Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

What are evergreen ground cover plants?

Evergreen ground cover plants are a type of plant that stays green throughout the year. These plants are perfect for covering the soil in gardens, providing a lush look even in winter. They are known for their ability to spread across the ground, creating a carpet-like effect. Some popular types include Vinca, Pachysandra, and Hedera. These plants are often chosen for their low-maintenance nature and ability to thrive in various conditions. Evergreen ground covers are also called non-deciduous ground covers or evergreen creeping plants. These terms highlight their ability to retain leaves all year round, unlike deciduous plants that lose their leaves in autumn. This makes them ideal for gardeners looking for year-round green spreaders. In gardens, evergreen ground cover plants are used to prevent soil erosion, suppress weeds, and add visual interest. They are especially useful in areas where grass struggles to grow. With options like Ajuga and Bergenia, these plants offer a variety of textures and colours. Choosing the best evergreen ground covers for gardens can enhance the landscape, providing a beautiful and lasting foliage display.

Key features of year-round green spreading plants

Evergreen ground covers are perfect for creating a lush, green carpet in gardens. These plants spread across the ground, forming a dense mat that can cover large areas. They grow low to the ground, usually reaching a height of 10 to 30 cm, and spread outwards, making them ideal for covering bare soil. The development of evergreen ground covers starts in early spring. They begin to sprout and quickly spread, reaching their full size by summer. These plants are known for their ability to maintain their foliage throughout the year, providing consistent greenery even in winter. Evergreen ground covers bloom in different months depending on the species. Some may flower in spring, while others bloom in summer. Factors like climate, temperature, and soil quality can affect the blooming period. Proper care and maintenance also play a role in ensuring healthy blooms. The flowers of evergreen ground covers can vary in colour, ranging from white to pink or purple. The specific colour depends on the plant species and cultivar. Soil conditions, light exposure, and climate can influence the vibrancy of the blooms. While not all evergreen ground covers are known for their scent, some species do have fragrant flowers or leaves. The intensity of the fragrance can depend on the plant's age and environmental conditions. Mature evergreen ground covers typically reach a height of 10 to 30 cm. They are excellent for creating layers in the garden and can be combined with taller plants for a varied landscape. Choosing the right location and providing proper care will help these plants thrive.

Evergreen ground covers are a popular choice for gardens due to their ability to maintain vibrant foliage throughout the year. The leaves of these plants come in various shapes, from oval to lanceolate, and exhibit a range of green hues. The texture can be smooth or slightly hairy, which helps in retaining moisture. Factors like sunlight, soil type, and climate influence the leaf characteristics. Most evergreen ground covers do not lose their leaves in winter, providing consistent greenery. The winter hardiness of evergreen ground covers depends on several factors. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost and strong winds can be challenging. Choosing the right species for the local climate and ensuring well-drained soil can enhance their frost resistance. These plants are typically non-deciduous, meaning they retain their leaves year-round. The choice of species and the garden's microclimate play a role in their evergreen nature. In milder climates, they thrive better, maintaining their lush appearance. Evergreen ground covers are also known for their heat and drought tolerance. Originating from various regions, they have adapted to withstand dry conditions. Features like a waxy leaf coating or deep root systems help them conserve water, making them suitable for low-maintenance gardens. Regarding safety, evergreen ground covers are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal gardening practices ensure they pose no harm. These plants contribute significantly to biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for insects and small animals, supporting the garden's ecosystem. By mimicking natural habitats, they help maintain ecological balance and increase garden resilience against pests.

