Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

What defines semi shadow climbing plants?

Partial shade climbers are plants that thrive in areas with limited sunlight. These plants are perfect for gardens that receive morning sun or filtered light. They are known for their ability to grow in conditions where full sun is not available. Some popular genera include Lonicera, Clematis, and Hydrangea. These climbers are versatile and can adapt to various light conditions, making them ideal for many gardens. Partial shade climbers are also referred to as part-shade vertical climbers or light-shade climbing plants. These terms highlight their ability to grow in less sunny areas. They are often used to cover walls, fences, or trellises, adding vertical interest to the garden. Climbing plants for partial shade can create a lush and green environment, even in areas with limited sunlight. In the garden, partial shade climbers are used to enhance spaces with their beautiful foliage and flowers. They are perfect for creating privacy screens or adding height to garden designs. Some of the best climbing plants for partial shade gardens include shade-tolerant vines and perennial climbers for light shade. These plants are not only functional but also add aesthetic value to any garden setting.

Traits of part-shade vertical plant varieties

Partial shade climbers, also known as semi-shaded climbing plants or dappled light wall plants, are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants grow by attaching themselves to structures like trellises or walls. They can spread widely, creating a lush green cover. The growth form of these climbers varies, with some having dense foliage while others are more sparse. The development of partial shade climbers begins in early spring. They start with small shoots that gradually grow into long vines. By summer, they reach their full height, providing a beautiful backdrop in the garden. The growth rate depends on factors like soil quality and care. Partial shade climbers typically bloom in late spring to early summer. The blooming period can be influenced by climate, temperature, and the plant's age. Proper soil preparation and regular care ensure a healthy bloom. The flowers of these climbers come in various colours, including white, pink, and purple. The bloom colour can be affected by the plant species, soil conditions, and light exposure. Regular maintenance helps maintain vibrant colours. Some partial shade climbers are known for their pleasant fragrance. The scent can vary in intensity and is often strongest during the blooming period. This fragrance can attract pollinators, enhancing garden biodiversity. Mature partial shade climbers can reach heights of 3 to 5 metres. The final height depends on the plant variety and care. These climbers are ideal for creating layered garden designs and can be combined with other plants for a stunning effect.

Partial shade climbers are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These climbing plants for partial shade have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be heart-shaped or oval, often with a glossy green hue. Some light shade climbers have variegated patterns, adding visual interest. The leaf structure can be smooth or slightly hairy, helping them adapt to different light conditions. In winter, many semi shadow climbing plants retain their leaves, providing year-round greenery, while others may shed leaves depending on the species and climate.

Winter hardiness is crucial for partial shade climbers. These shade-tolerant vines can withstand mild frost, but extreme cold can be challenging. Factors like temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure affect their survival. Well-drained soil and sheltered locations enhance their resilience. Some part-shade vertical climbers are evergreen, keeping their foliage throughout the year, while others are deciduous, losing leaves in colder months. Climate and species choice influence this trait.

Heat and drought tolerance vary among light-shade climbing plants. Originating from diverse habitats, some have waxy or hairy leaves to reduce water loss. Deep root systems help them access moisture, making them suitable for part-sun conditions. Partial-sun-friendly climbers are generally non-toxic, safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no risk, ensuring a safe environment.

Partial shade climbers contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for wildlife. They mimic natural habitats, supporting insects and birds. These perennial climbers for light shade enhance garden ecosystems, promoting balance and resistance to pests. By choosing the best climbing plants for partial shade gardens, a thriving, biodiverse garden can be achieved.

Best places to grow climbers in dappled light

Pairing part-shade climbers with other plants

Partial shade climbers can create a stunning garden when combined with other plant types. These climbing plants for partial shade thrive alongside ferns and hostas, which also enjoy filtered light. Adding shade-tolerant vines like clematis can enhance the vertical interest in the garden. For a more diverse look, consider pairing part-shade vertical climbers with trailing plants for part sun, such as ivy or vinca. A beautiful combination includes light-shade climbing plants with astilbes, which offer a contrast in texture and colour. Another option is to mix semi shadow climbing plants with perennial climbers for light shade, like honeysuckle, to add fragrance and attract pollinators. These combinations work well because they balance the garden's light conditions, ensuring all plants receive the right amount of sun. Climbing plants for filtered light can soften the appearance of walls or fences, while climbers for morning sun can thrive in areas with limited direct sunlight. This mix of plants creates a harmonious and lush garden environment, perfect for enjoying throughout the seasons.

Site and soil for light-shade climbing success

Partial shade climbers thrive in areas with morning sun and afternoon shade. These semi-shaded climbing plants prefer dappled light, making them ideal for gardens with filtered light. Wind can affect these climbers, so planting near a wall or fence can provide protection. The best soil for partial shade climbers is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Regular fertilisation helps these climbing plants for partial shade grow strong. Soil moisture is crucial; ensure the ground is neither too dry nor too wet. Wind and sun can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Partial shade climbers prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Testing the soil pH ensures it meets the needs of these shade-tolerant climbers. Adjusting the pH with lime or sulphur can create the perfect environment for perennial climbers for light shade. These trailing plants for part sun are perfect for part-shade façades, offering beauty and greenery. With the right conditions, partial-sun-friendly climbers can transform any garden space.

    Planting time and technique

Partial shade climbers are versatile plants that can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls or bare roots, the best time to plant is in spring or autumn. When planting, consider the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. The number of plants per metre or square metre is usually listed on the plant's product page. The distance between partial shade climbers depends on their growth habits. For instance, fast-growing climbers need more space than slow-growing ones. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and mix compost into the soil. When planting, place the climber at the same depth as it was in the pot. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially during dry spells. This helps the roots establish well. With the right care, partial shade climbers like part-shade vertical climbers and light-shade climbing plants will thrive, adding beauty to any garden.

Maintenance for Balanced Growth of Partial Shade Climbers

Partial shade climbers, also known as semi-shaded climbing plants or dappled light wall plants, thrive in areas with limited sunlight. Proper care ensures healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

    • Watering: These climbers need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or weak stems. This encourages new growth and maintains shape.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and mid-summer. This supports growth and flowering. Use the recommended amount to avoid over-fertilisation.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Ensure the new location has similar light conditions. Water well after moving.
    • Winter Protection: In colder areas, protect roots with mulch. This helps retain moisture and insulates against frost.
    • Dividing: Divide perennial climbers every few years in spring to rejuvenate and control size.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding these versatile plants. They are perfect as climbing plants for partial shade, climbers for morning sun, or trailing plants for part sun. Buy partial shade climbers to create a stunning garden display.
