Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

What makes a purple flower ground cover?

Purple flowering ground covers are low-growing plants that spread across the soil, creating a vibrant carpet of colour. These plants are perfect for adding a splash of purple to any garden. Known for their ability to cover large areas, they are often used in gardens with purple colour accents. Some popular types include Ajuga, Lamium, and Aubrieta, which are known for their beautiful blooms and easy maintenance.

These plants are also referred to as deep purple ground covers or rich purple creepers. They are ideal for creating long-flowering purple ground cover, providing a stunning display throughout the growing season. Violet spreaders and purple garden plants are other terms used to describe these versatile plants.

Purple flowering ground covers are used in gardens to create a cohesive look, often in purple-flowering borders or gardens with purple colour accents. They are also beneficial in wildlife gardens, as they provide shelter and food for various creatures. Whether you are looking for a purple ground cover for wildlife gardens or simply want to add a touch of colour, these plants are an excellent choice. Consider incorporating flowering ground covers into your garden for a beautiful and functional landscape.

Key features of deep purple spreading plants

Purple flowering ground covers are a popular choice for adding colour to gardens. These plants grow low to the ground, spreading out to create a vibrant carpet of colour. They can cover large areas, making them ideal for filling spaces between taller plants. The growth habit of these violet ground cover plants is typically dense, ensuring minimal gaps in coverage. The development of purple flowering ground covers begins in early spring. As temperatures rise, these plants start to sprout, reaching maturity by late spring or early summer. The growth rate can vary depending on the specific type and environmental conditions. The blooming period for these plants usually occurs from late spring to early autumn. Factors such as climate, weather conditions, and soil quality can influence the timing and duration of flowering. In cooler climates, the bloom may start later, while warmer areas might see earlier blooms. The flowers of these lavender-hued carpet plants come in various shades, including light purple, deep purple, and violet. The specific colour can depend on the plant variety, soil pH, and sunlight exposure. Proper care and maintenance can enhance the vibrancy of the blooms. While not all purple flowering ground covers are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a pleasant fragrance. This can be influenced by the plant's age, health, and environmental factors. The scent can add an extra dimension to gardens with purple colour accents. Mature purple flowering ground covers typically reach a height of 10 to 30 cm. This low height makes them perfect for creating mauve-coloured borders and gardens. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care will ensure these plants thrive and enhance the garden's beauty.

Purple flowering ground covers are a beautiful addition to any garden. These plants have leaves that vary in shape, colour, and texture. The leaves can be oval, heart-shaped, or even lobed, with shades ranging from deep green to a lighter, more silvery hue. The texture can be smooth or slightly hairy, which helps the plant retain moisture. In winter, some purple flowering ground covers may lose their leaves, depending on the species and climate conditions. The winter hardiness of purple flowering ground covers depends on several factors. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost can be damaging. The choice of species, wind exposure, and soil conditions all play a role in their survival during winter months. Some purple flowering ground covers are evergreen, keeping their leaves year-round, while others shed their leaves annually. This depends on the species and the climate where they are planted. These plants are generally heat and drought-tolerant, thanks to their origin and leaf structure. A waxy coating or fine hairs on the leaves can help reduce water loss. A deep root system allows them to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making them resilient in dry conditions. Purple flowering ground covers are safe for gardens with children and pets. They are non-toxic and pose no danger when used in a typical garden setting. These plants support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. Their long flowering period and insect-friendly nature make them ideal for wildlife gardens. They help maintain ecosystem balance and increase garden resilience against pests.

How to use purple blooms for ground contrast

Purple flowering ground covers are a fantastic choice for adding vibrant colour to any garden. These violet ground cover plants not only provide a beautiful lavender-hued carpet but also enhance biodiversity. Here are some ways to use them effectively in your garden:

    • Border: Use purple flowering ground covers to create stunning purple-flowering borders that add depth and contrast.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a lush, long-flowering purple ground cover that spreads beautifully.
    • Underplanting: Ideal for underplanting larger purple garden plants, providing a lovely violet-coloured base.
    • Wildlife Gardens: Perfect as a purple ground cover for wildlife gardens, attracting beneficial insects.
    • Privacy Screen: Use as a low-growing privacy screen or sightline breaker with their dense foliage.
    • Shade Gardens: Suitable for adding light purple accents in shaded areas, creating a serene atmosphere.

