Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Explore the diverse range of ground cover plant choices that can enhance any shaded area, offering a vibrant touch to your garden's hidden spots.

What are ground cover plants for shade?

Shade ground covers are plants that thrive in areas with little sunlight. These plants are perfect for gardens with lots of trees or buildings that block the sun. They spread across the ground, creating a lush carpet of greenery. Some popular types include Hedera, Asarum, and Pachysandra. These plants are known for their ability to grow in low-light conditions, making them ideal for shaded areas. Shade ground covers are also called dark area creeping plants. They are used to cover soil in places where other plants might struggle. These plants help prevent soil erosion and keep weeds at bay. They are also great for adding texture and colour to a garden, even in the darkest corners. In the garden, shade-loving spreaders like Epimedium and Luzula are often used under trees or in north-facing areas. They are some of the best ground covers for shady gardens, providing a beautiful and practical solution for low-light spaces. These low-light flowering ground covers can transform a dull area into a vibrant part of the garden.

Traits of plants that thrive in darker garden spots

Shade ground covers are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These low-light ground plants spread across the soil, creating a lush carpet. They grow horizontally, covering the ground efficiently. The spread can vary, with some shade-loving spreaders reaching up to a metre wide. The development of shade ground covers begins in early spring. They start as small shoots and gradually expand, reaching maturity by late summer. The best ground covers for shady gardens adapt well to low-light conditions, making them ideal for under trees or north-facing areas. Blooming months for these plants often occur in late spring to early summer. Factors like climate, temperature, and soil preparation play a role. Cooler climates may delay blooming, while well-cared-for plants in rich soil bloom more vibrantly. The bloom colours of shade ground covers range from whites and purples to soft pinks. The specific hue depends on the species and cultivar. Soil quality, light exposure, and plant age also influence the intensity of the colours. Some shade ground covers are known for their subtle fragrance. The scent can come from the leaves or flowers, adding an extra dimension to the garden. The intensity of the fragrance varies, often enhanced by warm weather. Mature shade ground covers typically reach a height of 10 to 30 centimetres. This low profile makes them ideal for layering in garden design, providing a lush base without obstructing sightlines. Choosing the right location and care ensures they thrive, offering a beautiful and functional addition to any shaded area.

Shade ground covers are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be round, heart-shaped, or even fern-like, often in shades of green, silver, or variegated patterns. The texture can be smooth or slightly hairy, helping them adapt to low-light conditions. Some shade ground covers lose their leaves in winter, while others remain evergreen, depending on the species and climate.

Winter hardiness is crucial for shade ground covers. They can withstand cold temperatures, but factors like wind exposure and soil conditions play a role. Choosing the right species for the local climate ensures they survive frost periods. Evergreen varieties are often more resilient, providing year-round coverage.

These plants are generally heat and drought-tolerant, thanks to their origins in shaded forest floors. Their leaf structure, sometimes with a waxy coating, helps retain moisture. A deep root system allows them to access water even in dry conditions, making them suitable for shaded areas with less water.

Shade ground covers are safe for gardens with children and pets. They are non-toxic and pose no risk during normal gardening activities. Their presence in the garden enhances biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. They mimic natural habitats, supporting ecosystem balance and increasing garden resilience against pests.

Low-light flowering ground covers, such as lamium, add interest with their blooms. Groundcovers for shaded areas are perfect for those seeking a lush, green garden without much sunlight.

Ideal soil and moisture for shade zones

Shade ground covers thrive in low-light conditions, making them perfect for shaded areas. These plants prefer partial to full shade, where direct sunlight is minimal. Factors like nearby trees or buildings can influence the amount of light received. Shade-loving ground covers are generally not wind-sensitive, but if planted in open areas, consider using windbreaks to protect them. The ideal soil for shade ground covers is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality, ensuring nutrients are available. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth. Moisture is crucial; these plants prefer consistently moist soil. However, avoid waterlogged conditions, which can harm roots. Wind and sun exposure can affect soil moisture, so monitor and adjust watering as needed. Shade ground covers thrive in slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Soil pH can be influenced by factors like rainfall and the type of organic matter used. Testing soil pH helps in making necessary adjustments. Ground cover plants for shade are versatile, making them suitable for various garden settings, including under trees and in north-facing areas.

Planting tips for full-shade ground covers

Shade ground covers can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, moisture, and light levels affect planting. When planting shade-loving ground covers, consider the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. The number of plants per metre depends on these factors and is usually listed on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for shade ground covers. Loosen the soil and mix in organic matter to improve drainage and nutrients. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells. This ensures healthy growth and coverage in shaded areas.

Care for Ground Cover Plants for Shade

Shade ground covers are perfect for areas with little sunlight. These low-light ground plants thrive in shaded areas, making them ideal for gardens with trees or north-facing spots.

    • Watering: Shade ground covers need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Water in the morning to allow the soil to absorb moisture.
    • Pruning: Prune these plants in early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to remove dead or overgrown parts. Pruning helps maintain their shape and promotes healthy growth.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to boost growth. Use a slow-release fertiliser and follow the recommended amount on the package. Fertilise once a year for best results.
    • Dividing: Divide shade ground covers every 3-4 years to prevent overcrowding. Do this in early spring or autumn. Gently separate the roots and replant them in a new location.
    • Winter Protection: Most shade-tolerant groundcovers are hardy, but adding a layer of mulch can protect them from harsh winter conditions.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water the plant well before and after moving it to reduce stress.
For those looking to buy shade ground covers, consider their specific needs and the garden's conditions. These plants are excellent for creating lush, green areas in shaded parts of the garden.
