Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

White flowering ground covers are plants that spread across the ground, producing beautiful white blooms. These plants are perfect for adding a touch of elegance to any garden. They are often used in flowering ground covers to create a seamless carpet of white. Some popular types include Vinca, Iberis, Sagina, Cerastium, and Phlox. These plants are known for their ability to cover large areas, making them ideal for gardens with white colour accents. White flowering ground covers are also known as white-blooming creepers or pure white spreading plants. They are perfect for creating bright white spreaders in the garden. These plants are often chosen for their ability to thrive in various conditions, making them suitable for white-flowering gardens and white-flowering borders. In the garden, white flowering ground covers are used to create stunning visual effects. They are perfect for evening gardens, where their bright blooms can be appreciated in the soft light. These plants are also ideal for creating pure white borders and gardens, adding a touch of cream-coloured, snow white, or ivory-tinted beauty to any outdoor space.

Traits of pure white blooming carpet plants

White flowering ground covers are a beautiful addition to any garden. These snow-white ground plants spread across the soil, creating a pearl-white carpet effect. They grow low to the ground, often reaching a width of up to 1 metre, depending on the species. The growth is dense, making them ideal for covering large areas quickly. The development of white flowering ground covers begins in early spring. They start as small shoots and gradually spread out, reaching their full size by late spring. By summer, they are usually in full bloom, showcasing their bright white flowers. The blooming period can vary based on climate, weather conditions, and care. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil help them thrive. White flowering ground covers typically bloom from late spring to early summer. The exact months can depend on the local climate and the specific variety. Consistent care, such as regular watering and occasional fertilising, can enhance their blooming period. The flowers of these ground covers are often a soft white, but can also be cream-coloured or ivory-tinted. Factors like soil type, light exposure, and plant age can influence the exact shade. They are perfect for white-flowering gardens and borders, adding a touch of elegance. While not all white flowering ground covers are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a mild fragrance. This can add an extra layer of sensory appeal to gardens with white colour accents. Mature white flowering ground covers can reach a height of 10 to 30 cm. This low height makes them suitable for creating pure white borders and gardens. They are versatile and can be combined with other plants to create a layered effect.

White flowering ground covers are a popular choice for adding elegance to gardens. These plants have leaves that vary in shape, colour, and texture. The leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or even heart-shaped, often in shades of green. Some have a glossy finish, while others are more matte. In winter, many white flowering ground covers retain their leaves, providing year-round interest, though some may lose them depending on the species and climate conditions.

When it comes to winter hardiness, white flowering ground covers can vary. They generally withstand mild frost, but severe cold can be challenging. Factors like temperature, frost duration, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a role in their survival. Choosing the right species for the local climate is crucial.

Many white flowering ground covers are evergreen, keeping their foliage throughout the year. However, some may shed leaves annually, similar to most perennials. This depends on the plant type, climate, and location in the garden.

These plants are often heat and drought-tolerant, thanks to their origins and leaf structures. Some have a waxy coating or fine hairs that help retain moisture. A deep root system also aids in accessing water during dry spells. Soil moisture and wind conditions can affect their resilience.

White flowering ground covers are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. They are harmless when used in typical garden settings, ensuring a safe environment for all.

These plants contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. Their long blooming period and native-friendly traits support ecosystems, enhancing garden resistance to pests and diseases. White flowering ground covers are ideal for creating white-flowering gardens and borders, adding soft white, ivory-tinted, and snow white accents to any garden.

Where to use white ground covers for light and clarity

White flowering ground covers are a beautiful addition to any garden. These snow-white ground plants can be used in various ways to enhance the garden's appearance. Here are some ideas on how to use these pearl-white carpet plants effectively:

    • Border: Use white flowering ground covers to create pure white borders and gardens. They add a soft white touch that contrasts beautifully with other plants.
    • Group Planting: Plant them in groups for a bright white spreader effect, perfect for white-flowering gardens.
    • Underplanting: These ground cover white flowers work well as underplanting for taller plants, adding a cream-coloured layer of beauty.
    • Pot or Planter: Place them in pots or planters for a milky white accent on patios or balconies.
    • Shade Garden: Ideal for white-flowering borders in shaded areas, providing a soft white glow.
    • Insect Corner: Create an insect-friendly zone with these ivory-tinted plants, attracting beneficial insects.

