Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Mature height (cm)

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application

Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

What are ferns for deep shade and low light?

Shade ferns are plants that thrive in areas with little sunlight. These ferns are perfect for gardens with lots of trees or buildings that block the sun. They are also known as dark area ferns or moist shaded garden ferns. Shade ferns are used to add greenery to parts of the garden that do not get much light. They are ideal for creating a lush look in shaded gardens and can be planted under trees or in shady borders. Popular types include Asplenium, Dryopteris, and Polystichum. These ferns are not only beautiful but also practical, as they require less sunlight to grow. Evergreen ferns for dark corners and shade-loving woodland ferns are great choices for low-light areas. Ferns for shade can transform any dark garden into a vibrant space with their elegant appearance. They are also perfect for landscaping, providing a classic touch to shady spots. Whether you are looking for deep shade ferns or low-light ferns for landscaping, these plants offer a versatile solution for any garden.

    Characteristics of low-light woodland foliage

Shade ferns are perfect for shaded gardens, thriving in areas with limited sunlight. These ferns for shade have a unique growth pattern, often spreading wide to cover ground efficiently. They can form dense clusters, making them ideal for filling dark corners and under trees. The development of shade ferns begins in early spring when new fronds unfurl. As they mature, these ferns for shade can reach their full size by mid-summer. The growth rate depends on factors like soil quality and moisture levels. Shade ferns typically bloom in the cooler months, with their peak in late spring to early summer. The climate and temperature play a significant role in their blooming cycle. Well-drained soil and regular watering enhance their growth and flowering. The colour of shade ferns varies, with most displaying rich green hues. The specific shade can be influenced by the type of fern, soil conditions, and light exposure. Some varieties may even show hints of bronze or silver, adding interest to shaded gardens. While shade ferns are not known for a strong scent, their presence can enhance the biodiversity of a garden. The foliage can emit a subtle earthy aroma, especially after rain, contributing to the garden's overall sensory experience. Mature shade ferns can reach heights of 30 to 90 cm, depending on the species and care provided. They add layers to garden landscapes, offering a lush backdrop for other plants. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care ensures these elegant shade ferns thrive.

Shade ferns are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These ferns have unique leaves that vary in shape, colour, and texture. The leaves can be delicate or robust, with shades of green that range from light to dark. Some shade ferns have a glossy finish, while others are more matte. These ferns typically retain their leaves throughout the year, making them evergreen. However, in colder climates, some may lose their leaves during winter. The choice of fern species and the garden's microclimate play a role in this. Shade ferns are generally hardy, but their frost sensitivity depends on factors like temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure. They thrive in well-drained soil and sheltered spots. In terms of heat and drought resistance, shade ferns prefer moist conditions. Their origins in shaded, damp environments mean they have adapted to retain moisture, often with a waxy leaf coating or fine hairs. Deep root systems also help them access water in dry periods. Regarding safety, shade ferns are non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute to biodiversity by providing habitats and food for various insects and small animals. Their presence in a garden can mimic natural woodland habitats, supporting a balanced ecosystem. Shade ferns are an excellent choice for enhancing garden biodiversity, offering shelter and nesting sites for wildlife. They are a classic addition to shady borders and under trees, bringing elegance to any garden space.

    • Use them as windbreaks to protect more delicate plants from strong winds.
    • Plant them as privacy screens to block unwanted views.
    • Create an insect-friendly corner by combining shade ferns with other biodiversity plants.
    • Enhance a shaded garden with these ferns for a natural woodland feel.

Companions for dark, moist, protected spaces

Shade ferns are perfect for adding texture and greenery to shaded gardens. These ferns can be combined with other plant types to create a lush and vibrant garden. Pairing shade ferns with hostas can create a beautiful contrast, as the broad leaves of hostas complement the delicate fronds of the ferns. Another great combination is with astilbes, which add a splash of colour with their feathery flowers. For a more diverse look, consider adding heucheras, known for their colourful foliage, which can brighten up any dark area. These combinations work well because shade ferns thrive in moist, shaded environments, similar to their companions. Hostas and astilbes also prefer these conditions, making them ideal partners. The mix of textures and colours from these plants creates an appealing and harmonious garden design. Shade-loving ferns for dark gardens, such as evergreen ferns for dark corners, provide year-round interest, while low-light ferns for landscaping add depth and structure. Ferns under trees or in shaded gardens can transform these spaces into elegant retreats. Classic ferns for shady borders and fern plants for shady spots are excellent choices for creating a serene and inviting atmosphere.

Soil, water and light for deep shade health

Shade ferns thrive in low-light conditions, making them perfect for shaded gardens. These ferns for shade prefer indirect sunlight or dappled light, as direct sun can scorch their delicate fronds. When planting shade-loving ferns, consider the wind exposure. They are not particularly wind-sensitive, but providing a sheltered spot can help maintain their lush appearance. The ideal soil for shade ferns is rich and well-draining. A mix of organic matter like compost can enhance soil quality, ensuring nutrients are available. Regular fertilisation supports growth, especially in shaded gardens. Moisture is crucial for ferns under trees, as they prefer consistently damp soil. However, avoid waterlogged conditions by ensuring good drainage. Shade ferns thrive in slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Testing soil pH can help adjust conditions for optimal growth. These elegant shade ferns are perfect for dark corners and shady borders, adding a touch of greenery to any garden. Whether in deep shade or under trees, these classic ferns for shady spots bring life to less sunny areas.

When and how to plant in full shade

Shade ferns are perfect for shaded gardens and can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For ferns with roots or clumps, it's best to plant in spring or autumn. Consider the type of fern, its size at planting, and growth speed. The number of ferns per metre depends on these factors and is usually listed on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is key for shade ferns. Ensure the soil is well-drained and rich in organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the fern, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil moist, especially in the first few weeks. Shade ferns thrive in moist shaded garden areas and are ideal for deep shade ferns, evergreen ferns for dark corners, and classic ferns for shady borders. They are also great as fern plants for shady spots and elegant shade ferns under trees.

    Care for Shade Loving Ferns

Shade ferns thrive in low-light conditions, making them perfect for shaded gardens. These elegant shade ferns require specific care to flourish.

    • Watering: Shade ferns need consistent moisture. Water them in the morning, ensuring the soil is damp but not waterlogged. Check the soil regularly to determine if more water is needed.
    • Pruning: Prune shade ferns in early spring to remove dead fronds. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damaging the plant. Pruning encourages new growth and maintains a tidy appearance.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer. Use a slow-release formula to provide nutrients over time. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can harm the plant.
    • Dividing: Divide shade ferns every 3-5 years in early spring. This helps rejuvenate the plant and encourages healthy growth. Gently separate the root ball and replant in suitable locations.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, protect shade ferns with a layer of mulch. This insulates the roots and prevents frost damage.
    • Transplanting: Transplant shade ferns in early spring. Water thoroughly after moving to reduce transplant shock. Ensure the new location has similar light and soil conditions.
For those looking to buy shade ferns, consider their placement in shaded gardens or under trees. These classic ferns for shady borders add a touch of elegance to any garden.
