Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Explore the variety of ground cover plants that suit semi shadow ground cover needs. These groundcovers for partial shade are perfect for creating a vibrant garden with moderate light needs.

What are semi shadow ground cover plants?

Partial shade ground covers are plants that thrive in areas with limited sunlight. These plants are perfect for gardens that receive dappled light or are shaded by trees. They help to cover the soil, preventing weeds and retaining moisture. Some popular types include Heuchera, Lamium, and Pachysandra. These plants are also known as part-shade creeping plants, which spread across the ground, creating a lush carpet. Partial shade ground covers are used in gardens to fill spaces where other plants might struggle. They are ideal for east-facing gardens or areas with filtered sunlight. These plants can handle morning sun and are great for shared-light covers. They are often chosen as the best ground covers for partial shade gardens due to their ability to thrive in moderate light conditions. Flowering ground covers for dappled light, like Geranium and Waldsteinia, add colour and texture to the garden. Groundcovers for partial shade are essential for creating a balanced and beautiful garden environment.

Features of part-shade tolerant creeping plants

Partial shade ground covers are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants spread across the ground, creating a lush carpet. They grow in various forms, from low mats to slightly taller clumps, depending on the species. The spread can range from a few centimetres to over a metre, making them versatile for different garden sizes. The development of partial shade ground covers starts in early spring. They begin with small shoots that gradually expand. By summer, they reach their full size, providing excellent coverage. The growth rate depends on the plant type and care, such as watering and soil quality. These plants typically bloom in late spring to early summer. The flowering period can vary based on climate, temperature, and care. Cooler climates may see a delayed bloom, while warmer areas might experience earlier flowering. Proper soil preparation and regular maintenance enhance their blooming potential. The bloom colours of partial shade ground covers are diverse, ranging from whites and pinks to purples and blues. Factors like species, soil type, and light exposure influence the intensity and hue of the flowers. Regular care ensures vibrant blooms. Some partial shade ground covers are known for their pleasant scent. The fragrance can come from the flowers or leaves, adding an aromatic touch to the garden. The intensity of the scent varies with the plant type and environmental conditions. Mature partial shade ground covers can reach heights of 10 to 30 centimetres. The height depends on the species and growing conditions. They are ideal for layering in gardens, providing a beautiful understorey beneath taller plants. Choosing the right location and care ensures healthy growth and optimal coverage.

Partial shade ground covers are perfect for gardens with dappled light. These plants have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be oval, heart-shaped, or even lobed, with shades ranging from deep green to variegated patterns. The texture might be smooth or slightly hairy, helping them adapt to different light conditions. In winter, some ground cover plants for partial shade may lose their leaves, while others remain evergreen, depending on the species and climate. Winter hardiness is crucial for these plants. They can withstand mild frost, but severe cold, strong winds, and poor soil conditions can affect their survival. Choosing the right type for your garden's specific conditions is essential. Many partial shade ground covers are evergreen, providing year-round interest. However, some may shed leaves annually, influenced by species, climate, and location. In terms of heat and drought resistance, these plants often have adaptations like deep root systems or waxy leaves to conserve moisture. Origin and soil moisture also play a role in their resilience. Regarding safety, partial shade ground covers are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They enhance biodiversity by offering food and shelter to insects and small animals. These plants can mimic natural habitats, supporting ecosystem balance and increasing garden resistance to pests. They are ideal for east-facing gardens, under trees, or areas with filtered sunlight, making them versatile choices for any garden setting.

Ideal locations for partial shade spreaders

Partial shade ground covers are perfect for areas in the garden that receive limited sunlight. These plants thrive in spots where the sun is filtered through trees or where they receive morning sun. Here are some ways to use these versatile plants in the garden:

    • Use partial shade ground covers in borders to create a lush, green edge.
    • Plant them in groups for a carpet-like effect in semi-shaded areas.
    • They work well as underplanting beneath trees, where sunlight is dappled.
    • Consider them for east-facing gardens that get morning sun.
    • They can act as a natural windscreen or privacy barrier in shared-light areas.
    • Perfect for creating an insect-friendly zone, enhancing garden biodiversity.

