Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

    Ground Cover with Pink Flowers

Pink flowering ground covers are plants that spread across the soil, creating a beautiful pink carpet in gardens. These plants are perfect for adding a touch of romance and colour to any outdoor space. Known for their ability to cover large areas, they are often used in gardens with pink colour accents. These plants are also referred to as rose-coloured creeping plants or pink-hued spreaders. They come in various shades, including soft pink, pale pink, and even bright pink. Some popular genera include Phlox, Dianthus, and Aubrieta, which are known for their vibrant blooms. In the garden, pink flowering ground covers are used to create romantic spreaders and pastel garden covers. They are ideal for pink-flowering borders and can be a great addition to gardens with pink colour accents. These plants are especially popular in cottage gardens, where they provide a long-blooming display. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding flowering ground covers to create a stunning pink landscape.

    Characteristics of rose-coloured creeping plants

Pink flowering ground covers are a delightful addition to any garden. These plants spread across the ground, creating a soft pink carpet that adds a romantic touch. They grow low to the ground, often reaching a width of up to 1 metre, depending on the variety. The growth habit is typically dense, making them ideal for filling gaps in borders or creating pastel garden covers. The development of pink flowering ground covers begins in early spring. As temperatures rise, these plants start to sprout, gradually covering the soil with their lush foliage. By late spring to early summer, they reach their full size, providing a beautiful display of pink flowers. The blooming period can extend into late summer, especially in mild climates. The blooming months for these plants vary, but they generally flower from May to August. Factors such as climate, soil quality, and care influence their flowering. In cooler climates, they may bloom later, while warmer areas see earlier blooms. Proper soil preparation and regular watering enhance their performance. The flowers of pink flowering ground covers come in various shades, including soft pink, pale pink, and even deep pink. The specific colour can depend on the cultivar and growing conditions. Adequate sunlight and well-drained soil contribute to vibrant blooms. While not all pink flowering ground covers are known for their scent, some varieties offer a subtle fragrance. This can add an extra layer of enjoyment to gardens with pink colour accents. The intensity of the scent may vary based on the plant's age and health. Mature pink flowering ground covers typically reach a height of 10 to 30 centimetres. This low height makes them perfect for coral-coloured borders and gardens. Choosing the right location and providing proper care ensures they thrive, creating a stunning display in any garden setting.

Pink flowering ground covers are a delightful addition to any garden. These rose-coloured creeping plants offer a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be oval, heart-shaped, or even feathery, with shades ranging from deep green to soft pink. The texture may vary from smooth to slightly hairy, which can affect how they retain moisture. In winter, some pink-hued spreaders may lose their leaves, depending on the species and climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is crucial for pink flowering ground covers. They can withstand frost, but factors like temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure play a role. Choosing the right type for the local climate and ensuring proper soil conditions can enhance their resilience.

These plants can be evergreen or deciduous. Some pink ground cover plants retain their leaves year-round, while others shed them annually. This depends on the species, climate, and location within the garden.

Heat and drought tolerance are important for pink flowering ground covers. Originating from various climates, they may have adaptations like a waxy leaf coating or deep root systems to conserve water. Ensuring adequate soil moisture and protection from strong winds can help them thrive.

Regarding toxicity, pink flowering ground covers are generally safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no danger, but it's always wise to supervise young children and pets around any plants.

These plants contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. Their long-blooming nature and ability to mimic natural habitats support a balanced ecosystem, enhancing garden resilience against pests.

Where and how to use pink ground-level accents

Pink flowering ground covers are a beautiful addition to any garden. These plants, also known as soft pink ground covers or pastel pink carpet plants, can transform a space with their romantic spread. Here are some ways to use pink flowering ground covers in the garden:

    • Use them in borders to create a romantic and soft pink-flowering garden.
    • Plant them in groups for a pastel garden cover effect, perfect for cottage gardens.
    • They work well as a ground cover with pink flowers, adding a touch of elegance to any area.
    • Consider them for underplanting to provide a long-blooming pink flowering plant display.
    • Use them as a pink flower ground cover to break up sightlines and add privacy.
    • They can also be used in coral-coloured borders and gardens for a vibrant look.

