Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Features of golden and cheerful yellow blooms

Yellow flowering ground covers are a vibrant addition to any garden. These plants spread across the ground, creating a golden-yellow carpet that brightens up the space. They grow low to the ground, often reaching a height of just 10 to 30 cm, and can spread widely, covering large areas with their sun-bright ground cover. The development of yellow flowering ground covers begins in early spring. As temperatures rise, these plants start to sprout, quickly covering the ground with their lush foliage. By late spring or early summer, they reach their full growth, showcasing their bright yellow blooms. The blooming period for these plants varies, but they typically flower from late spring to early autumn. Factors like climate, weather conditions, and soil quality can influence their blooming time. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil help them thrive, while regular care ensures a long-lasting display. The blooms of yellow flowering ground covers come in various shades, from pale yellow to mustard-coloured. The specific hue depends on the plant variety, soil conditions, and sunlight exposure. More sunlight often results in brighter, sunnier yellow flowers. While not all yellow flowering ground covers are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a subtle fragrance. This can add an extra layer of enjoyment to gardens with yellow colour accents, enhancing the overall sensory experience. Mature yellow flowering ground covers maintain a low profile, making them ideal for yellow-flowering borders. Their height and spread can be influenced by factors like location and care, allowing them to fit seamlessly into any garden design.

Yellow flowering ground covers are a vibrant addition to any garden. These plants, often referred to as lemon-coloured ground plants or sunny yellow creepers, have unique leaf shapes and colours. The leaves can vary from pale yellow to mustard-coloured, adding a bright touch to yellow-flowering gardens. The structure of the leaves can be smooth or slightly hairy, which helps in retaining moisture. In winter, some yellow flowering ground cover plants may lose their leaves, depending on the species and climate conditions. The winter hardiness of these plants is influenced by temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure. Some bright yellow ground covers are more frost-resistant, thriving in gardens with yellow colour accents even during cold months. However, others might need protection from harsh winds and freezing temperatures. Many yellow flowering ground cover plants are evergreen, maintaining their foliage throughout the year. This characteristic depends on the plant type and its location. In milder climates, these plants are more likely to stay green, providing continuous colour in yellow-flowering borders. Heat and drought resistance are crucial for yellow ground cover plants for sun. Originating from warmer regions, these plants often have a waxy leaf coating or deep root systems to conserve water. They thrive in well-drained soil, making them ideal for gardens with yellow colour accents. Regarding safety, yellow flowering ground covers are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute to biodiversity by attracting pollinators and providing shelter for small creatures. Long-blooming yellow spreaders can enhance the ecosystem, supporting a balance in gardens with yellow-tinted borders and gardens.

Consider using them to create yellow-tinted borders and gardens that shine with pale yellow, lemon yellow, and light yellow hues.

Planting companions for bright ground cover

Yellow flowering ground covers can be beautifully combined with various plant types to create a vibrant garden. These lemon-coloured ground plants work well with purple perennials like Salvia or Catmint, providing a striking contrast. Sunny yellow creepers also pair nicely with ornamental grasses, adding texture and movement to the garden. For a more subtle look, consider combining them with pale yellow or white flowering plants, such as daisies or white alyssum, to create a harmonious yellow-flowering garden. Examples of beautiful plant combinations include pairing bright yellow ground covers with blue flowering plants like Veronica or Campanula. This creates a stunning visual effect in yellow-flowering borders. Another option is to mix yellow ground cover plants for sun with red or orange flowers, such as Coreopsis or Gaillardia, for a warm, inviting garden with yellow colour accents. These combinations are effective because they highlight the sunny yellow tones of the ground cover with yellow flowers, creating a cohesive and eye-catching display. The contrast between the yellow flowering ground cover and other colours adds depth and interest to the garden, making it a lively and engaging space.

Best soil, sun and drainage for yellow flower types

Yellow flowering ground covers thrive in full sun to partial shade. These golden-yellow carpet plants need at least six hours of sunlight daily for vibrant blooms. However, in very hot climates, some afternoon shade can prevent wilting. Wind can affect these sun-bright ground covers, so planting them near a windbreak or using garden screens can help. The ideal soil for yellow flowering ground cover plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth, enhancing the bright yellow ground covers' appearance. Soil moisture is crucial for these plants. They prefer consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. The pH preference for yellow flower ground cover is slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0 to 7.0. This range supports nutrient uptake, ensuring the ground cover with yellow flowers remains healthy. Adjusting soil pH with lime or sulphur can optimise conditions for yellow-flowering gardens. Incorporating these tips will create stunning yellow-flowering borders, adding vibrant yellow colour accents to any garden.

When and how to plant yellow ground covers

Yellow flowering ground covers can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with roots or clumps, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The plant spacing for yellow flowering ground covers depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Before planting, loosen the soil to allow roots to spread easily. When planting yellow flowering ground covers, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. After planting, water thoroughly to help the plant settle. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks, to establish strong roots. These lemon-coloured ground plants add a bright touch to any garden, creating beautiful yellow-flowering gardens and borders.

Caring for Yellow Flowering Ground Cover

Yellow flowering ground covers, also known as golden-yellow carpet plants or sun-bright ground cover, are a vibrant addition to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and brighten up yellow-flowering gardens and borders.

    • Watering: These plants need regular watering, especially in dry periods. Check the soil moisture; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Early morning is the best time to water to prevent evaporation.
    • Pruning: Prune in early spring to encourage new growth and maintain shape. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damage. Pruning helps keep the plants healthy and promotes more blooms.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring. This supports growth and enhances the yellow colour. Fertilise once a month during the growing season for best results.
    • Dividing: Divide every 2-3 years in early spring to prevent overcrowding. This keeps the plants healthy and encourages more blooms.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, add a layer of mulch to protect roots from frost. This helps maintain soil temperature and moisture.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring. Water well after transplanting and ensure the soil is well-drained.