When planning a garden, it's important to choose the best ground covers for partial shade gardens. These plants not only add beauty but also help with soil erosion and weed control. For those looking to buy partial shade ground covers, consider options that suit the specific light conditions of the garden. Whether it's flowering ground covers for dappled light or groundcovers for filtered sunlight, there's a variety to suit every need.

Good plant combinations for dappled light

Partial shade ground covers can be beautifully combined with various plant types to create a stunning garden. These ground cover plants for partial shade work well with ferns, hostas, and astilbes. Ferns add a lush, green texture, while hostas offer bold foliage. Astilbes bring a splash of colour with their feathery flowers. For a unique combination, try mixing part-shade creeping plants with hellebores and heucheras. Hellebores bloom early in the year, providing interest when other plants are still dormant. Heucheras, with their vibrant leaves, add a pop of colour throughout the season. These combinations are excellent because they thrive in similar conditions. Groundcovers for partial shade, like those mentioned, prefer dappled light and can handle the filtered sunlight found under trees or in east-facing gardens. They are also ideal for areas with moderate light needs, such as morning sun groundcovers. Using flowering ground covers for dappled light, like astilbes, adds visual interest and attracts pollinators. These semi shadow ground cover plants spread well, making them perfect light-shade spreaders for shared-light covers. This creates a cohesive and harmonious garden design.

Soil and moisture needs in part shade

Partial shade ground covers thrive in areas with dappled light or semi-shaded conditions. These plants prefer locations where they receive morning sun but are protected from harsh afternoon rays. Factors like nearby trees or buildings can influence the light levels, making them ideal for ground cover plants for partial shade. Wind sensitivity is a concern for some semi-shaded carpet plants. To protect them, consider planting near windbreaks or using garden structures to shield them from strong gusts. The ideal soil for dappled light ground covers is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Regular fertilisation helps promote healthy growth. A mix of loam and sand can provide the right balance for these plants. Moisture levels are crucial for groundcovers for partial shade. The soil should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Wind and sun exposure can affect moisture retention, so mulching can help maintain the right balance. Partial shade ground covers prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Soil testing can help determine the current pH and any necessary adjustments. Factors like rainfall and soil type can influence pH levels, so regular monitoring is beneficial.

When to plant partial shade ground covers

Partial shade ground covers can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For plants with roots or clumps, the best time to plant is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, climate, and garden location play a role in successful planting. The distance between partial shade ground covers depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Information about the number of plants per metre is usually available on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for these plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially during dry spells. Ground cover plants for partial shade thrive in dappled shade and are ideal for east-facing gardens or under trees. They are perfect for areas with moderate light needs and can spread well in shared-light conditions.

Maintenance Tips for Partial Shade Ground Covers

Partial shade ground covers are perfect for areas with limited sunlight. These plants thrive in semi-shaded spots, making them ideal for gardens with dappled light. Proper care ensures they flourish and cover the ground effectively.

    • Watering: Ground cover plants for partial shade need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Early morning is the best time to water, allowing the soil to absorb moisture before the sun gets too hot.
    • Pruning: Regular pruning helps maintain the shape and encourages new growth. Trim back any overgrown areas in early spring or late autumn. Use sharp, clean tools to avoid damaging the plants.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Use a slow-release formula to provide nutrients over time. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can harm the plants.
    • Dividing: Some semi-shaded carpet plants benefit from dividing every few years. This process rejuvenates the plants and prevents overcrowding. The best time to divide is in early spring or autumn.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, provide a layer of mulch to protect the roots from frost. This helps retain moisture and insulates the plants during winter.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant groundcovers in early spring. Ensure the new location has similar light conditions and water well after moving.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider the option to buy partial shade ground covers to add beauty and functionality to semi-shaded areas.