For those looking to buy pink flowering ground covers, these plants offer a variety of shades, from pale pink to deep pink, and even peony pink. They are ideal for creating gardens with pink colour accents, adding a touch of romance and beauty to any outdoor space.

Matching pink ground cover with other hues

Pink flowering ground covers can create a stunning effect in any garden. These rose-coloured creeping plants work well with a variety of other plant types. For a harmonious look, combine pink-hued spreaders with white or purple flowering plants. This creates a romantic spreader effect, perfect for pastel garden covers. Consider pairing pink ground covers for cottage gardens with silver foliage plants like lamb's ear or dusty miller. These combinations highlight the soft pink and pale pink tones beautifully.

Another option is to mix pink flower ground cover with yellow or orange blooms. This contrast can make the pink-flowering borders pop, adding vibrancy to gardens with pink colour accents. Long-blooming pink flowering plants like creeping thyme or pink phlox can be paired with coral-coloured borders and gardens for a cohesive look. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also attract pollinators, enhancing the garden's ecosystem.

Using pink ground cover plants in this way can transform a garden into a lively and inviting space. Whether opting for deep pink, salmon pink, or bright pink, these plants offer versatility and charm, making them a favourite choice for gardeners looking to add a touch of romance and colour to their outdoor spaces.

Best soils and sun conditions for pink spreaders

Pink flowering ground covers thrive in full sun to partial shade. These plants need at least six hours of sunlight daily to produce vibrant blooms. However, in hotter climates, some afternoon shade can prevent wilting. Wind can affect these delicate plants, so planting them near a fence or hedge can offer protection. The ideal soil for pink flowering ground covers is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth, ensuring a lush display of soft pink, pastel pink, and other shades like salmon pink and coral. Soil moisture is crucial for these plants. They prefer consistently moist soil, but not soggy. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. The pH preference for pink flowering ground covers is slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0 to 7.0. This range supports nutrient uptake, promoting healthy blooms. Adjusting soil pH with lime or sulphur can optimise conditions for these romantic spreaders, enhancing gardens with pink colour accents and creating beautiful pink-flowering borders.

When and how to plant pink flowering carpets

Pink flowering ground covers are a beautiful addition to any garden. These rose-coloured creeping plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant distance, it's important to think about the type of pink-hued spreaders, their size at planting, and growth speed. The number of plants per metre is usually listed on the product page. Proper soil preparation is key for these romantic spreaders. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost for healthy growth. For planting instructions, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks, to help establish the plants. With the right care, these pastel garden covers will thrive, adding soft pink, pale pink, and even bright pink accents to gardens with pink colour accents.

Ongoing care for healthy pink flower ground cover

Pink flowering ground covers are a beautiful addition to any garden. These plants require specific care to thrive. Regular maintenance ensures vibrant blooms and healthy growth.

    • Watering: Pink flowering ground covers need consistent moisture. Water early in the morning to prevent evaporation. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, it's time to water.
    • Pruning: Prune in early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to remove dead or damaged stems. Pruning helps maintain shape and promotes more blooms.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. This supports healthy growth and vibrant flowers. Follow package instructions for the correct amount.
    • Dividing: Divide plants every 3-4 years to prevent overcrowding. Do this in early spring or autumn. Dividing helps rejuvenate the plants and encourages more blooms.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, add a layer of mulch to protect roots from frost. This helps retain soil moisture and provides insulation.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water thoroughly after moving to reduce transplant shock.
For those looking to enhance their pink-flowering gardens, consider adding soft pink ground covers or pastel pink carpet plants. These options create stunning pink-flowering borders and gardens with pink colour accents. To explore more options, consider the variety available to buy pink flowering ground covers.
