Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

What defines evergreenplants and all-season garden plants?

Evergreen plants are a popular choice for gardens because they keep their leaves all year round. These plants, also known as all-season greenery or winter-hardy green plants, provide structure and colour even in the cold months. They are often used to create a lush look in the garden, offering a backdrop for other plants. Evergreen plants are sometimes called year-round green plants or winter greenery. They are known for their persistent foliage, meaning they do not shed their leaves like deciduous plants. This makes them ideal for creating privacy screens or hedges. In the garden, evergreen plants are used for their lasting foliage and ability to maintain a green appearance throughout the year. They are perfect for adding structure and are often chosen for their easy-care nature. Popular genera include Hedera, Buxus, Carex, Heuchera, and Skimmia. These plants are excellent for those looking for garden plants that don’t go bare, providing a consistent green presence in any garden setting.

Key traits of winter-hardy and evergreen outdoor species

Evergreen plants, also known as year-round green outdoor plants or non-deciduous garden plants, are a popular choice for gardens. These plants maintain their foliage throughout the year, providing consistent greenery. They grow in various forms, from small shrubs to tall trees, and can spread widely, offering excellent coverage. The development of evergreen plants begins with new shoots in spring. As they mature, these plants retain their leaves, unlike deciduous varieties. This persistent foliage is a key feature, making them ideal for structure and easy-care gardens. Evergreen plants bloom in different months, depending on the species. Factors like climate, weather conditions, temperature, and soil care influence their flowering. In milder climates, some may bloom in late winter or early spring, while others wait for warmer months. The bloom colours of evergreen plants vary widely. They can range from subtle whites and creams to vibrant reds and yellows. The type of plant, soil quality, light exposure, and care all play a role in the intensity and hue of the blooms. While not all evergreen plants are known for their scent, some do offer fragrant leaves or flowers. The intensity of the aroma can depend on the plant's age, the season, and environmental conditions. Mature evergreen plants can reach different heights, from low ground covers to towering trees. Their height and spread depend on the species, location, and care. These plants are perfect for creating layers and visual interest in the garden. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider the option to buy evergreen plants for lasting beauty.

Evergreen plants are a popular choice for gardens due to their year-round green foliage. The leaves of these plants come in various shapes, colours, and textures. Some have needle-like leaves, while others have broad, glossy ones. The colour can range from deep green to bluish hues, depending on the species. These plants retain their leaves throughout the winter, providing structure and interest when other plants may lose their foliage. Factors like species and climate influence leaf retention, making them ideal for creating a consistent garden look.

Winter-hardiness is a key feature of evergreen plants. They can withstand cold temperatures, but their resilience depends on factors like the duration of frost, wind exposure, and soil conditions. Choosing the right species for the local climate ensures they thrive even in harsh winters. Evergreen plants are often selected for their ability to remain green and vibrant, even when temperatures drop.

These plants are also known for their heat and drought tolerance. Originating from various climates, many have developed features like waxy coatings or deep root systems to conserve moisture. This makes them suitable for gardens with varying water availability, ensuring they remain lush during dry spells.

Evergreen plants are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for wildlife. Their persistent foliage offers nesting sites and protection, supporting a balanced ecosystem. By choosing evergreen plants, gardens can become havens for local fauna, enhancing the natural environment.

Where to use evergreens for structure and colour

Evergreen plants are a fantastic choice for any garden, providing year-round green and structure. These non-deciduous garden plants keep their leaves throughout the seasons, offering winter greenery and a consistent backdrop. Here are some ways to use evergreen plants in the garden:

Companion ideas for evergreen and seasonal mixes

Evergreen plants are a great choice for any garden, providing year-round green plants that keep the garden lively even in winter. These winter-hardy green plants can be beautifully combined with various other plant types to create stunning displays. For instance, pairing evergreen plants with colourful perennials like Echinacea or Rudbeckia can add vibrant hues to the garden. Additionally, mixing them with ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus or Pennisetum creates a dynamic texture contrast. Another excellent combination is using evergreen plants alongside deciduous shrubs like Cornus, which offer striking winter stems. This mix ensures the garden remains interesting throughout the year. The best evergreen plants for structure, such as Boxwood or Holly, provide a solid backdrop for seasonal flowers, enhancing their beauty. These combinations work well because evergreen plants offer a stable, green foundation that highlights the changing colours and forms of other plants. Their easy-care nature makes them ideal for gardeners seeking low-maintenance options. By choosing plants with persistent foliage, the garden remains lush and inviting, even in the colder months. This approach ensures a garden that doesn’t go bare, offering lasting foliage and interest all year round.

Site and soil for year-round green success

Evergreen plants, also known as year-round green outdoor plants or non-deciduous garden plants, thrive in various light conditions. They prefer full sun to partial shade, depending on the species. Factors like location and surrounding structures can affect light availability. Evergreen plants are generally wind-resistant, but in exposed areas, windbreaks like hedges can help protect them. The ideal soil for evergreen plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy loam or loamy soil types are best. Regular fertilisation supports growth, ensuring the soil remains nutrient-rich. Evergreen plants need consistent soil moisture. Wind, sun, and soil type influence moisture levels. Mulching helps retain moisture and regulate temperature. Evergreen plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting pH can be beneficial. These plants, with their persistent foliage, provide winter greenery and are perfect for creating a garden that doesn’t go bare. By choosing the right site and soil, evergreen garden plants can flourish, offering lasting foliage and year-round beauty.