Uses for evergreen ground covers in borders and slopes

Evergreen ground covers are perfect for adding year-round beauty to any garden. These plants, also known as year-round green carpet plants or winter-hardy ground cover, are ideal for various applications. Here are some ways to use evergreen ground covers in the garden:

    • Border: Evergreen ground covers can create a neat and attractive border, providing a lush green edge to garden beds.
    • Slopes: These plants are excellent for stabilising slopes, preventing soil erosion while maintaining a green appearance throughout the year.
    • Underplanting: Use them as underplanting for taller shrubs or trees, offering a consistent green backdrop.
    • Talud: Perfect for covering taluds, they ensure a uniform look and help with soil retention.
    • Bodembedekker: As a bodembedekker, they cover bare soil, reducing weed growth and retaining moisture.
    • Insectenhoek: Create an insect-friendly zone by planting them in an insectenhoek, supporting biodiversity.

For those looking to buy evergreen ground covers, these plants offer low-maintenance solutions with lasting foliage. They are the best evergreen ground covers for gardens, providing a year-round green spread. Consider adding these leaf-retaining groundcovers to enhance the garden's beauty and functionality.

    Good combinations with seasonal flowers

Evergreen ground covers are a great choice for any garden. They can be combined with various plant types to create a beautiful landscape. These non-deciduous ground covers work well with seasonal flowers like tulips and daffodils. The contrast between the vibrant blooms and the year-round green spreaders is stunning. For a unique combination, try pairing evergreen creeping plants with ornamental grasses. The grasses add texture, while the evergreen groundcovers provide a lush backdrop. Another option is to mix them with ferns. The delicate fronds of ferns complement the dense foliage of evergreen ground cover plants. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also practical. Evergreen groundcovers require low maintenance, making them ideal for busy gardeners. They retain their leaves throughout the year, ensuring the garden remains attractive even in winter. This lasting foliage provides a consistent green base, enhancing the beauty of seasonal flowers and other plants. Choosing the best evergreen ground covers for gardens can transform any space into a vibrant and inviting area. With their ability to spread and cover ground efficiently, they are perfect for creating a cohesive look in any garden setting.

Ideal growing spots and soil for evergreen varieties

Evergreen ground covers thrive in various light conditions, from full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth, with more sun promoting denser foliage. However, too much shade can lead to sparse growth. These plants are generally wind-resistant, but in exposed areas, a windbreak like a fence or hedge can help protect them. The ideal soil for evergreen ground covers is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging, which can harm the roots. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth, ensuring the plants remain vibrant throughout the year. Soil moisture is crucial for these plants. They prefer consistently moist soil, but not overly wet. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Evergreen ground covers prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can enhance growth. These plants are perfect for creating a year-round green carpet, providing lasting foliage and a winter-hardy ground cover in any garden.

    Planting guide for evergreen creepers

Evergreen ground covers can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting success. The distance between evergreen ground covers depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Check the Heijnen product page for specific plant spacing details. Proper soil preparation is crucial for evergreen ground covers. Loosen the soil and mix in organic matter to improve drainage and nutrients. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry periods to help establish roots. Evergreen ground covers, also known as non-deciduous ground covers or evergreen creeping plants, provide year-round green spreaders and lasting foliage in gardens. These leaf-retaining groundcovers are perfect for creating a wintergreen ground cover species effect.

Care for Evergreen Ground Cover Plants to Maintain Colour and Shape Year-Round

Evergreen ground covers are perfect for keeping gardens vibrant all year. Proper care ensures they thrive and maintain their lush appearance. Here are some tips for caring for these plants:

    • Watering: Evergreen ground covers need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Water deeply to encourage strong roots.
    • Pruning: Prune evergreen ground covers in early spring to remove dead or damaged foliage. This helps maintain their shape and encourages new growth. Use sharp pruning shears for clean cuts.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Follow the package instructions for the correct amount. Fertilise once a year for best results.
    • Dividing: Some evergreen ground covers benefit from dividing every few years. Do this in early spring to rejuvenate the plants and prevent overcrowding.
    • Winter Protection: Most evergreen ground covers are winter-hardy, but a layer of mulch can protect roots from extreme cold.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water well after moving to help the plant settle in its new location.

For those looking to enhance their garden, consider the option to buy evergreen ground covers for a lasting green carpet effect.
