are followed.

These plants also support biodiversity by attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. Their long blooming period provides a consistent food source, while their structure offers shelter and nesting opportunities for various garden creatures. Incorporating orange flowering border plants into a garden can enhance its ecological balance and resilience.

How to use orange flowering plants for contrast

Orange flowering border plants can add a vibrant touch to any garden. These bright orange garden borders create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Here are some ways to use these fire-coloured border flowers effectively in the garden:

    • Border: Use orange flowering border plants to create a striking edge along pathways or garden beds. The vibrant orange flowers will stand out beautifully against green foliage.
    • Group Planting: Plant in clusters for a bold statement. This method enhances the fiery orange effect and creates a cohesive look.
    • Solitary Planting: Use as a focal point in the garden. A single plant with vibrant orange flowers can draw attention and add interest.
    • Hedge or Screen: Create a natural privacy screen with these plants. The warm-toned borders will provide both beauty and function.
    • Container Planting: Place in pots or planters for flexibility. This allows for easy movement and arrangement to suit different garden areas.
    • Insect Corner: Attract beneficial insects by planting in a designated biodiversity zone. The bright orange flowering plants will draw pollinators.

Consider adding orange border flowers for late summer gardens to enjoy their vibrant display. Whether choosing apricot-coloured, terracotta-toned, or mandarin orange varieties, these plants will enhance any garden with their warm orange borders and gardens.

Pairing orange blooms with purple, blue or white

Orange flowering border plants can create stunning contrasts in the garden when combined with other colours. Pairing these vibrant orange flowers with purple plants like Salvia or Verbena can create a striking visual effect. The deep purple tones complement the warm orange garden borders, making them stand out even more. Blue flowers such as Delphiniums or Agapanthus also work well, providing a cool contrast to the fiery orange hues. For a softer look, white flowers like Shasta Daisies or white Cosmos can be used to highlight the bright orange flowering plants, creating a fresh and clean appearance.

These combinations are not only visually appealing but also enhance the overall aesthetic of orange-flowering gardens. The mix of colours can make gardens with orange colour accents feel more dynamic and lively. Using apricot-coloured or terracotta-toned plants alongside mandarin-toned edge plants can add depth and warmth to the garden. This approach is perfect for those looking to create orange border flowers for late summer gardens, as the warm tones can evoke a sense of warmth and vibrancy. By carefully selecting complementary colours, orange-flowering borders can become a focal point in any garden.

Best soil and site for orange border success

Orange flowering border plants thrive in full sun, needing at least six hours of sunlight daily. This ensures vibrant orange flowers and healthy growth. If planted in partial shade, they may not bloom as brightly. Wind can affect these plants, so consider planting them near a fence or hedge for protection. The ideal soil for orange flowering border plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports growth, especially in gardens with orange colour accents. Soil moisture is crucial; these plants prefer consistently moist soil but not overly wet. Wind and sun can dry the soil quickly, so mulching helps retain moisture. The pH preference for orange flowering border plants is slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0 to 7.0. This range supports nutrient uptake, enhancing the fiery orange and apricot-coloured blooms. Adjusting soil pH with lime or sulphur can optimise conditions for warm-toned borders. Incorporating these elements ensures a stunning display of bright orange garden borders, adding a fire-coloured touch to any garden.

Planting time and spacing for vibrant orange

Orange flowering border plants bring a lively touch to any garden. These plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. The spacing of orange border plants depends on the type, size at planting, and growth rate. It's important to check the plant properties on the Heijnen product page for the number of plants per metre. Proper soil preparation is key for these vibrant orange flowers. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells to help establish the plants. With the right care, these mandarin-toned edge plants will thrive, creating warm orange garden borders that are a feast for the eyes.

Ongoing Care for Orange Flowering Border Plants

Orange flowering border plants bring vibrant colour to any garden. Proper care ensures these bright orange garden borders thrive.

    • Watering: Check soil moisture regularly. Water deeply when the top inch is dry. Early morning is best to prevent evaporation.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools for best results.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Repeat every 6-8 weeks during the growing season for lush blooms.
    • Dividing: Divide plants every 3-4 years in early spring to maintain vigour. This helps prevent overcrowding.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring. Water well after moving to reduce transplant shock.
These fire-coloured border flowers add warmth to gardens with orange colour accents. Consider apricot-coloured or terracotta-toned varieties for a unique touch. For those looking to buy orange flowering border plants, ensure they suit the garden's climate and soil conditions. With the right care, these plants will create stunning orange-flowering gardens.