Consider these options when planning gardens with purple colour accents. Whether choosing light purple, deep purple, or lilac shades, these plants offer a versatile solution. For those looking to buy purple flowering ground covers, they are an excellent addition to any garden seeking a touch of amethyst or mauve-coloured beauty.

Companion plants that match with rich purple tones

Purple flowering ground covers can create a stunning effect in any garden. These plants work well with a variety of other plant types and species. Combining them with silver-leaved plants like Artemisia or Lamb's Ear can highlight the deep purple tones. Grasses such as Festuca or Carex add texture and movement, complementing the rich purple creepers. For a more vibrant look, consider pairing them with yellow or orange flowers like Coreopsis or Marigolds, which create a striking contrast with the violet spreaders.

Some beautiful plant combinations include purple ground cover flowers with white flowering plants like Alyssum or Snow-in-Summer. This combination creates a classic and elegant look. Another option is to mix purple garden plants with pink blooms such as Dianthus or pink Geraniums, adding a soft and romantic touch to the garden. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also attract pollinators, making them ideal for wildlife gardens.

The reason these combinations work so well is the balance of colours and textures. The light purple and deep purple shades provide a rich backdrop, while the contrasting colours add interest and depth. This creates a harmonious and inviting space, perfect for gardens with purple colour accents. Whether aiming for long-flowering purple ground cover or a purple ground cover for wildlife gardens, these combinations offer endless possibilities.

Soil and sun exposure for purple flowers

Purple flowering ground covers thrive in various light conditions. They prefer full sun to partial shade, which helps them bloom beautifully. Factors like the garden's location and surrounding structures can affect light availability. These plants are generally not wind-sensitive, but if planted in open areas, a windbreak can help protect them. The ideal soil for purple flowering ground covers is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality and support growth. Regular fertilisation ensures healthy blooms. Soil moisture is crucial; these plants need consistent watering, especially in sunny or windy spots. Purple flowering ground covers prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Testing the soil can help maintain the right balance. Adjusting pH with lime or sulphur can optimise conditions for these violet ground cover plants. Incorporating these plants into purple-flowering gardens or borders adds vibrant colour accents. Whether light purple, deep purple, or lavender-hued, they create stunning visual effects in gardens with purple colour accents.

How and when to plant purple ground creepers

Purple flowering ground covers can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls or bare roots, it's best to plant in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The plant spacing for purple flowering ground covers depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre or square metre is listed on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Before planting, loosen the soil to allow roots to spread easily. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. After planting, water thoroughly to help the plant settle. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks, to establish strong roots. These purple ground cover flowers will add vibrant colour to any garden, creating stunning purple-flowering borders and gardens with purple colour accents.

    Maintaining Purple Ground Cover Flowers

Purple flowering ground covers are a beautiful addition to any garden. These violet ground cover plants require specific care to thrive. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Aim to water in the early morning or late afternoon to prevent evaporation. Pruning is important for maintaining healthy purple ground cover flowers. Trim back in early spring to encourage new growth and remove any dead or damaged parts. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damaging the plants. Fertilising helps keep these lavender-hued carpet plants vibrant. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and again in mid-summer. Follow the package instructions for the correct amount. Dividing these plants every few years can prevent overcrowding. The best time to divide is in early spring or autumn. Gently dig up the plant, separate the roots, and replant in a new location. Winter protection is crucial for gardens with purple colour accents. Apply a layer of mulch to insulate the roots from cold temperatures.

    • Water regularly, especially in dry periods.
    • Prune in early spring for healthy growth.
    • Fertilise in spring and mid-summer.
    • Divide every few years to prevent overcrowding.
    • Protect with mulch during winter.

The flowers often have a sweet fragrance, attracting bees and butterflies, making them ideal for wildlife gardens. The leaves of these plants can vary in texture, adding depth to garden borders. Some varieties provide a rich purple creeper effect, spreading beautifully across the ground. In autumn, the foliage may change colour, adding a new dimension to the garden's appearance.