Consider these best white ground cover plants for evening gardens to add elegance and charm. When planning a garden with white colour accents, buy white flowering ground covers to achieve a harmonious look.

Combining white creepers with bold or soft shades

White flowering ground covers can create stunning contrasts in the garden. These white-blooming creepers pair beautifully with both bold and soft shades. For a striking look, combine them with deep purple or blue perennials. This contrast highlights the bright white spreaders, making them stand out. Alternatively, pair them with soft pink or cream-coloured flowers for a more subtle effect. This combination creates a harmonious and calming atmosphere in white-flowering gardens.

Some beautiful plant combinations include white flowering ground covers with lavender and salvia. The soft white of the ground covers complements the vibrant colours of these plants. Another option is to mix them with hostas and ferns. The lush green foliage of these plants enhances the pure white spreading plants, adding depth to the garden.

These combinations are not only visually appealing but also practical. White flower ground cover plants help to fill gaps in borders, providing a continuous display of ground cover white flowers. They are ideal for white-flowering borders and gardens with white colour accents. Whether used in pure white borders and gardens or as part of a mixed planting scheme, these plants offer versatility and beauty.

Conditions for white blooms to thrive

White flowering ground covers, also known as snow-white ground plants or pearl-white carpet plants, need specific light conditions to flourish. These plants prefer full sun to partial shade, as too much shade can reduce their bright white spread. Wind can be a concern for white flowering ground covers. To protect them, consider planting them near a windbreak or using garden structures to shield them from strong gusts. The ideal soil for white flowering ground cover plants is well-draining and rich in nutrients. Regular fertilisation helps maintain their vibrant white blooms. Soil moisture is crucial; these plants thrive in moderately moist conditions. Too much sun or wind can dry the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. White flowering ground covers prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. This range supports their growth and enhances their white-flowered appearance. Adjusting the soil pH with amendments can help achieve the best conditions for these plants. In gardens with white colour accents, these plants create stunning pure white borders and gardens, adding a touch of elegance with their cream-coloured and ivory-tinted blooms.

Planting methods for pristine white ground plants

White flowering ground covers can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting success. The distance between white flowering ground covers depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is listed on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Loosen the soil and mix in compost to improve drainage and nutrients. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the ground. Fill the hole with soil and water thoroughly. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks. This helps the roots establish well. White-blooming creepers and pure white spreading plants add elegance to white-flowering gardens and borders. They create stunning white-flowered accents in gardens with white colour themes, from snow white to ivory-tinted shades.

Maintenance for White Ground Cover Plants

White flowering ground covers, also known as snow-white ground plants or pearl-white carpet plants, are a beautiful addition to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and maintain their stunning appearance.

    • Regular maintenance is key for a fresh and clean look. Trim back any overgrown areas to encourage new growth and maintain shape.
    • Pruning is best done in early spring. Use sharp shears to remove dead or damaged stems, promoting healthy growth and more blooms.
    • Fertilising should occur in early spring and late summer. Use a balanced fertiliser to support growth and flowering. Apply according to package instructions to avoid over-fertilisation.
    • Watering is crucial, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture regularly; water when the top inch feels dry. Ensure even watering to prevent root rot.
    • Dividing and replanting every 3-4 years helps rejuvenate plants and prevent overcrowding. Best done in early spring or autumn.
    • Winter protection may be necessary in colder climates. Apply a layer of mulch to insulate roots and protect from frost.
    • Transplanting is best in early spring. Water thoroughly after moving to help establish roots in the new location.

For those looking to buy white flowering ground covers, these plants add a touch of elegance to white-flowering gardens and pure white borders. They create a soft white, ivory-tinted backdrop, perfect for gardens with white colour accents.
